The hilarious thing is that within about 15 minutes of the time that you posted this, while watching the UCLA/Oregon game, I noted that the UCLA lineup was ALSO #1 (Xavier Booker), #2 (Donovan Dent), #3 (Eric Dailey), #4 (Jamar Brown) and #5 (Brandon Williams).San Antonio's closing lineup is wearing jersey numbers #1 (Victor Wembanyama), #2 (Dylan Harper), #3 (Keldon Johnson), #4 (De'Aaron Fox) and #5 (Stephon Castle). It's giving:

Wild I had both games on for a stretch and didn't notice, I tend to notice things like that. The hilarious thing is that within about 15 minutes of the time that you posted this, while watching the UCLA/Oregon game, I noted that the UCLA lineup was ALSO #1 (Xavier Booker), #2 (Donovan Dent), #3 (Eric Dailey), #4 (Jamar Brown) and #5 (Brandon Williams).
Crazy, kinda.
Looks like they only retired numbers on four occasions. The first was in 1990 (Kareem, Walton). The second in 1996 was coming off their most recent championship which was basically won by O'Bannon dragging the rest of the team up the hill, so I kind of get the enthusiasm. Miller came later (2013), and he remains the only other player to have his number retired who played after the '70s - and, with Don Barksdale (who was involved in breaking the color barrier in the '40s, also retired in 2013) one of only two players with a retired number never to have won a championship at UCLA.Wild I had both games on for a stretch and didn't notice, I tend to notice things like that.
This semi-inspired me to look up the list of UCLA retired numbers ... They actually retired 31 for Ed O'Bannon before later adding Reggie Miller to the number? Are you effing kidding me?
Ok that makes sense, Miller got "allowed" in because he entered into the Basketball HoF.In a way, Miller is an exception to the (apparent) must-have-won-a-championship rule, so that's kind of a testament to how good he was. They broke the rule for him!
Yeah, that's probably pretty similar, though I'd guess that overall he was maybe like a tier of player up from Simon. But, yes, when you look at a list that has guys like Kareem and Walton and Wilkes etc., O'Bannon does pale in comparison. I was a bit surprised to see that his number was retired.I'll admit I have hated O'Bannon ever since his lawsuit lead to the discontinuation of NCAA video games, so it could influence my thought process here beyond the fact he only had a cup of coffee in the Association. Is he held in the same regard as Miles Simon would be by Wildcats fans?
