Al Harrington still expected to be a Pacer...

Boston Herald - Most people around the NBA still expect Al Harrington to end up in Indiana as soon as his agent, Arn Tellem, is allowed
to test the market.

Harrington could get less money than he was once expecting though.

“Normally, I don’t think Al Harrington is a guy who should be getting more than the mid-level,” said the anonymous general manager. “How do you explain what a guy like Nene ($60 million over five years from Denver) is getting? There’s no rhyme or reason to it. Some guys luck out, and some guys don’t.”

I also still ultimately think he ends up in Indy.

Funny, cause a radio station in SoCal had a ATL Reporter and he said the Hawks want Chris Mihm so that means Al is gonna be a Laker probably.

Since the Hawks signed Lorenzen Wright, I would say that's dead now. The Hawks have Zaza Pachulia, who is said to be the starting center up to now, as he was last year and had a solid year. Then you got Wright backing him up, who is a capable starter.

Mihm is no PF, and the Hawks already got Shelden Williams, Jones, Marvin Williams and Josh Smith to get time at PF. I'd say Josh Smith or Marvin will play at PF. One of the latter two will start at SF.

I'd say they do want Zaza still. Zaza had a nice year for them last year and they got him on a good contract. He's younger as well.

That's Hacksaw. Pay no mind to him.

Eric "emplay" Pincus is also of the mind that Harrington is a possibility. That's the double kiss of death.

Sekou has hinted at his blog that he knows something but can't reveal til Tuesday for some reason.

Whos emplay? and what is hinted on Sekou Smiths blog? it would be interesting maybe it's the official announcement of were he lands and since today SoCal has been all over Al Harrington i wouldn't be surprised if he announces a trade in his blog on Tuesday.

What I read from Sekou was that he didn't know and to expect the unexpected. He used to write for the Pacers though so I would think he would be more privy to info. For what it's worth, Al sold his house here and bought one in Indy before the trade was even announced. He said that in his interview.

Emplay is Eric Pincus. He's a mod at LG and a writer for hoopsworld. He's got a bad rep as a guy who has yet to come thru on a rumor. Some radio guy named Matt "Money" Smith ripped him up yesterday out of the blue on the Fat Joe McDonnell show (you peeps in Sud Cali prolly know all these names).

Emplay's biggest gaffe was being so fervent about the Jonathan Bender rumors that were swirling (as in toilet) around a couple years ago. He went onto the Dave Smith show with that and hasn't been back since.

Imo, he and Arn Tellem will try to force their way to the city willing to pay him the most. Standard issue... On another board, an Indy fan (Indy Dave) who's widely considered a poster of substance, says he's got ties to Indy because his momz is comfortable in Indianapolis. Also worth mentioning is that he's one of those childhood Lakers fans who has a place in LA and Tellem is very friendly to LA and vice versa. I dunno -- there are arguments for a trade to go either way. Atlanta appears to be in a firesale mood as far as he's concerned. Looks like they want cheap players and/or 1st rounder(s) & perhaps expiring Ks.

My own disclaimer (being biased towards LA) is that I believe Mitch Kupchak trades when I see them. I'll consider Harrington a Pacer until some strong evidence to the contrary pops up.

Still think he's coming to Indy. The occasional Pacer 'sources' still seem to think so.

quote from emplay

On LA Radio - David Vassegh (more connected than the usually Hacks) - says that the LA/ATL deal "not gonna happen" - from a source he has very close to the situation - Indy and Atl are very close to finalizing a deal.

Were this one of the other guys - I'd dismiss it as just ignorance - but Vassegh is one of the few guys on LA radio I actually trust (know him personally).

back on the market...

INDIANAPOLIS -- Al Harrington's new agent said he is willing to listen to offers from all teams, making what looked like a done deal for the Indiana Pacers to acquire the free agent now seem uncertain.

The Atlanta forward, who had played six years for the Pacers, dumped agent Andy Miller and chose Arn Tellem of Wasserman Media Group. Tellem, a heavy hitter who also represents Houston's Tracy McGrady and Memphis' Pau Gasol, will officially become Harrington's agent Monday.

"We will explore the entire range of options available to Al," Tellem said. "We consider every team in the mix until there is a deal."

Harrington is considered the top remaining free agent on the market. He averaged 18.6 points and 6.9 rebounds a game for the Hawks last season.

The Pacers have made numerous offseason moves and have said they would like Harrington to play a key role in their change to a sleeker, faster-paced style.

But Golden State and Denver have reportedly expressed renewed interest in recent weeks.

Tellem is looking forward to representing the versatile 26-year-old.

"Al is going to be an extremely valuable addition wherever he lands," Tellem said. "He has already cemented himself as one of the NBA's up-and-coming young stars."

Tellem said Harrington is much like Utah's Andrei Kirilenko -- someone who can play multiple positions and is effective on both ends of the court.

Harrington played two seasons with the Hawks after six years with the Pacers and has family members who never left Indianapolis.

The Pacers have worked with Tellem before, as he's the agent who worked out Jermaine O'Neal's seven-year, $126 million deal in 2003. He also was Reggie Miller's agent.

Speed is not Tellem's concern, though he'd like to give his client enough time to get comfortable in his new surroundings.

"The quality of the deal is the most important element," he said. "We will review and exhaust all meaningful options until a fair deal is reached. A lot hinges on Atlanta, but the period ranges from very soon to a couple of weeks or more."

Would he be a good fit on the Kings? I have not followed him much.

No. Harrington's a talented player but doesn't bring what we need. He's a tweener foward, more of an SF than PF. Not an interior defensive presence, not known for his defense, and from what I've seen is average on defense, I guess.

Depends.

They could play him at PF and JO at center, which would also allow the talented Danny Granger to start at SF. Or, play Al at SF, JO at PF, and Foster or whoever would start at center. But, that would put Granger to the bench, most likely for the next 3-4 seasons. I figure they want Granger to start, who I think is ready to, and would like to see that.

Overall I'd think the former happens.

It's somewhat ironic how Indiana wants him back. Admittedly, when they first traded Harrington they needed a shooter in Stephen Jackson--but they weren't very reluctant to lose Harrington in the first place. After all, when Indy traded Harrington in the summer of '04, Harrington was coming off the bench as a sixth man, averaging 13 points per game in 30 minutes. Part of the onus in their decision was probably the fact that they thought that Harrington was somewhat redundant to Jermaine O'Neal--a lesser version, of course, and without the defensive impact--but in terms of offensive game, both have that solid inside-outside game with mid-range J and complementary post game. That's why they were willing to lose him, not to mention the fact that Al had been putting double digit scoring numbers ever since 2001 and they probably feared that he would request a bigger role--offseting the number of touches for Jermaine.

Admittedly, Harrington didn't have any problems coexisting with Jermaine back then, but now that he's established himself as a high-scoring combo forward, I think that he'd want his share of touches alongside Jermaine. And I'm seriously under the belief that they might not coexist well--after all, why would you want a player back you traded? To establish himself somewhere else? Not exactly the reason I was looking for. Harrington can be a SF at times, but he's sort of an in-between guy who should rotate between both forward positions, he's not really a pure SF in game and stature--and that could be a problem for Jermaine's natural "PF" position. I simply don't think that Indiana wanting him back is the right decision--very redundant games, a bigger ego to feed, getting a player they traded back, etc. I mean, at least Peja complimented Jermaine with his shooting.

He wanted out.

Also, he and JO are best friends. They will get along fine.

Indeed, Soup. Al wanted to get a starting role and establish himself more, he's done that. He'll come in with that next to JO, if Al goes to Indiana.
