Artest: #3 Dirtiest player in NBA?

#3
I haven't seen him do anything dirty in a while, definitely nothing since he came to the Kings. #3 is kind of high, but then you think about how few "enforcers" and tough-guys there are in the NBA these days. They've really cracked down on that type of thing and since the game has slowed down, there's no place for those guys with limited skills to go out and get rough with a star player. He's got to contribute because there are less possessions and if you throw a few away by playing 4 on 5 on offense and then making dumb fouls, it can turn the game.

Personally, I don't think he's dirty but if that's his rep and he can manage it and use it to our advantage then I say "great"...never thought I's see someone on the Kings with that rep. I tend to think Kobe ought to be right up there as well given the extreme adeptness he possesses at using them to clear out and intimidate. When he connects someone can really get hurt. But, the most egregious foul is the forcefull chop at the ball than can result in a turnover or broken bones and the resulting impact on a team's success for the year...think Brad Miller, Peja and Bobby Jackson.

I get kind of a perverse pleasure out of this. We have someone on the "dirtiest player in the NBA" list?

I have to agree with Rowdyone. GREAT!!!

Actually, it would be 23 people (or 22 if you're rounding up the percentages).

But the point of the thread is that Artest is considered a "dirty" player by other players in the league, even dirtier than Shaq, KG, Kobe, Kmart, Najera, Manu, etc... Despite all his problems, I'm not sure if he deserves to be called "dirty"...

You are right Jose, its was a bad estimation on my part. I don't consider only 23 three players out of an entire league that claim someone is "dirty" to have much value. 91% of the league didn't see this "dirtyness". I'd have to agree with them.

Before I could respond in this thread, I had to take a step back down memory lane to see how I felt about Ron prior to his becoming a King. For me, since he is a King now, the issue got a bit clouded.:p

I love Ron's defensive intensity. He makes a lot of offensive players work extremely hard to get their points, and even then, they usually come up way short of their average.

There are several players that pop right out of my head when I think of dirty players. Ron Artest is not one of them. In fact, as I look back at his play, I cannot remember a time when I said to myself (about Ron), "Geez...he is a dirty player.".......not once...ever.

That's because he's so good at being dirty and getting away with it :)

There are a lot of players who have played dirty and gotten away with it. Malone comes to mind right away, as do others. I have seen a lot of plays that I would consider dirty, but that didn't even have a foul called.

BTW, I have been watching basketball for about 40 years. I have seen a dirty player or 2 in my time. ;)

I was thinking like you 6th. Did I think he was a dirty player before he became a King? Nope, can't remember ever thinking that. What I remember is really enjoying someone who plays with such incredible intensity. I thought he was fun to watch on defense. Yeah, Malone and Stockton both got away with a lot of ****.;) I'd get SO mad sometimes when we played the Jazz with them.

Anyway, I think its wrong to say Ron is playing dirty. He's not playing, he's dead serious.;)
