Arco old, inadequate - merged

Sacramento and its Arco Arena were left off the list because the NCAA deemed it to be inadequate.

FOX 40's Jim Crandell reported this earlier this evening.

Events passing by ARCO because of age

http://www.kevinjohnsonformayor.com/kjfm/?p=140

The NCAA playoffs has spurned ARCO arena because of it's age for the first time. That is at least $3-4 million the Sacramento area won't get because the arena is too old. Other events (concerts, etc.) have also bypassed us over the years, but this one is a shot across our bow. The arena isn't even good enough for college ball......

Sacramento REALLY needs to hurry up and build a new arena. When the NCAA deems a professional teams arena to be unfit for college basketball you know theres a big problem. I would HATE to see the Kings pack up and move to another city. Build a damn arena already!

we WILL lose the Kings if we don't figure something out SOON. everyone knows we need a new arena, i wish there was some way just to 'git er done!'

I'm glad that KJ is stepping up finally, as a former NBA All-Star, who realizes the importance of this dilemma being resolved and a new arena as being a key to Sacramento's economy. Also glad to hear that the Railyards and Natomas are back in play...I like the Cal Expo plan, but still think it's very pricey to pull off...you might as well put that money into a downtown arena, and PLANNING will be key to this in a swift manner as well. They need to get this done privately and moved on without it going to any sort of election because it will fail every time, the NIMBY'S always come out for elections.

And that's in public view. I haven't seen behind the scenes, but I hear its really awful back there. But decrepitness is only part of the problem. Its just functionally obsolete leading to economic obsolescene. For example, there's only one small kitchen for the whole arena and the "marshalling area" for event set-up is way to small and there are not enough loading docks. There are not two levels of exits to the outside and the concourses are ridiculously small. I can't even imagine the stampede carnage in there, if a fire (only wooden bleachers in the NBA folks) or other disaster broke out. I walked out of a 22,000+ ticket sell-out at the arena in Chicago and was out right away with no jostling at all. Plenty of room to manuever, not to mention all the stores and restaurants there along the concourse.

The ice maker takes 3 days to create ice and is always breaking down. Modern arenas can make ice in hours, so they can have an event during the day, get everything out, make ice, and get everything in for the ice event that night. That's why we couldn't have a hockey team even if one were available and the Maloofs wanted to buy it.

I hear the vistors' locker room is appalling, the hands-down worst in the NBA. (Not that I care if the Lakers are uncomfortable. ;))

The list is long, if you read the city consultants' reports.

Your pictures tell some of the story, but Arco is just plain shabby looking. There are college basketball arenas that are nicer by far. Kansas City has a new arena completely with public money. I'm so jealous. *sigh*
