I'm not a 49ers fan, so maybe you guys don't want me answering :p but my answer is no I don't think they should pursue Peyton. I think the growth in Alex Smith, both in his play and maturity was so profound, you don't mess it up. You continue to build on that chemistry that this team had in 2011 and you go for another run. This team will most likely not be challenged at all in the West this year and that should mean another division title and possible first round bye.

If you sign Peyton, you slap Alex in the face. You also risk losing the cohesiveness built by the team last year. And how healthy is Peyton?? What if you sign him and he gets hurt?

Too much risk involved if you ask me.

BTW, FWIW I'm a Cowboys fan, and yes I'd sign him in a heartbeat :D

In my mind, one decent season by Smith doesn't mean you pass on the opportunity to get a QB the caliber of Peyton Manning.

Every team in need of a proven QB should and will go after Peyton. It would be stupid not to. I'm not a 49ers fan but to answer the question, yes they definitely should go after him. As of right now though, I'd have to guess that the Dolphins, Cardinals, and Redskins would be the favorites.

If they felt confident he was healthy, then I'd say yes. But if they weren't sure, then probably not.
My feeling is that he's going to be put through a thorough battery of tests before any team commits a large amount of money to him. Of course, after I started this poll I remembered what happened when Joe Montana was signed by the Chiefs. ...sigh...

No tests they run can replicate a hit from a blitzing OLB from the blindside. He's too much of a risk to sign.

We were one quarterback away from the Super Bowl last year. I think you take the shot when it is there as Super Bowls don't come around often. And, to think Alex Smith is the long term answer at the QB spot is giving an awful lot of credit to one year that was adequate and ignoring a whole bunch of years of inadequacy. I said "adequate." There was nothing special that Smith did last year. Let's put Peyton behind our maturing and very good offensive line and let him have his way. Peyton will retire about the time Gore loses his gifts so let's not waste what we have.

I'm hoping he goes to Denver. While having two of my least favorite QBs on my alternate favorite team might make my head explode, it may make me happier long term.

I'm still pretty convinced Peyton had lost it in 2010 and will be a bust on whatever team he winds up on. It's really a shame he and the Colts couldn't have worked something out to end his career the way it properly deserves.

If it was the Mannings who came to the 49ers, it's a good sign as far as the team's chances of landing Manning. That is, it means he was pursuing them and not the other way around. It also explains (somewhat) the timeline. Until Monday, all indications were that the 49ers were pursuing Alex Smith, not Manning. Then on Monday or Tuesday morning, perhaps, the team got a call from the Manning camp. "We hear you're having trouble signing Alex Smith. Would Peyton Manning interest you?" Jim Harbaugh and Greg Roman flew to Durham, N.C. Tuesday night, watched Manning throw presumably on Wednesday, which leads us to today.

Then again, the rumors that the 49ers were a "mystery team" have been consistent since Manning and the Colts parted ways March 7. On March 11, the Denver Post's Mike Klis wrote that the 49ers soon would be jumping into the fray, which came true. That information certainly began with Manning's representatives, who also represent Smith. That is Smith could have - should have - known about a 49ers-Manning interest for some time now, which might explain why no deal was signed.

And in unrelated news....

The enemy is now the teammate.

Free-agent wide receiver Mario Manningham, who caught a key touchdown for the Giants in the NFC Championship game against the 49ers, agreed Saturday to a two-year contract with San Francisco, according to a league source. Manningham, 25, visited the 49ers on Thursday and was in St. Louis on Saturday. The Giants also were interested in bringing him back.

When he signs his contract, the former Michigan standout will join Randy Moss, Michael Crabtree, Kyle Williams and Joe Hastings as wide receivers signed for the 2012 season. How the top three - Moss, Crabtree and Manningham - will rotate is unknown, but the 49ers have been interested in seeing how Crabtree, their top wide receiver in 2011, would work as a slot receiver.

The team also is likely to draft a receiver - perhaps one with punt-return skills - in next month's draft. Last season's return man, Ted Ginn, visited the Ravens today and, with Manningham's imminent signing, is not expected back. Ginn also has visited the Lions.

Hate the idea of Peyton getting all that money when I think he will be a bust but credit to Elway for getting rid of Tebow the only way possible. If they can get someone to overpay based on last season that would be fantastic.

Matt Flynn to Seattle, so anyone who wondered how he was going to pan out, pretty sure he's going to suck now :D

I'm curious to see who's going to trade for Tebow.. someone will, but I highly doubt it will be as a starter.

I'm also curious as to why Flynn chose Seattle of all places? Was it strictly money?

To the 49er fans:

So, with Peyton becoming a Bronco, and Alex Smith possibly becoming a Dolphin, what happens to the QB position in SF?

Is Smith going to stay now that Peyton's out of the picture?

I've said all along that a guy like Harbaugh can probably pick up a mid-draft QB and work wonders with him. I think he should grab one on the second day of the draft, one of those "just a system" kind of guys, and work him along. A lot of times its the guys with no pressure that come in and get 2-3 years to blossom in the background, get a spot start and they're off and running. I guarantee one of the top 2 picks this year will be a bust.

I think Smith will probably stay not that Manning is out of the picture. The biggest danger was that Manning might take a while to make his decision and Smith would go the Dolphins to make sure he landed somewhere. But since he hasn't signed there, he probably won't.

The SF situation is much better for him. It's likely the same or more money. He'll probably be the starter, at least to start this year, versus in Miami where he'd have to compete. Obviously he's had issues in new systems every year of his career, so coming back to the same system would make sense for him. As long as the offer is still on the table he will probably end up taking it.

If Smith doesn't come back, they could just start Kaepernick, but they could also go after Josh Johnson or someone like that to give him some competition.

They already have Kaepernick for that. He was drafted on the second day last year (near the top of the second round). He's the reason Smith didn't take the offer right away. Apparently they structured Smith's offer to not lose too much money if/when Kaepernick was ready to take over as starter.
