March Madness heroes Mario Chalmers and Darrell Arthur were thrown out of the NBA's rookie transition program on Wednesday morning after being caught in their hotel room with marijuana, according to several sources.


"They were sent home for violating program rules," NBA spokesman Brian McIntyre said.


Sources said Chalmers and Arthur, who starred on the Kansas Jayhawks' 2008 NCAA championship team, were also fined $20,000 apiece and will start the regular season on the suspended list. But McIntyre would not confirm that.

the first article said beasley may have been in the room but was not suspected as being part of it.

Good lord. It should read they were sent home for being complete and utter morons. I really can't fathom being that stupid. :rolleyes:
 
Seriously?? You go to a camp where they are there to help you transition to the life of an NBA player. How to deal with the media, and the new pressures you will experience both on the court, from fans around you, when you are just being yourself in public, or in the media possibly, and you show up with weed??

If I was their coach those guys would do nothing but run and do drills for the entire camp and pre-season. They would go through the regular practices with the team, and stay afterwards until I told them they could leave doing drills, laps, pushups, cleaning the locker room, whatever needed to be done.

Amazing. And here I was going to joke that the only thing that could make it more ironic was if they had pot AND groupies.

I don't really see what good it does to throw them out of the program. Isn't the whole idea of the program to prevent them from acting this stupid. Seems like they should still be in the program but in lockdown mode and then receive follow up transition counseling during their rookie season.

I would be willing to bet that there are other players who view the transition program as a waste of their time and would gladly fork over a fraction of their first check not to be there.
 
I could see this kind of arrogance from a lottery pick. But, for a couple of 2nd rounders who should be focusing on just making the roster, this is about as idiotic as it gets. Darrel Arthur should be thanking his luck that he's in the NBA considering how far he had fallen on draft night.
 
How can they be suspended? By their rightful teams or by the league?? I thought you only get suspended for a repeated offense: i.e. Brad miller.

Here's my probably way too harsh take on the whole thing...

There are hundreds/thousands of young men who would give everything they own to even get a shot at the NBA. Chalmers and Arthur got their chance to live the dream and what do they do? They flaunt one of the most basic freaking rules - knowing full well what might happen.

There should be beyond zero tolerance for these bozos. If they can't manage to do without the freaking weed and partying at this point, they shouldn't even be in the league.

Kick them out and let someone else have their slots.
 
Wow there are people who give everything they have to strive to even get a chance to be in the NBA, they are gifted athletically and worked hard to get to this point.

Then what do they do? they throw it all away like a bunch of little kids.

It's in their rookie contracts. If they are late to a meeting at the rooking transition they get fined. If they miss it they get a 5 game suspension.

So the details are coming out now. The smoke alarm went off at 2am in the morning. They didnt let the manager in so he got security and call the police. They entered the room and there were 2 women there and someone was locked in the bathroom flushing the toilet over and over. The room smelled like weed.

Pissing off the comish is not the way to start a career.

Security at the resort near New York where the event took place found Arthur and Chalmers in a room with two women, and the scent of marijuana was detected. No drugs or drug paraphernalia were found, but having guests in the room violated NBA policy, and the two rookies were sent home.
Arthur and Chalmers apologized but denied using marijuana. Next year they'll have to again attend the symposium, which addresses the challenges of making the transition to pro ball.
Arthur and Chalmers helped Kansas win the NCAA championship and were selected in the June draft. Arthur is with the Memphis Grizzlies and Chalmers with the Miami Heat.
