[font=arial,sans-serif]Introducing, the new, new, new, really, seriously new Bonzi
Storytime...

Dec. 2003 I flew Portland to Memphis for what amounts to Bonzi Wells' unveiling ceremony in a Grizzlies uniform. I walked into the Pyramid in Memphis, and found a former college assistant I'd covered years ago standing in the hallway. He was then an assistant with the Grizzlies and he told me, in no uncertain terms, that he believed Bonzi Wells would finally turn things around.

"(Coach) Hubie won't go for his s--," the assistant said. "When we traded for him, we agreed that either Bonzi or our franchise was going to change because of this deal. And the point was made that it was going to have to be Bonzi, because we're not changing who we are."

Further down the hall, there was a throng of Memphis media waiting to meet Bonzi for the first time. Television reporters, radio people, etc. All lined up, neat and proper, outside the Grizzlies locker room.

"Bonzi will change here," one of the print reporters told me, "Jerry West won't put up with him if he doesn't. Plus, Portland was the wrong environment for him. Too much media scrutiny."

I wandered further down the hall, where there was a back door to the arena and who should I find standing there?

Bonzi himself.

Later, in the locker room, he was asked the same questions that he'll be asked by Sacramento's media this week, and by Portland's media when he first arrived. Because it's always just been a matter of time before Bonzi goes Bonzai.

"What happened at your last stop?"

"Can you be a good teammate?"

"Can you change?"

Bonzi said all the right things. The interview ended.

I remember a particular television reporter, female, black hair, who turned to me after interviewing him for the first time and said, "He's not as awful as people in Portland make him out to be. He's actually charming."

"Hey, give him a chance," I said.

Good luck, Sacramento.

--^wonder what he means by that?
Thats at least 2 hate pieces he wrote about Bonzi... think he has a grudge?

Remember all the luggage C-Webb was carrying around ???

It is what it is ....

Wells has a chance to put his career BACK ON TRACK ... just like Chris did.

Eh... this guy has an obvious personal grudge against Bonzi for whatever reason a la Voison. It only took me a few minutes to find a second article he wrote complaining about Wells.

There is no way to predict how Bonzi will be here. We do have a history of making problem children play well, but Bonzi is undeniably a head case. We can give him everything he wants in terms of playing, and hopefully he can enjoy being a player here. I think one concern is that with Webber, Christie, even JWill those guys all came into a great situation, where they were part of the Kings renaissance, hell, the renaissance of basketball. They got to do something great together and had a very unique chemistry, which could easily overcome all personal issues. It's clear that at least Williams never changed, he just liked how things were going in Sac. We don't have that unique situation anymore. We're not the young guns, we're the old dogs trying to keep up. So maybe Bonzi will hate it here, and maybe he'll play along and look happy for oh, 12-18 months. But maybe he can mature and play well. But I really can't worry, exactly because the Kings are in such an up in the air, trying to keep up state. They aren't commiting to anyone for the long term until they can recreate a team identity. So if things don't work out right, expect Bonzi to be gone soon. And if they do work out right, Bonzi can turn things around and do something right in his career.

I thought the reason he was upset in memphis was his playing time. So i think as long as hes getting minutes he'll be fine. And besides he only signed for a year, so if both sides aren't happy they can go there seperate ways.

I, personally want to look upon Bonzi Wells with fresh eyes and give him the opportunity to show me who he is with what he does while he's a King. That's all I really care about..not what he did in Memphis, but what he's going to do with us. Welcome Bonzi..I look forward to watching you play.

The interesting thing is that Bonzi is in the final year of his contract.
And, for a strange reason, such players usually make a good season, on and off the court ;)

That writer(Canzano) is and always will be a hack. His job is to pick on people and trash their image(with Bonzi it's pretty easy to do) and he had a field day with Tarkanian when he wrote at the Fresno Bee.
