ORLANDO, Fla. - As negotiations get underway over how to fund a new downtown sports arena, the focus of today's talks is the contribution to the project by the Maloof family, which owns the Sacramento Kings.

City officials have asked the Maloofs to contribute between $70 million and $90 million toward the project, according to a source briefed on the negotiations who was not authorized to speak because the talks are ongoing. The source indicated that all other major issues with the arena financing plan have been addressed.

It is not clear how far apart - if at all - the Maloofs and the city are in terms of the Kings' contribution to the $387 million project. But sources expressed confidence that the sides were within a "solvable" distance.

The Maloofs have reportedly been asked to provide upfront lease payments to the arena, as well as provide an estimated $25 million in land they own around Power Balance Pavilion.

Talks were scheduled to take place today from noon until 2 p.m. Eastern Time. Involved in those talks are City Manager John Shirey; Assistant City Manager John Dangberg; the city's arena consultant, Dan Barrett; Kunal Merchant, the chief of staff to Mayor Kevin Johnson; and attorney Paul Jacobs.

Executives with the NBA are also in attendance.

More informal talks are expected to continue throughout the day.

More intense talks are scheduled for tomorrow that are expected to involve the mayor and NBA Commissioner David Stern. Stern is scheduled to address the media tonight during his annual NBA All-Star Game press conference.

Are we to conclude that if this deal falls apart it is the NBA and/or the maloofs fault then? Sounds to me like the city has done their part. Might it be out of our hands now?

Sounds like it. If the arena is not built, it is the Maloofs' fault. They could hardly file to move in that circumstance. The city has not only done its job but set a trap.

Yep, Maloofs appear to be boxed in a corner on this one and if they can't perform the Burkle bomb is the ultimate answer.

My guess is the NBA just loans them the 80 mill and they pay it back in a 30 year lease at like 3 mill/year.
Not sure the NBA does that. If there's one thing we've all learned, it's that the Maloofs suck at paying back loans (see the Palms, their debt to the city)

Not to mention, arent they already into the NBA for around $100mil?
I think so. I don't know how they're going to make any contribution though if that stuff is really that big of an issue. Because if they can't contribute via cash or loan between 60-80 mill here(60 wont even get arena done, but really there's not much difference between 60 or 80, you either have the cash to pay that back or you dont), they are going to have to move to Anaheim and take Samueli's loan which they won't be able to pay back and he'll get the team. I don't think Stern wants that. So there comes Burkle I guess?

Stern said meeting with Sac happened today, that he wasn't that involved with it much, but tomorrow he will have a lengthy meeting with KJ and others regarding Sac Arena situation. Mentioned a March 1st deadline for financing is the focus.

Stern mentioning the Maloofs will make a substantial contribution. Says Sacramento has stepped up and the Maloofs have as well. And the Mayor has done wonders.

Sounds like Stern is thinking this Arena deal is going to happen.

Thanks for the update. Kind of following on twitter. Have family over so I can't turn it over to NBATV right now lol. I watch it sometimes but when it comes to Kings news they suck.

As Carmichael Dave put it, cost for the Maloofs to relocate (paying off loan all at once and relocation fee) is still probably less for them than the cost of contributing to an arena.

I am cautiously optimistic.

Stern: Maloofs have thrown themselves into the team. We will see if we can bridge that gap. Both sides (city and team) deserve that.

Sounds to me like the Maloofs are maxed out and the NBA will be bridging the difference via loan or something. Not sure how this is going to go.
Maybe the league gets a piece of the team? Can't imagine they're willing to nearly double-down on the Maloofs.

He spoke wrong, he meant that the cost to relocate and pay off the loan is more than contribute to arena. Their contribution estimate at 80 mill vs relo fee of 150 mill+paying off loan of 70 mill.

I dunno, league owning a piece of the team is already causing problems with the hornets and their ability to make trades. With the Maloofs owing money to the NBA already it's already like the NBA owns part of the team, because if the Maloofs would default they would lose that amount of ownership to the league. As far as I know anyway.
