The Kings signed first-round draft pick Spencer Hawes and free-agent rookie Mustafa Shakur to contracts, the team announced Thursday afternoon.

Terms of the contracts were not disclosed. However, in accordance with the league's collective bargaining agreement, Hawes will earn between $1,352,400 to $2,028,600 the 10th overall pick.

The former University of Washington center will see his first action as a member of the Kings at the NBA Las Vegas Summer League next week.

Shakur is also a rookie out of Arizona, where he played point guard and earned Pac-10 Conference honorable mention. The 6-foot-3 Shakur averaged 10.1 points per game and 5.1 assists in 131 games for the Wildcats.

Shakur will also play in the summer league for Sacramento.

Probably only a partially guaranteed deal, just like we signed Price and Williams to last summer. But, really, do we think Price and Shakur both get a shot? Is Price even in the picture now?

To me this sounds like the deal we offered to Price a couple of years ago and we all know he stayed on the roster.

He spent the first half of the year in the late first rounds on mock drafts, then dramatically fell. Streaky shooting, questionable shot selection and hoop IQ, good size and passing.

Very possible. Or even with Price it don't hurt to have a 3rd pg especially with Bibby out in a few years. This may mean Douby goes to primarily the 2 guard spot. Or its just partial until the end of camp.

I'm slightly confident in Shakur's ability to help the team. His college stats were unexciting, however, almost all of them improved every year, so his FG%, A/T ratio, etc. don't bother me as much as they might. He may not be all that good, but he's young, cheap, and maybe he'll get better.

Shakur has about as much chance of making the final Kings roster as Pooh Jeter who is also back in Kings summer camp. Not saying he can't (or even Jeter) but don't bet on it. UofA was extremely disappointed in his overall play down there coming so highly recruited out of Philly high school. If Kings fans try to get their hopes up with him they are swimming against an ocean tide of mediocrity. He wasn't drafted for a reason and that reason was his talent is suspect at best - especially at the NBA level.

Yeah, I know that he was very hyped at the high school level, and has been considered a huge disappointment. He's looking to be the next Jason Hart at best, and more likely to wind up playing overseas. But for $10,000, we really have nothing to lose.

6.3 rebounds for a center is obviously not excusable, but maybe the injuries did contribute to Hawes exertion of energy on the boards and defense in some sort of way. I'm not trying to make excuses or anything, but it could very well be a possibility. If that actually did contribute, then I am impressed that Hawes is not looking for excuses, but rather trying to improve.
All speculation though.

The Kings signed two rookies Thursday, including first-round draft pick Spencer Hawes, a center from Washington.

Free agent Mustafa Shakur also signed. Hawes was chosen 10th overall in last week's draft. The 7-foot Hawes, who is 19, led Washington with 14.9 points per game and shot 53 percent from the floor, all while dealing with an injured knee and ankle as well as a midseason illness in his only college season.
