so the celtics, jumping from 17th in the league in D-rating in 2007 to 1st in 2008, that didn't have anything to do with garnett's arrival? last year, the magic were 6th and the cavs 11th; this year, they are 1st and 3rd respectively. last year dwight was 9th and lebron wasn't even in the top 20; this year they are 1st and 4th respectivey. i think it's pretty clear that lebron is hugely responsible for their jump in defense this season. and really, the clincher for me is that, while the magic and dwight have the best "D-rating" this season, lebron and his team are pretty damn comparable AND also have the best record in the league. that means they're actually winning with their defense.
like superman said above, "there's no hard and fast rule to determine who the best defender in the league is, and either of those guys would dramatically improve their team defensively. I agree with you that Howard's contributions would affect a team more drastically than LeBron's would, but that doesn't automatically make him the DPOY." i simply disagree with you guys, but hey, if winning this argument means that much to you, then you are absolutely right and i'm sorry for espousing my views; it won't happen again.
