About Carl Landry (split from trade thread)

Just wanted to drop by and say that you're getting a HELL of a player in Carl Landry. As a Rockets fan I feel like we got over on the Knicks by taking the contract of Jeffries for a pick swap, first rounder, and Jordan Hill, but you guys got the better of a straight up Landry for Martin swap. Martin is overpaid and will be a bad value at his salary before his contract runs out, if he isn't already. Plus, he is never healthy.

Landry is probably the most underpaid player in the league not on a rookie contract. He had some knee injuries before but looks to be completely healthy now and he's tough as nails. He got his teeth knocked out in the playoffs and came back to make the game winning block, got shot in the leg and came back a couple weeks later, and embedded his teeth in Dirk Nowitzski's forearm only put him down for a couple of days.

Nobody in the league can guard him 1 v 1 in the post and he basically demands a doubleteam. He even shreds the Lakers frontline. This is because he's far too quick for a big PF to guard, but overpowers the faster, weaker PFs. He's not good at passing out of a doubleteam yet but I have confidence he will be. He's a very hard worker and has gotten a lot better every year. You can tell he's focused because of how much he's improved his mid-range and free throw shooting. His weaknesses are defense and rebounding when matched against a big PF, but his offensive game is good enough that he very rarely gets outplayed on the whole, even paired against superstars.

It says a lot that on our team, which has Yao Ming and some other solid players, Landry is easily the most liked by fans. Everyone else has a fair share of detractors but Landry is universally loved. I think we mainly dealt him because of his agent. Our GM played hardball with him as a rookie and only signed him to a 1 year deal, and then when he played better than expected our GM played hardball with him again as a RFA and had some pretty rough negotiations with the agent. Now he's on a dirt cheap contract for the level of play he brings, but would probably try to screw us when this contract is up. So, it was better to send him to a team that didn't have a bad history and could resign him at a more reasonable price.

I had hopes to get a more significant front court upgrade for Kevin, but Landry could be a great offensive complement to Tyreke. If only he could rebound. That's the part that makes it hard to think of him as a real longterm central-core player for us. He's more of a useful weapon that trades Kevin perimeter efficiency for inside efficiency, but we still have to have eyes out for a more complete inside option in addition to that defensive big man.

Landry will be our designated #2 option on offense, and I believe he's very well capable of inheriting the role as our low post scorer, given the returns he's shown at Houston. And he's tough, too--remember the Nowitzki/teeth incident? After a half a season of seeing Hawes languish in the perimeter and Thompson ineffectively playing in the interior, it's refreshing to have a guy who doesn't sass his way into scoring--he scores, does it efficiently, and will impose himself.

That being said, I've always thought that Landry was always overrated in things other than scoring. He's not much of a rebounder, he actually was one of the worse defenders at Houston, and considering that we don't play defense to begin with he doesn't help matters at all. Moreover, what's up with our inclination with undersized scoring-minded bigs? Landry doesn't do the prototypical big man intimidation stuff well, and he's 6'8" tops. In fact, I'm really skeptical about what I think might be his overall impact--he's talented enough to be a starter, but more than that? I'd like to see more rebounding and defense from him, but I think there's a cap on how much he can do...for that, I think his ceiling is Shareef Abdur-Rahim territory.

He's going to give you 20+ ppg and 7-8 boards if given 35mpg. Not sure where exactly he ranks in fourth quarter scoring at this exact moment, but it's definitely top 5 only being beat out by players like Kobe and Lebron. He's good enough to be the best offensive player on a team with a winning record. With Tyreke drawing more attention than any Rockets player, Landry will do some damage since it will be harder to double him.

Now we have two guys with a penchant for dominating in the fourth quarter.

Our next trick is to still be in games when the fourth quarter rolls around. ;)

Carl Landry

Carl Landry was measured 6' 7.75" w/o shoes 6'8.5" w/shoes

He has a 6'11" wingspan, 8'6.5" reach, 7.5% body fat, 36.5" vert

those stats look pretty good, hes kinda short but looks strong.

Yeah, his fourth quarter scoring makes him unique--it's definitely a star attribute. But how many games are we going to be in by the time the 4th quarter occurs?

I still see him as largely a super efficient scorer above anything else. Which is not bad because we do need scoring to replace KMart, but this strikes as more of an acute move above anything else. Prior to trading KMart, after all, we were looking for disruptor/shotblocker.

Why do you say that? I understand we just got blown out by the warriors and never had a chance but I'm pretty sure most of our games we do have chances in the 4th to come back in win, we just fail to take advantage of them. Landry may not score like Kevin, but his 4th quarter scoring compared to Kevins will make this team instantly better.

I would have much rather have had Landry taking those free throws against the Celtics than JT or Omri.

we've actually been in quite a few this year. tyreke has stepped up, but it's great to know we may have a legit 2nd option now.
