A "Skills Coach"?

Kingster

Hall of Famer
There could be considerable time between the firing of Muss and the hiring of a new coach, and even more time passing before the assistants are hired. The trading of Artest is probably going to delay the hiring process even further because nobody in his right mind will want to take the job with him on the team. So, I'm a little worried about all our young talent not having the coaching they need for the offseason. I've heard that Williams will be working with a strength and conditioning coach in offseason. Presumably, he's in the gym right now. It sounds like this conditioning coach (sorry, can't remember the name) is not a part of Muss's staff, and therefore would not be terminated if Muss is. (Please correct me if I'm wrong). So, my question is, shouldn't the Kings have a "skills coach" who is also on the staff, independent of the head coach, who can immediately start working with Price, Williams, Douby, Cisco, and Martin on their respective games?

These guys aren't 3rd graders......

They mostly take this time to rest and recover and then beginning training in a couple of weeks. There is plenty of time and they can afford to hire their own "skills coach" if they want to for now.

Price can't. Williams can't. Neither can Douby. Those are the guys that need one.

You're talking about Pete Youngman and I don't think he's part of the coaching staff either. And I agree, the Kings need skills coach instead of having players hire one. The last one I remember for the Kings was Pete Carrill, but he taught Princeton offense and not individual skills it seems. Development should be an important part of basketball and not just drafting good players alone. It would be nice if someone teaches Williams how to post, do some dream shake, and do sky hooks.

FYI - The assistant coaches were NOT fired. They're still on board, hopefully to work with the guys (especially the kids) until the new coach is selected.

Ahh, so presumably they are here during the summer working with the young guys until the new assistants come in?

That's what I heard. And don't be surprised if a couple of them remain after the new coach is selected. Guys like Jason Hamm, for example, who really show a lot of hustle are well worth keeping. He's the one who has been working with Garcia before games to the point where some early game goers wondered who the white guy out there with Garcia was because they couldn't match him to anyone in the program. :)
