Denver @ Philly, Iverson's first game back -- the Sixers shot 9 free throws in the game to 26 for the Nuggets and lost by 10 points. I tuned in midway through the third court and the free throw disparity was 16 to 2 in favor of Denver who was only down 4 points despite shooting a touch over 30% from the field. Another Dick Bavetta special?

History truly has been revised when ALLEN IVERSON is cited as an example for lack of calls. He's one of the worst floppers of all time. (And he was the first example of "best storyline" MVP.)

From my earliest involvement with Bavetta, I learned that he likes to keep games close, and that when a team gets down by double-digit points, he helps the players save face. He accomplishes this act of mercy by quietly, and frequently, blowing the whistle on the team that's having the better night. Team fouls suddenly become one-sided between the contestants, and the score begins to tighten up. That's the way Dick Bavetta referees a game — and everyone in the league knew it.
Denver was shooting 35% through 3 quarters and they were only down 2 pts going into the fourth quarter because of the free throw disparity. Denver opened the fourth quarter with a 14-0 run and the game was never close again. Allen Iverson has averaged 9 free throws per game for his career and when I turned this game on he'd played 25 minutes without shooting a single free throw.

Anomalies happen, he averages 9 a game. Sometimes he gets closer to 15, other times 3. Even happens to the Snake occasionally, believe it or not. He shot zero against Boston on Xmas in a nationally televised game. The refs wouldn't purposely freeze him out in the biggest RS game of the season before all of the league's fans, no? Garnett got zero in that same game, for that matter.

You're right, it could just be an anomaly. I thought the free throw stat was unusual (when have you seen a team shoot only 2 free throws through 2 and a half quarters?) so I looked up the ref assignments and saw Dick Bavetta's name. Surely it's no secret how (some) folks feel about Dick Bavetta around these parts. You of all people should know that. ;)

I think he sucks too, frankly. He's sure as hell not on my list of "friendly" (biased???????????) refs for my team. Joey and Javie are my boyz in that regard.

I like to pick on AI by habit, but I'm not taking the position that refs aren't human...used that term on purpose. I think there's personal tiffs w/ certain players, blatantly suspicious calls, star calls, and series extending techniques, but I don't think it's as complex as Donaghy wants us to believe. I say that because all those things were present before him and before Stern (O'Brien era).

There are worse things, but in terms respecting the opposition he showed none. And he was doing something on the line, whether that was dancing I am not really sure. Why else would have Noah shook his head as Lebron was shooting the free throws?
He wasnt doing anything on the line...but Noah saw him dancing before, got mad, and addressed LeBron while he was on the line. I don't think LeBron was taunting as he was just sort of dancing to the crowds/his teammates. All the same it was unnecessary and is the kind of thing that could lead to someone giving him a hard retaliatory foul one of these days.

So Stern says that a woman will play in the NBA within the next 10 years - up on fanball.com, no actual article I've found as of yet. Sources are citing the less physical play than in years past tolerated by the leauge. Thoughts...?
Both LEBron and Antony Parker said that they thought it was impossible within the next decade (Parker's opinion is interesting here since his sister is Candace Parker of course).

NBA ticket revenue slides 7.4 percent (UPDATE)

Average paid attendance is down 3.7 percent in the NBA through the first quarter of the regular season, sending gate receipts plummeting 7.4 percent, according to league documents obtained by CBSSports.com.

Net gate receipts, the money teams make from ticket sales, fell to an average of $828,985 per game, down from $894,823 at the same point last season. Only nine teams were up or flat in average net gate receipts through Nov. 29, while 21 teams saw a decline.

...

The other teams suffering the most at the gate are the Sacramento Kings (average gate receipts down 36.2 percent), Minnesota Timberwolves (down 24.4 percent), Phoenix Suns (down 23.8 percent), Los Angeles Clippers (down 23.3 percent), Milwaukee Bucks (down 23.2 percent), and Golden State Warriors (down 22.3 percent). Clearly, the Suns’ bottom line has not benefited from the team’s 15-7 start, nor have the Bucks been able to translate excitement over rookie point guard Brandon Jennings into ticket revenue.

McHale Reveals How Old Celtics Would Treat LeBron's Dancing

Joakim Noah didn't appreciate LeBron James' dancing last week and it is unlikely last year's MVP would get away with doing that 20 years ago.

"If a guy was doing the Riverdance like that, coach would come over and say, 'Who's got the fewest amount of fouls of my big fellas?' " said ex-Celtic and TNT analyst Kevin McHale. "If you raised your hand, he would say, 'We will let him drive and then we will throw him on the ground.'

"When he is laying there we would say, 'Do you feel like dancing now?'

"And that pretty much solved the dancing problem."

I love players that openly gripe about coming off the bench …but him mentioning Mikki Moore. lol

Brand, who was previously benched in some fourth quarters, said it was hard to complain about his role after a victory. He just can't believe he's considered a bench player early in the second year of an $80 million, five-year deal.

"When you look around at other teams, yeah," Brand said. "It's like, no disrespect, but [Golden State's] Mikki Moore gets the start and I don't. Not that he's not a good player, but, definitely."

Dwight Howard had 8 blocks tonight..
I wonder how many of them turned out to be Orlando's ball.

We know your strong, how about grabbing the ball instead of batting it into the stands. I'll never understand that. Same could be said about Lebron. It's so lame.

EVERYONE does that. Kenyon Martin does it. Josh Smith does it. It's showboating for the crowd and it makes it look a lot better than if you barely tap it and keep control. It's not a smart play at all, but I can't really criticize because I'm a shotblocker when I play and I sometimes do the same thing.

And Ariza was just frustrated with himself because he couldn't do anything right that game. Definitely no excuse to take a swing at someone like that, just saying. He let his emotions get to him.

He should take a page from Ron Artest's book, stop being so reactive to any little environmental cue.

Anyone see the highlights from the Bucks/Lakers last night? I ask only because the Lakers are coming to town and people tend to get upset how many Lakers fans show up. There were quite a few in Milwaukee too. Sounded like the Bucks won when Kobe hit the buzzer beater.
