Sabotaging Anaheim's city council vote

#1
What if we all sent in a bunch of letters/emails, pretending to be from people in Anaheim, urging them to VOTE NO on this issue and that government/city money can be used for more important things, "such as homeless people, schools, police, and firefighters!". Yeah I know that logic is retarded logic, but maybe it's time we take a page from the nimby's over at the Sacbee forums and steal their content and attempt to make these leaders of Anaheim think it'd be extremely un popular? If we could get them to vote no, I doubt the Kings would move this year. Atleast it'd make it harder. Sometimes you got to be dirty to win, this might be one of those times. Eh? Eh?

I already have thought of how to do it. We could actually just lie in our emails/letters and say we're from anaheim, or even not say that but imply it and just say "if you approve this I will not vote for you in the next election". That technically wouldn't be a lie and could work, and is probably the safest way to go. The other way might be slightly illegal, but is probably the most effective. It could require setting up different email accounts under hotmail, gmail or whatever, etc. Then coming up with fake aliases/using people's names out of something like an anaheim phonebook, and impersonating those people. Thoughts? Could we actually pull this off and would we be willing to? We actually wouldnt even need that many people, just a bunch of different email addresses/names.

edit: also, another effective tactic would be impersonating laker fans down in the OC and saying we do not want a 3rd team to detract from the lakers.

An email has a whole bunch of data attached to it that we don't usually see. They would know where the notes were coming from if they cared to check. Otherwise it is fiendishly brilliant.

Yeah, that idea that a third team shouldn't go there is pretty unique.
LOL Obviously it is not unique but if we pretended to be lakers fans making our voices heard, than yeah it could work. Anyway we can hide that data???

I think an email would be fine. I doubt councilmembers are smrt enough to check IP addresses and server locations. I just don't see it. But hey, pull out all the stops. Get their email addresses, and I'll send a few as well.

...see what I did there?

are you guys really worrying about the legality of sending an email?

These are politicians were talking about. They live off corruption. Who cares if you send emails from various accounts. I'm up for it.

Why should someone else get the email addresses? This is part of the problem. There is an expectation that someone else will take care of the problem. Well, here we are. No one took care of it and our backs are against the wall.

I'll get around to it pretty soon. They don't vote on the issue for another 3.5 weeks, April 12th, so we have a little while.

The ease of presenting a false reality in this situation is your window to see its ineffectiveness.
no idea what you're trying to say but I don't really care anyway. The point is, if we dont do something then the Kings will definitely leave. If we do something, they still probably will but atleast we know we tried. I'd rather know I tried.

I have sort of mixed feelings about all this, but I rather doubt that Kings fans in OC will be contacting the city council with the message I'd like, so...

The format for users over there is first initial+last name @anaheim.net

Assuming these are given out to city council members as well as employees, that would make the addresses:
ttait (mayor)
hsidhu (mayor pro tem)
lgalloway
geastman
kmurray

Haven't tried 'em, no guarantees.

The mayor's state of the city speech last year dealt with multimillion dollar city deficits, and he tried to portray himself as favoring spending cuts. You will probably have a pretty easy time selling this message.

Do consider, though, that this thread shows up pretty high on Google any time you're searching for related things, so you can't really expect this to remain secret for very long. I'd be surprised if nobody in Anaheim city government noticed this thread in advance of the meeting.

I see ther Doug Elmets is saying, "Boycott!".

I have a better idea: Go to the April 1 game, but boo like mad. Any time a Royals player touches the ball, act like we're in New York, and the Red Sox are in town.

Because I was away from my computer and not able to do the legwork. You're getting awfully crabby.

You bet I am. Now it turns out that the Anaheim City Council has yet to even vote on money for NBA quality lockers or a practice facility. The NBA can shut this down. The vote at Anaheim is April 12 and the clock is ticking. I have offered my services. Email adress are on the computer. Look up each team.

Yes, I am crabby. 3 weeks.

So, I used the email format fnordius threw out with this message. I live in L.A., so I have some sort of familiarity with the Anaheim region. Here is the message I sent them. Please don't copy and paste as that only negates the whole purpose of having "many citizens from Anaheim" voicing their concerns.

Dear Anaheim city council members,

I am writing to express my deep felt concern and anger at this proposed financing for the Honda Center renovation. I cannot fathom to understand why at this state of affairs that the country, region, and city is in, we are proposing to help finance a renovation with tax payer dollars. My beloved Anaheim Ducks call Honda Center home. We will be having the NCAA tournament next week. The greatest music artists visit the Honda Center for live performances. Big name boxing events. UFC and various other MMA organizations have held events at the Honda Center. Yet, we are trying to satisfy a bunch of bankrupt owners from Northern California? Small business has been hit tremendously hard during this recession and we are possibly looking at a double dip recession that can hit at any time. We should be using funding for the expansion of markets, Anaheim school district, and simply fixing the glaring financial problems that Anaheim possesses.

