This is how to fix the team (Though you may not like it)

Exactly.

In my mind Salmons (or rather his ending contract), Thornton and Jimmer are trade bait and obviously we let James Johnson walk

Personally I'd build a team centered around winning in the playoffs - big, imposing, defensive and able to score in the halfcourt. And I'd start by resinigng Tyreke.

Tyreke back at PG, DMC at either PF or C depending on who we pair him with, IT off the bench in a Jason Terry type role, Jason Thompson ideally as the 3rd big, PPat as an option to stretch defenses, Toney Douglas as the third PG

Essentially that means filling three spots. Both wing spots would ideally add shooting and defense with at least one of them being a good ballhandler/passer. The second big should be a shot blocker/rebounder. Passing and post offense would be bonuses.

Between free agency, a trade and the draft that's doable.

Unless Salmons was amnestied the Kings will have some caproom but not enough to make a huge splash. So either Johnny Fish gets packaged in a big deal (Granger maybe?) or if Ranadive & co can handle the cost, you amnesty him and free up cash to go after a mid level FA that is a good fit.

The draft should surely fill one spot. Whether it's Porter at the 3, Noel or Gobert next to Big Cuz, Oladipo at the 2 etc there's guys that can fit the roles I've laid out. As a side note, if he lasts until the 2nd round Allen Crabbe is a guy I like a lot in terms of fit.

And a trade packaging Thornton & Jimmer (and possibly Salmon's contract or even Chuck Hayes if he has any value) should bring back the third starter and some bench help.

It's hard to lay out an exact scenario because obviously it starts with where the Kings end up in the lottery and how active they are on draft day. But the approach is the thing for me. I don't want small ball. I don't want run-and-gun. I want winning basketball. Golden State looks like a fantastic young team, but I'm hoping they aren't the blueprint for the Kings because what talent currently exists on this roster would be much better served with a more Memphis or Indiana like approach to team building.
indeed. and even though the warriors do look like a fantastic young team, there's a reason they finished 6th overall in the western conference. 3-point shooting teams without an effective attack in the paint don't get to the finals. they just don't. they don't get to the free throw line often enough, and it's far too easy to take away outside shooting in a seven-game series. the warriors (and the knicks, for that matter) were doomed when faced with a defense that eliminated their primary offensive threat: the 3-pointer...

stephen curry is on an all-star trajectory, but he has no clear path to the basket, and much of that is due to his size. he can't muscle his way to the rim when the defense takes away his outside shot. golden state gets by with a plethora of jump-shooting threats, but if you stay home on the shooters, it's much harder for them to win. as much as everybody likes to talk about trading david lee's albatross of a contract, i hold the opinion that he might have been he difference in the warriors' series against the spurs, if healthy. he's a poor interior defender, but he can do what few other warriors can do--score consistently in the paint. funnily enough, while steph curry was bricking his way through the last few games of that series, it was jarrett jack who carried that team, because he was able to get to the rim from time to time...

so, as far the kings are concerned, i maintain that, if you build a team that scores at the rim, that rebounds well, and that plays solid defense--both on the perimeter and in the paint--then you're on your way to the playoffs, sooner rather than later. a team centered around demarcus cousins and tyreke evans can become that team, and it won't even require clever GM'ing to get it done. bring in defensive-minded role players who can rebound the ball, and maybe one or two that can space the floor with some outside shooting, and rely on DMC and 'reke for the bulk of your scoring. oh, and be sure to hire a coach with a head for team defense and a consistent philosophy (as always, JVG strikes me as the best man for the job). that's a playoff team in a couple of seasons...

Agreed. However, looking at the free agent market, unless the new ownership can bring in a Dwight Howard or Chris Paul in free agency or pull off a series of ridiculous one-sided trades, there is no "win now" option available. The roster is a low-talent, ill-fitting mess, starting with our glut of 2-guards. Whether Tyreke stays or leaves is almost beyond the team's control at this point. I have a sinking feeling that Minnesota or Phoenix will drop a max or near-max contract on him to shore up their weakest position.
I understand your pessimism but one productive summer could result in major improvements.

As an example, draft Burke, trade Thornton + JT for Granger, sign Dalembert, hire McMillan or Sloan. It's just going to take a GM that knows the roles needed to start winning. We don't need Chris Paul or Howard to start competing for a playoff spot. Phoenix and Mimmy don't have the cap space for a max free agent, btw

See if we could get Robin Lopez for MT. Draft a PG, move IT to the bench.

OR.....

Trade Fredette, and Evans to Utah for Favors, Draft a PG and move IT to the bench. This one probably wont be popular.

Evans can be traded, but he must want to come to Utah, otherwise S&T just doesn't work.
Anyway Utah appears to be set on building around Favors, Kanter and Hayward.
But my point as always: let these guys play some time under proper coaching. Patch obvious holes, manage obvious redundancy of little scoring guys and evaluate reasonably modified current roster, then at the deadline move pieces that still don't fit.
No way you move forward with both Jimmer and IT. Major defensive liability for 20 minutes is manageable. Would prefer to move Jimmer if #25-40 pick this year or future first rounder is available. Thornton became much comfortable after Brooks trade and posted some impressive numbers after ASW. He's a liability at SG defensively, but held his own against PGs in that short period after the trade from NO. So for me it's a choice between IT and Thornton as third guard. If reasonable defense against PG showed by Thornton was just a mirage, IT is the choice for first guard off the bench. Douglas is a decent defensive guard, good enough to be #4 in rotation. There's also Salmons lurking, and I don't want any of these players coming into the games as SFs, which means Kings likely need 2 forwards. Dorrell Wright and Morrow would be stop-gap solutions, or maybe Kings should aim higher and try prying away Deng or Granger, though $12+ million make it harder to achieve.
Chuck is a serious problem offensively as he lacks mobility and jumper to punish teams for leaving him alone. He's 4th big at best, and at this point would rather have Aldrich occupy that spot if he comes back for under $3 million per.
Thompson had excellent stretch in January or February, but other than that his rebounding slipped even further and now it seems like there might be a choice to make between JT and Pat.
