BTW, I haven't been to Fresno enough to have any sort of a strong feeling one way or the other, but from what little I have been able to gather throughout my visits to the city, it doesn't seem too bad of a place.

Bakersfield is the 'a$$-end of the universe' coined by an old friend - and it is. Spent a bit more time in Visalia which is better than either of them - though smells of cow-manure worse than most NORCAL places.
