Somehow, I don't see the player's union going along with Selig's proposal but I like it. If they're going to ban the substances, then they need to be serious about it. Either remove all the little slaps on the wrists OR make it something the players will think VERY seriously about doing.

Now THAT is tough!

I definatly think if that goes through, the game would clean up just a bit...But then you can argue the players would just find another substance that isn't banned, and keeping jumping to a new one each time their old stuff is banned.

I like it though.

I like the policy as it establishes a little more credibility. I find it harder to watch baseball right now because I think everyone is on the juice. This morning I forgot what player they interviewed but he said he was against. If they aren't doing it why would anyone be against it?

I don't agree with congress being involved either... I like one of baseballs replies. They find this such an issue but a drunk driver can be on DUI-7 with seeing minimal days in jail. That is more of a public safety issue then roids.

I think the oratory about drunk drivers is a smoke screen. One has nothing to do with the other. It is wrong to drink and then get behind the wheel of a car. It is wrong to be part of MLB and take steroids. If the players really want to send a message that they're not taking the steroids, then they need to get behind the tough policy and not try and derail the whole thing.

Having said that, I too think Congress has better things to do than worry about steroid use in baseball.

It doesn't matter. All the good plaers who use do so with substances that won't be caught. That's why only no-name guys and minor leaguers will be caught here.

With penalties like that, I would be willing to bet that "designer" steroid use would drop significantly, if only because the slightest chance at being detected by testing is the slightest chance at getting a 50-game suspension.

Rincon busted today. A mid reliever that is anything but cut... His numbers almost tripled the last year from his career averages. Of course he is denying it.

I don't think they can be taken seriously until they deal with past offenders and the rediculous numbers they put up. If Roger Maris has an asterick by his name because his homers came in a 162 game schedule vs the Babe's 154 game schedule then there are a lot of current athletes whose records should be noted as tainted the same way.
