David Stern Conference Call (transcript added!)

#33
I think Dave hit the best word to describe Stern, smooth. He's not going to let a loaded question get under his skin. He's going to give you nothing and make you feel just a bit smaller for even asking in the first place. Smooth should not be confused with slick as I think he's correct in his assessment of the situation. It needs to be defused and start being productive. This issue doesn't call for declarations or lines in the sand. That's exactly what Stern is saying needs to be tone going forward. And for their part, I hope the Bee takes stock of it's role in being a fuse lighter so far and try to be more of fact provider and provide a lot less of their inflammatory commentary.

And for what it's worth, other than the fact that he's a little goofy looking guy, I don't find what's so annoying about him. It even seems to me that he's a bit of a homer for the Kings (or at least the Maloofs), and I remember pretty vividly when Greg Anthony was bashing the franchise (I think this was around the time of the Artest trade) and he put up a pretty good fight in the name of the Kings, though completely unnecessary. Anyway, my two cents.
Off topic, but in my opinion what is so annoying about him are his "loaded questions" and how obvious they are and he is about asking them. Whether you consider that good journalism or not, it is still pretty darn annoying.

He asks every question in a way intended to maximize the likelihood that the response will be in any way controversial. Whether it's Pete Rose, the Maloofs the other day, here with David Stern, or even with Jenny Boucek last night, his questions indicate that he doesn't care about the subject of the interview, only about creating or exposing controversy.

That's my two cents. ;)

There are two types of interviewers: a) those who go into an interview with a first question and plan to ask succeeding questions based on the first answer, and b) those who go into an interview with a set of questions.

JG is the latter. He isn't listening to the responses; he's only waiting for the other person to take a breath so he (JG) can ask his next question...

I assume they're talking about when I replayed the entire conference call on my show last night, right around 10:15-10:45.

The Jim Gray thing was funny. There's nobody smoother than Stern...
Yeah, the Commish has always been too damn smooth. Jim Gray is a buffoon, and always has been. He has had a FEW bright spots, but mostly he's the little biotch that couldn't, where ever he's been. I'll always remember him for the Pete Rose interview...ever since then, I've had a great deal of dislike towards him. All he does is try to stir the pot, and he just ends up sounding like an azz in the process. Damn annoying.

He actually did both

I totally disagree with you. If you actually read the transcript of the call, you will see that he incorporates some of Sterns comments into the next ?, or one after that. Every good interviewer has questions posed before an interview that will be asked. You can then use their answers to come up with other questions. This was done.

I do agree however, that the question regarding 3 teams in SO Cal was not appropriate for this conference call.
