Brad Miller was regarded as the player who "does the most with least" in the annual NBA.com general manager survey. That's a nice way of saying the Kings center is about as athletic as assistant coach Pete Carril.
"I can't jump," Miller said. "But I've worked as hard as I can."
Arco Arena earned top votes for having the toughest home-court advantage, and Peja Stojakovic was rated second behind Ray Allen of Seattle as the game's best pure shooter.
Just out of the budget
Miller makes good money, yes, but he said he isn't about to shell out $50,000 to rent the Hardwood Suite at the Palms in Las Vegas, which includes a basketball court, saying, "That's a little out of my budget."
Easy does it
When Kings strength and conditioning coach Daniel Shapiro leaned on Stojakovic after practice to stretch the 6-foot-10 forward's legs, Stojakovic let out a yelp.
"For the record," Shapiro said amid laughter, "I didn't step on his foot."
Around the rim
Kings coach Rick Adelman on his frame of mind, "It's always exciting to start a season, but I do have some apprehension because I don't know when we're going to put it together.''
Key dates
Tuesday: At New Orleans/Oklahoma City - First test for starters to log heavy minutes and to see what sort of punch bench offers.
Wednesday: At Houston - Now it appears Tracy McGrady will play for the Rockets, and he's had some great moments against the Kings (and everyone, really).
Sunday: At Phoenix - Defending Pacific Division champion Suns don't have three starters from last season -Quentin Richardson is in New York, Joe Johnson is in Atlanta and Amare Stoudemire is in limbo -but they're still fast and fun.
Nov. 8: Vs. Detroit - Home opener offers no homecoming pushover, with a 15-point Kings win last spring against the then-defending champs ancient history now. Nov. 9: At Denver - Some prognosticators have the Nuggets headed to the Western Conference finals, and no one disputes their talent.
