All Three Press Conferences Linked Here (Maloof, KJ, Stern)

The Hammer

All-Star
The bonanza of press conferences can all be found on the NBA site following this link:

That will take you right to Stern's half hour one, about 20 minutes of which is the media grilling him about the Kings.

Scroll down to find KJ's extended presser, and also the Maloofs "presentation", just below. I'd recommend starting with the Maloofs, as KJ and Stern both reference things that happened in that one. (Notably, Stern's repeated sly insults at bringing in the "economist".)

I am a little more pessimistic about the Commissioner's demeanor. He certainly sounds somber and overall disappointed that the deal didn't go through, for all parties. I don't see him as some type of crusader who is going to launch a personal campaign against the Maloofs on our behalf.

I hate to say it but I am dejected, and this is all playing into the Maloofs end-game for this team being in Anaheim in 3-4 years time. The fanbase is will become increasingly alienated, attendance will droop down to Charlotte-Shinn era numbers (only difference is Charlotte was still a playoff team, not a terrible team as this), and I doubt the other owners will care enough about the situation to risk their leverage in turning down the Maloofs request.

Wish I was wrong

What he's doing first and foremost is not making any enemies. We, too, want him to remain "friends" with the Maloofs. What WAS clear was that he was sympathetic to our cause. We know his inner feelings that the Kings should be in Sac. That's all that matters. These public events have different purposes than making a crusade per se. Him speaking like this takes power away from the Maloofs should they wish to challenge him. I know it's not the most assuring thing to see this kind of display, but you have to look for the hidden signs of his allegiance. And, there were plenty. You might want to watch again and see how many times he insults the Maloofs "economist" (not the Maloofs themselves, mind you), and also, Brick's perception of his little line "some of my best friends are anti-trust attorneys" I think is very telling. EVERY SINGLE WORD this man utters is painstakingly thought out before it exits his mouth. He LIVES in the world of legal protection, potential law suits, possible anti-trust suits, etc. He has somewhat of a relaxed and friendly demeanor, but rest assured the man carries a big stick.

I'd say he's on the side of keeping the Kings in Sac, undoubtedly. His effervescent praise of the region and the market, both historical, and about he past year's efforts, is the most solid indication of this. There is simply no way that he takes a team away from a place that he has said has done everything, and more, that has been asked of them to keep its team. TOTALLY different situation that Seattle.

Thanks for finding these, Hammer. I'm sticking them to the top of the forum for ease of location.
