The Sacramento Kings have confirmed a list of seven coaches they will interview for the head coach vacancy.

Interview requests have been sent to the Los Angeles Lakers and permission received to talk to assistant coaches Brian Shaw and Kurt Rambis. From the Houston Rockets there is assistant coach Tom Thibodeau. Former Miami Heat coach Stan Van Gundy is on the list as well as former King player and current New Mexico State head coach Reggie Theus. Current Kings' assistant coach Scott Brooks and former Kings assistant Elston Turner are also on the list.

It is possible additional candidates will be interviewed once the NBA playoffs conclude. League rules prohibit interviewing any coach whose team is still in the playoffs.

Kings President of Basketball Operations Geoff Petrie will solely conduct the interviews, which will most likely begin later this week in Sacramento.

Sacramento dismissed first-year head coach Eric Musselman after a 33 and 49 season in which the Kings finished last in the Pacific Division and did not reach the post season for the first time in nine years.

Kings basketball president Geoff Petrie said Tuesday that he will interview six candidates for the team's vacant coaching position beginning later this week.
Petrie said he plans to sit down with former Miami coach Stan Van Gundy, former Kings point guard and current New Mexico State coach Reggie Theus and former Kings assistant coach Elston Turner.
The Kings also have asked and received permission to talk with three current assistant coaches: Houston's Tom Thibodeau and the Los Angeles Lakers' Brian Shaw and Kurt Rambis. Petrie said he also has received permission to talk with Indiana assistant Chuck Person but has not scheduled an interview.
The process of finding a new coach has changed from last offseason, when the Kings interviewed just three candidates before hiring Eric Musselman. Whereas co-owners Joe and Gavin Maloof -- and other family members -- were involved in every interview and the location of choice was Las Vegas, Petrie said he will be assessing candidates with basketball vice president Wayne Cooper sometimes present, and most of the interviews will take place in Sacramento. The Maloofs, Petrie said, will be more involved once his list shortens.
"In the end, I'll interview significantly more people than we did last year," Petrie said. "At some point, I'm sure I'll have two or three people who I think need to be brought back or want to talk to again, and certainly Joe and Gavin will be involved (then)."Kings assistant Scott Brooks, who had lunch with Petrie last week but has yet to have a formal interview, also is a candidate.
"I had lunch with (Brooks), and he definitely is a candidate and wants a chance at the job," Petrie said. "I basically told everybody the same thing about how we were going to do it, gave them some information that I wanted from them, and then we go from there."
Of the early candidates, Van Gundy and Rambis are the only ones with NBA head-coaching experience. Van Gundy coached the Heat from 2003 to 2005 before resigning to spend time with his family, and he already has interviewed for Charlotte's head-coaching job.
Rambis, who played briefly with the Kings toward the end of his career, coached the Lakers in 1999 during the lockout-shortened season, compiling a 24-13 record before being eliminated in the Western Conference semifinals. He moved to the Lakers' bench when Phil Jackson was hired in his first term in Los Angeles. Rambis also is expected to interview with Seattle.
Theus received a contract extension last week that would make him the highest-paid coach in the Western Athletic Conference (reportedly $466,000 per season with bonus opportunities). While there is a buyout clause in the contract, it is unclear if it pertains to the NBA.
Thibodeau had his coaching start in the NBA under the late Bill Musselman, Eric's father, as an assistant in Minnesota in 1989.
Turner has remained in the area since he was released as part of the coaching staff under former Kings coach Rick Adelman. He played in the league for eight years, and he was a Kings assistant for six seasons after spending four years in the Portland organization.
Speaking from Las Vegas, Gavin Maloof said he's confident Petrie will find the right man.
"There's a lot of talent, a lot of good coaches," Gavin Maloof said. "We shouldn't have a problem finding a good quality person."

Grant already mentioned the assistant coach of Phoenix, who is still in the playoffs. Mitchell has already been talked to by the Bobcats.

No! His contract expires on July 30 and the other day there was article on the web saying that Colangelo will not let other teams speak to him at this stage.
