I think we'll wind up getting a pick in 2019 but I'm glad there is no incentive to tank.
Also just because the top gets better it doesn't mean the next tier is impossible to break into. I don't expect playoffs but I do expect a 10 win improvement. And then comes the real test. If you look at how bad a team like the Blazers has bungled things thinking they could move up a peg or two after a surprisingly strong playoff run in 2016.
Agree completely. Even I expect a 10 win improvement. Realistically though, 10 wins is pretty huge, since it will require us to win most of the games we are expected to win, and compared to last year, many more that were borderline, or we were expected to lose. Let's see if the team is up to it.
As for Dave's point about waiting in the West, that's pointless. Sure, the top teams will decline in a few years, but we are not competing with them. We can at best hope that the team will stay in the hunt for the 8th spot over a good part of the season, and that itself will be a huge improvement. That part is never going to be easier. While some teams fall, others will step in. This year itself, Mavs have added Doncic and Jordan, Lakers have added Bron, and change, and Suns have added Ayton, Bridges, and Ariza. All these teams were below us, and will be expecting big improvements this year. Lakers improvement is a given, and Mavs too may see improvement, given that they are adding a proven, experienced center, and their rook comes with solid, professional experience. Suns might need to wait like us, since their major additions are rookies, though Booker's return will help them too. As against that, Clippers are the only team who have lost a major piece (not counting Ariza's loss for Houston, since for us, that's a different tier anyway. Similarly, waiting on the DMC story to see how Pelicans are impacted, but with Jrue and Davis, they'll be much better than us in the near future, even without Boogie).
The reason I think we need to wait is because we need to find some playing time for our vets in the hope of trading them for something, and we need to find time for the kids to help them develop, and see what we have. Adding more pieces negatively impacts both these aims.
