Don't Make Me Use The Bat
A number of things did not go the way I was hoping they would on draft day. But failing to move up and ending up witrh Hawes was actually not the most aggravating event. Instead watching things happen later in the draft -- Jason Smith is drafted by the Heat, whom we have had trade talks with, and traded...to the Sixers. Watching Kyrylo Fesenko and Petteri Koponen, again two guys we had been rumored to be interested in, dangle out there in the 30s, get their rights traded...and again into and out of Philly respectively, with us nowhere to be heard.
But maybe the MOST annoying was watching Tiago Splitter, who has been on everybody's NBA radar forever as an NBA ready 7'0" defensive minded big, slide, slip, tumble, down past teams flat out selling their picks off, past teams looking to trade, past teams in win now mode...all the way to the San Antonio Spurs at #28. #28! That was annoying. Even if he does not come over until next year, come on now!
Well, maybe, like the Yi situation, there is a longhsot way for us to have a second chance at the apple. Story this morning out of Chicago, mentioning that Andres Nocioni might be traded if his price gets too high, and in particular to make room for that scoring PF the Bulls still need after rather pointedly ignoring Hawes. Article also mentions that two teams who have long been admirers of Nocioni are San Antonio and the Lakers:

The following deal works financially, even if I have my doubts whether the great San Antonio mahcine works this way. The Splitter script could not have been any better written for them:
Sac OUT:
Shareef Abdur-Rahim $5.9mil
Sac In:
Brent Barry $5.8mil (ender)
rights to Tiago Splitter (who will likely not come over until next year)
Chi OUT:
Andres Nocioni $6-$8mil (listed range in article) S&T
Chi IN:
Shareff Abdur-Rahim $5.9mil
San Antonio OUT:
Brent Barry $5.8mil (ender)
rights to Tiago Splitter
San Antonio IN:
Andres Nocioni $6-$8mil
Figure Barry is 36, barely played in the playoffs, and Nocioni is the best player in the deal to add a little youth and muscle to that creaky SF crew, and reteam with fellow countryman Manu. So...maybe? In any case, San Antonio does not have what Chicago has been rumored to want (scoring PF) to trade directly, so in order to get Nocioni they would likely have to involve a third team. Hoping we are jumping up and down waving our arms in the crwod screaming "pick me!".
