Eh. Depending on the tear, it isn't that bad. It ain't good, and the swelling needs to go down, but I've been there on both knees.
Same.
Shaving the torn piece off is pretty easy to come back from. You’re literally walking on the knee the day after surgery.
The issue with this injury is more later on in life as it can accelerate the arthritis process. Assuming the tear isn’t massive (resulting in him needing to shave off a large chunk of the meniscus), that probably won’t play much of a role during his NBA career considering he’s already 29 years old.
And I would guess that the tear isn’t massive considering his mobility up to this point. I had a large meniscus tear on my left knee and my leg could not straighten past a 90 degree angle because the torn piece was flipped back up into my knee joint. Sabonis hasn’t shown anything close to that so I assume his tear is on the smaller side which helps longevity wise.
For what it’s worth, I ended up having to clip out 80% of my lateral meniscus in my left knee. I was able to play at a high level for the next 4 years (6 days a week and 3 hours per day) but after that, my knee would start swelling up if I played on it too much which my doctor said was a sign of the arthritis process progressing.
In the beginning, my knee would swell up if I played 6 days a week but was fine if I played 4 days a week. A couple years went by, and I had to reduce it back to 2 days a week to avoid swelling. Another couple years go by, and I had to reduce it to 1 day a week. Now I’m at the point where I can’t play in a consistent league anymore because my knee will swell up if I do any high impact sports for more than 30 minutes.
Considering Sabonis is already 29 and his tear is likely on the smaller side, I don’t think this type of injury is something that is going to crater his value.
