Deal sends shock waves through the locker room

DALLAS - Kings guard Mike Bibby heard the news from Chris Webber himself and couldn't believe it. And a day after Bibby learned the five-time All-Star forward had been traded to the Philadelphia 76ers, it was no more palatable.

"I don't like it," Bibby said of the deal. "I didn't like it when I heard it, and I still don't like it. I was surprised, because I didn't see it coming. I never thought they'd trade Chris. It just surprised me. He called me and told me, and I couldn't believe it. It's still kind of hard to believe."

Bibby said that playing Thursday - a 122-113 loss to the Dallas Mavericks - without Webber was weird. And to Bibby, it didn't matter that the Kings were 51-16 over the past two seasons without Webber. Nor did that matter to Kings coach Rick Adelman.

"We haven't had Chris in the lineup before with injuries and we've done well," Adelman said. "But injuries are one thing - losing a guy to injury and he's still there. This is totally different."

Why did the Kings make that trade?

Adelman said that question needed to be answered by someone else. His primary concern was getting the core Kings - Bibby, Jackson, Cuttino Mobley, Brad Miller and Darius Songaila - to recognize that they will determine the direction of the Kings.

"The younger guys and the new guys are going to follow them," Adelman said he told that group. "So it will be them who determines where this team will go and what it will become."

Jackson said he wished management had given this group a chance to show what it was capable of doing. Stojakovic is the only player remaining from the 1998-99 team. Jackson, who joined the team five years ago as a free agent, now is second in length of service.

"Starting with Jim Jackson, you let Jim Jackson go," Bobby Jackson said. "You let Hedo (Turkoglu) go. You let Keon Clark go. Then Vlade, then Doug, now Webb.

"Each year, you get close to these guys, and it hurts because these guys are like brothers to you. ... We were in a slump, and maybe that's why this happened. But it's all part of the nature of the business."

Stojakovic said he hoped any reported feuding between the two is not cited as a reason for the trade.

"Chris and I had a straight-up relationship, especially from the start of training camp," he said. "We talked to each other then, and I know I talked to Chris more than anyone else on this team. The problem is, we cannot shut up everybody else who wants to make something out of nothing."

Stojakovic was asked if he had said anything to management about not wanting to play with Webber. "How can I say anything to them?" he said rhetorically. "I thought I was getting traded (Monday). ... I hope to talk to Chris (today) in Philadelphia. I was in the movies (Wednesday night) when I found out. I tried to call him, but his phone wasn't taking messages."

It really is the end of an era...

Bobby is probably next to go. No way we're dumping the 3 castoffs we got individually or in a combination of themselves. Bobby is probably the only non-starter that will look attractive to other teams. We'll probably lose a starter too to get rid of these guys.

yeah. i think bobby may be next. he's getting old and he's injury-prone. i don't want him to go. :(

he doesn't have a huge contract, though. and i don't think he'll recieve one at this stage of his career. so maybe there's a chance that we could keep him.

Just to vent, the Maloofs getting money conscious in not resigning JJax was the signal of things changing. The prior two seasons the owners had a take no-prisoners attitude, would spend whatever it took to win a title, and just fell short. Did they realize that they just didn't have luck on their side, so at least they should save a little money? Who knows, but that's what they started doing when they didn't resign JJax, and in a way this trade is one of the final steps in getting the payroll back under control. With BJax as a tradeable asset, the Kings can probably unload KThomas or Skinner (the two longer running contracts, I think).

As for the article, it was something that the "insiders" prattled on and on about, but no one believed them. Maybe "they" know a bit more than we are giving them credit for...

Does this group of "key" core players seem to be missing anyone?

yea it does - most of the actual key players who have been traded away over the years...oh yea, and peja wasnt mentioned either....i guess Adelman hates him just like C-Webb:)

Now that I read it, I didn't notice Peja's name not being there. Wouldn't take it seriously though, just a omission.

I noticed that as well. Maybe he is including Peja in the "Young guys" but that seems weird. Honestly, though, it's just hard to talk to the media. You are emotional, you are talking off the top of your heard, and it's hard to think of everything.

He probably mentioned those names because that was the starting lineup against Dallas. Wait, Jackson is injured. Ok you got me, Rick hates Peja lol.

fat chance man. bobby is leaving this summer or early next season for sure. we got easier pieces to move w/ bobby so we can get some value in return.

i don't know if petrie will move peja but its a possibility.

it's signaling we're seriously moving in a new direction w/ some youth. our aging core is basically gone. vlade, doug, chris ... all of them are over 30, who else is over 30? yup thats right, i dont have to name any names. just accept the fact that we're trying to get better for the future.

Is that a shocker? If he goes its something that has been discussed quite often and since last season.

^^ when shipping bobby was being discussed, some people were under the impression that HE will opt out after this season. but the TEAM has that option, and Geoff said that he will pick up bobby's option, so i thought he'd stay atleast 2 more years (counting this one).

well now, with all the stuff that went on this season, i guess he'll be gone in the offseason.

i'm just still clinging to some hope that he won't be. like i said, he has a small contract and probably won't have a large one anyway so it's not like we'd have to pay top dollar for him.

That's what I'm thinking, too. It's going to be hard to move the new guys by themselves because of their contracts, so we'd need to throw in a player to sweeten the deal. A player with the skills, experience and contract like Bobby's would be coveted around the league.

No, Matt Barnes was on the radio with the Rise Guys this morning. I didn't hear it, turned it on right afterwards, but they said that he is saying all the right things but you can tell he's extremely upset. They also said he feels he has something to prove, and that he will be ready to play come Saturday.
