Those who dont know 1090 is the main sports station in San Diego.
Im just wondering how its possible to have such clear signal up here in sacramento. Somtimes i listen to 1090 at night when KHTK has some other stuff going on. Maybe i just got a really powerful radio in my car?!

Because AM stations are not "line of sight" the signals can bounce off high clouds (for example) and carry much further distances. Also, the stations sometimes turn up their output at night and get better distance on their signal. There is a radio station in SLC, UT that can be picked up in this area at night sometimes.

Well, I suppose that could be true...

Or it could be pixies.

;)

At night, I can pick up AM news stations from San Diego and San Francisco with ease.

When I was younger (and bored), I would scroll through the AM dial at night to see what out-of-town stations I could pick up. I had an 80's boombox that had a wide radio band, so station separation on the band was easier to come by. In L.A. proper, the furthest station I ever heard was in NE Nebraska (I figured this out via a weather report on the station that named a bunch of cities in the area). You'd think that being up in the southern Sierras would allow you to find a station further than that due to less station competition in the area. But the furthest I ever heard was Casper, WY.

Yeah, I get the Mighty 1090 all the time too!!! Of course, that isn't much of a feat considering i live in San Diego!!! Good radio station though, but I miss good ole 1140...
