Sacramento city councilmember promises to continue push for arena

City Councilwoman Angelique Ashby Sunday said Sacramento will continue working on plans to build a new sports arena, even if the Sacramento Kings leave the city. She said a new arena "serves this community on multiple levels" beyond being a place to play basketball.

Ashby's statement comes a day after NBA Commissioner David Stern confirmed team management is in discussions with officials in Anaheim about moving the team there.

The possibility of the Kings leaving Sacramento has been driving politicians, developers, and fans to push for a new arena for more than a decade.

But Ashby said a new arena is a good idea even if it's star tenant has left town. "I hope they stay but if the Kings chose to leave, we will miss them and wish them well," she said. "We will welcome other opportunities to enrich this region."

How about: "It is of my personal utmost importance to keep the Kings in Sacramento", as opposed to "well, if they leave, then shucks." There's nothing about that quote that inspires me. A new arena without a professional sports team? Sweet!

I noticed that too but I'm also trying to see things from another perspective and that being her message is to the naysayers who do not want to spend our tax dollars on "a billionaire playboy's mansion."

Her message was basically a new arena is needed and it's not just for basketball. It's for many other events too, although I do agree with you I wish she had said something like, "We want to keep our Kings in Sacramento."

I actually find the quote very dis-heartening.

Her statement seemed to say: "Having a venue in which to host world-class entertainment is something which we want to have in Sacramento to enrich the lives of our citizens."

If that's the case, why wouldn't you work to put this together when you have the opportunity to have a primary tenant with the Kings and the Maloofs to ensure the success of the venue?

It almost seems as if they think they are better off having a venue on their own terms with-out having to deal with a primary tenant.

I'll be very upset if the Kings re-locate and the the City finally decides to get an arena built now that they can control how it's all going to play out.

You have to also understand there are many folks around here who do not like the Maloofs, the Kings or basketball. She is reaching out to those folks too and basically telling them we need a new arena no matter what.

That's true.

Here's a question for you:

Do you think there are a lot of people in Sacramento who would support the building of a new arena provided that the Maloofs weren't involved? The mentality being that the new arena would be better for Sacramento rather than being better just for the Maloofs?

I think that such thinking is completely backwards as having a primary tenant and a pro-basktball team will only help, but do you think something of that mentality might exist?

This has little todo with the Maloofs. It has to do with the fact that the unemployment rate is sky high and the economy is in the tank, If u were unemployed would you support a tax to pay for an arena or would you rather money that is taxed go to schools etc?

A new arena because it creates and keeps jobs.

There are those like myself that will be more than happy to pay a tax on funding a new arena no matter what the deal is.

But there are others who do not want their tax dollars going to any kind of arena deal at all. Those same people also believe there is nothing wrong with ARCO Arena and that it can be renovated because it has "good bones." They're a lost cause.

This is just my opinion, but I believe City Councilwoman Angelique Ashby is trying to reach out to those on the fence more than those naysayers.

Yeah she is sending a message to all arena haters, that it's something that needs to be done no matter what and that it's not just for the kings, it's for attracting entertainment options to Sac and keeping people coming in from Chico, Redding, Bay Area, Tahoe, etc. to spend their money in Sacramento.

I hope you do realize the following:

1. If you think unemployment is bad now, wait until the Kings move and take with them 1,000 jobs. I don't care if the job pays $8 per hour or $100,000 per year. A job is still a job. There are hundreds of people showing up for just a few minimum wage positions. If I remember correctly, I believe there were some recent hiring events. One was in West Sacramento for In-N-Out and another in Rancho Cordova for Sprint. I'd have to research that.

2. Creating a new arena would save those jobs but also create more from construction to anything else related such as retail, sales, restaurants, etc.

3. We already have money going to our schools through both city and state taxes. An arena is not going to take away but rather give more to our local economy. It takes money to make money.

Exactly my thoughts too.

Because money incoming will also be taxed, thereby providing additional resources to said schools.
( I know you know this, but others seem a bit dense.)

I'm not gonna dive into an argument about this again, but lets just say studies are mixed about this topic.
Before Lukenbill brought the Kings to Sacramento, what was Natomas like? Nothing but farm land.

Then ARCO Arena 1 was built. Soon buildings were rising to create jobs and services.

Now take a look at what's near the current ARCO Arena. Lots of new neighborhoods, schools, roads, resturants, grocery stores, shopping centers, etc.

That's the only study I need.

Hey Angelique Ashby, GO TO HELL.. I won't give two craps about your new arena if the Kings aren't in it. You had your chance to keep them, and now you build an arena after the leave? Screw you.

Yah not to mention those 10,000-17,000 that 41 nights a year make a night of things in Sacramento after/before going to a Kings game and pumping some money into the local businesses.

The politicians in Sac are a joke.. Screw them. Do people even realize that 41 nights a year Natomas gets an extra 10,000-17,000 people out on the town? My brother runs the On The Border restaurant in Natomas and those home Kings games he sees business rise by 40-50%.. 41 nights a year...... If the Kings leave then that location will close down guaranteed. They are barely staying afloat right now as it is. The Kings games help that business... A LOT of places in Natomas will be closing down when the Kings leave.. All because the idiots wanted to save some pennies. Retards.

Not to mention other events such as Disney on Ice that is taking place now and WWE Smackdown that is taking place on Tuesday night.

These politicians seem to get it. It was during the Heather Fargo era that nothing was done and it was status quo.

The ones who don't seem to get it are the naysayers. They could care less one way or another.

Come back a year after they are gone and tell us how this al worked out better. Oh wait, there won't be a Kingsfans.com that is for Sacramento. Maybe you can hang out on the Bee and try and run off something else. I wonder what it's like in a world where doing nothing is veiwed as progress?

Hey I'm all for a tax for the arena, but I can understand people who are unemployed or govt workers fearing for their jobs.

Wow that's cold, they still have to buy things and pay sales tax.
The Q&R tax wasn't a bad deal at all. 25 cents for every $100 spent is not much.

We have no idea what Taylor/ICON will propose so let's just see what happens but in the meantime let's continue to show our support.

Yeah, like I said I'd be for it. Better yet lets tax anaheim for the water they steal from us to pay for the arena.

Its pretty sad that the NBA, an organization that pays they're employees redicilous ammounts of money can't fund arenas for THEY'RE TEAMS. I know thats not how it works but it just pisses me off.

The way these arena situations are handled just pee me off, "oh you have a nice shiny new arena, we are gonna give you a team, dont worry we will just take it from another city with a not so nice arena, but just remember, in 15 years when your arena sucks we will be giving your team to somebody else."

I'm also for all those things. But it has NOTHING to do with the problem we have now. It's just the usual tool that gets invoked by those who are anti-arena. They are just handy slogans to throw up to show how all our priorities are out of whack. It's all bull**** because those problems of education, employment, police, fire are always more important and existed before I was born and will be long after we are all dead and buried. These people feel like they've accomplished something by doing nothing. These are the people who contribute nothing to any of those important things in our lives. They just do what they do - nothing. Give me someone who has some vision, balls and builds things. Those are the people this world needs more of...