The Honda Center was recently renovated in 2005. Whenever I go to Ducks games, I have an enjoyable experience, not just because of the game, but because of the great atmosphere that the arena possesses. Everything inside is modern for the 21st century that we live in.

What many do not understand is that the Maloof Brothers (owners of the Sacramento Kings) squandered nearly all of their fortune on ridiculous investments. From trying to be playboys and initiating ridiculous projects in Las Vegas for their Palms casino to running their beer distributorship (Coors, MIller, Corona, Heineken, Tecate, Boston Beer, Red Bull, Guiness) into the ground, which was what their family fortune was built on. They have lost nearly all of their father's fortune and now are bailing when the going gets tough. They are leaving Sacramento because they want a new arena. What makes you think that they won't bail on Anaheim when they demand a new arena as well? The Honda Center started to be built in 1990 and finished in 1993. What will happen when they demand a new arena in Anaheim? They are ATTEMPTING to come to Anaheim because of the money, not because of the dedicated fans that Anaheim possesses or the city of ANAHEIM itself. I read that the Sacramento Kings fans were one of the most loyal NBA fans in the league, so that aspect apparently means nothing to the Maloof brothers.

The fact also still remains that the Lakers still dominate this region. They dominate nearly all of Southern California. You will be adding a THIRD team within a 30 mile radius. A VAGABOND team.

With all due respect city council members, I am not simply some high on emotion uninformed citizen that would like no change. I do my research before speaking, but I am not going to sit here and pretend that we do not want an NBA franchise. What city wouldn't? Though, I vehemently oppose using any public money to help an unnecessary cause.

If the Maloof brothers want to come to Anaheim. Sure, let them do so. But, it remains to be seen if they can sustain themselves financially. They are already asking for loans left and right. Not only from the Anaheim Arena Management, but are now looking to suck out more blood from the city itself.

This makes me sick and if the city council does end up approving this issue, then you can expect myself and my fellow colleagues at the Anaheim school district to vote you out of office during the next election.

Thank you for your attention,

Alex

Thanks. Have you put your idea into action? After reading that little article about the reaction of the OC fans I began to wonder.

Very nice Alex. You brought up points only a citizen would know. Very interesting perception and I suspect very accurate. I'll write a note and leave out some of the points. It was very complete and now we need to add numbers of notes.

I used a search engine to find the email address and this was on the front page of search results:

Wow, what an idea! Let's go boo our own team before they've signed a deal to leave. Do you WANT the team to move? Do you WANT to be counterproductive to any possible effort to keep the Kings in town?

Wait, don't bother repsonding. You've already made the answer obvious. Thanks for all your good work in trying to force the Kings out of town.

So, I got a reply from the Executive Director of the City of Anaheim’s Convention, Sports & Entertainment.

The email format that fnordius posted works

Here's what he wrote:

Greetings Mr. xx,

My name is Tom Morton and I am the Executive Director of the City of Anaheim’s Convention, Sports & Entertainment department.

Thank you very much for your email to the City regarding your concern of using tax payer dollars to finance renovations at the Honda Center. We too share your concerns and would be happy to meet with you and discuss further.

Please let me know if you are available toward the latter part of this week. Thank you again for your email.

Regards,

Tom
Hopefully they aren't calling my bluff in trying to meet with me, or maybe they are trying to cater to me when I said I would notify "fellow colleagues at the Anaheim school district" to not vote for them, but it looks like the Anaheim city council is against that measure in general as well.

That is the most retarded thng I have ever heard.. I might not attend the games anymore but if I did I'm not going to boo the players when they are caught in the middle.

if the anaheim city council respond to your email, let them know that you will be attending on April 12 to let your voice heard. Let them start thinking about it. The more the better. Those emails work guys. Send away!

They actually have an Executive Director of the City of Anaheim’s Convention, Sports & Entertainment department? Does Sacramento have such a thing?

I kind of doubt his sincerity as he doesn't know what a bond is. Anyway, at the least it is entertaing. I kinda wonder if they have figured out how to read the info that IDs an email's sender. I wish I could jump up and down with happiness. I'll settle for this until the big moment occurs.

Awesome job dude. Don't worry about the guy wanting to meet with you, soon we can just get so many emails he wont possibly be able to meet with people and he'll forget about it. He might be doing it to call your bluff, but we know it seems like it has a chance to work.
