Big Brown

That's the problem with a horse that is so highly touted. I'm willing to be there aren't going to be more than 5 or 6 entrants in the Belmont.

Having said that, he looked like he was out for a stroll in the park today. He didn't hit high gear even once and he wasn't even really winded at the end.

While I'm not sure about the real quality of the field to begin with, Big Brown certainly made it clear he was the best horse on the track.

I'm inclined to disagree. I listen to Kornheiser's radio show every day, and he interviewed two guys this past week that know about horse racing, including Andy Beyer, who is apparently considered to be THE authority on horse racing. Both of them are of the opinion that the owners of the better horses held them out of the Preakness to preserve them for the Belmont, so Big Brown could be in for a fight to get that Triple Crown.

And, even though Big Brown winning increases my interest in the Triple Crown about a hundredfold, this post on the wrestling forum I post at still made me laugh:

I bet Big Brown is pretty pumped that he can win the Triple Crown. Oh wait, he doesn't give a ****, because he's a ****ing horse.

I would love to see more competition in the Belmont. I think Big Brown is good enough to hold them off for the 1.5 miles, though.

And Desensitized is wrong. Horses may not understand the concept of a Triple Crown but the good ones do understand racing and competition and wanting to win.

Rubbish!

Everybody knows that the most intelligent creatures on Earth are white mice. Then dolphins, and then mankind...

That quote made my night.

i was watching Real Sports on HBO, and they showed what happens to the horses that don't make the cut. sad stuff. disturbing actually. it left me with disgust for the sport.

From the way his jockey was describing it, Big Brown wasn't feeling it today, to overstate the obvious....I turned it off before any more insightful analysis so there may have been more to what went down.

It looked as though he was bumped pretty hard coming out of the gate, stumbled and righted himself but just never looked right. He wasn't limping or lame or anything that I could see, but it did look as though he just never had a clear path after the initial contact and his jockey very wisely pulled up rather than risk injury or worse in a race he was clearly not going to win.
