soccer is the most popular sport in the whole world, EXEPT the Usa...
And that means absolutely zero, zilch, nada, zip, nothing. A large number of people in the world eat turnips, too, but that's not going to get me to put them on my plate.

If you want to argue about the game itself, fine. Bring it on. Explain to we the strategies involved, the ebb and flow of the game, etc. and maybe - MAYBE - I'll see your point.

Toss things like "everybody else likes it" and I'm not sold.

:)

it's a bunch of guys in shorts running around for an incredibly long period of time kicking a ball back and forth and occasionally bouncing it off their heads - or the heads of either their teammates or their opponents. And then, all of a sudden - usually with no advance warning of any kind - someone somehow scores a goal and the crowd goes insane and the players act as though they've all won the lottery.
LOL.

The problem with soccer is that it can be very boring if the teams are meh. I guess that's the problem if you're seeing USA soccer...I don't like it too much, but here in Spain is the main sport and we have the best league in the world. So we can see a lot of superstars playing, and some dribbling or imposible shots that only a few players in the world can do are incredibly awesome.

Thank you. That makes a least a little sense.

I can't look at the Youtube stuff, though. I'm possibly the only person left in North America with a slow dial-up connection for my internet.

I'm just teasing you - for the most part. I know tons of people love the game, I just happen to think it's nothing compared to basketball, NFL football and ... watching paint dry.

No, I don't think so. But I understand perfectly that if you only see USA Soccer, and on the other hand you have NBA, American Football and Baseball, you get bored of soccer very fast.

That doesn't happens in the rest of the world because soccer is the only sport they know.

People who love soccer by seeing USA League may exist, but they must be a very very very little minority.

almost at all the leagues i said there Busketball + volleball and all the other sports, its still not answering the question.

one thing is sure - i think the answer is the PASSION to the game.

Soccer is an extremely fun game to play, to me tied with basketball for my favorite. But I just can't stand watching it largely because there can be extremely long periods of time without anything exciting happening.

Again, thank you for at least a partial explanation that I understand. :)

When FromIsrael talks about passion, I'm even more confused. He's excited about the passion. BUT WHY IS THERE PASSION for a boring sport?

:p

Sorry, FromIsrael but I think there are way too many cultural differences for us to ever see this in the same way - which is fine. Read the last quote in my signature. :)

Well, "it's the only sport they know" it's an expression...

Of course, passion has to see a lot ;)

The point, I think, specially in some third world countries, is that soccer is very easy to play anywhere. You don't need a "real" goal or a really good ball to play it. But you can't play basketball without baskets and a quite good floor and a quite good ball, you can't play voleyball without a net, etc...

So this makes that soccer is played even in the poorest places of the world.

you know, theeres only 3 countrys all over the world whitch soccer isnt the most popular sport-
USa
India (cricket is)
and Lithunia (busketball is)

i think it say everything :)

and VF21 -

Ahhhh. Very good answer, sir. That makes complete and total sense. You're a little wrong about basketball, though, at least here. Basketball is so very popular in a lot of areas of poverty in the US because all you need is some old hoop somewhere (and they're everywhere) and a ball and you're set. And, unlike soccer, you don't need a whole lot of empty space upon which to play. You don't need the hardwood floor to play a pickup game of basketball, you don't even need a real hoop. the game was originally played with peach baskets with the bottoms knocked out...l

But thanks again. And did I ever welcome you to the board? we're very glad to have our new Spanish members and Israeli members here to add to our conversation and enjoyment of the game of basketball.

in the usa u have busketball court almost every 0.0001 miles.. in the 3rd world countrys you dont :p

#16
One other reason why basketball is really popular is because you can play with any amount of people you want and it is easy to play with just a couple of people. You can quite easily play 1v1 or 3v3 or 5v5, but in soccer it is a little more difficult to play with just a few people.

Um, wrong, wrong, wrong. The fact that there are three countries in the world where soccer isn't the most popular doesn't say a thing...other than different people enjoy different things. And selected Youtube clips wouldn't prove much either... I could find Youtube clips where people have been KILLED at soccer games because the fans were lunatics. I don't think that compares favorably to basketball - where the worst thing that happens is someone tosses a beer at a player, who rushes into the stand and hits the wrong guy.

Let's jsut agree to disagree, shall we?

Yes, I know there are a lot of basketball hoops anywhere...

But well, poverty areas there at least they have a floor in wich the ball can be bounced. And a ball that can be bounced can be bought anywhere.

But having a good floor to play basketball in Africa for example, and which is worse, having a ball that can be bounced, it's almost impossible. That's the main point I think: even if you have an awful hoop made somehow, you still can't bounce a ball... But you can play football even with a bag full of dirty clothes.

But thanks again. And did I ever welcome you to the board? we're very glad to have our new Spanish members and Israeli members here to add to our conversation and enjoyment of the game of basketball.

I lived in parts of Portugal, Spain, Turkey, Lebanon, Philippines and a few other places (including USA) while growing up - in 60's-70's. Back in those days there was maybe was not as much random ugly graffiti plastered all over the place like today. But interestingly, what was around often had less to do with gang markings than a single scribbled word - "Pele." I never saw his name marked anywhere in USA but saw it on lots of walls across parts of Europe, Mid East and East Asia.

Most people in USA don't realize even remotely his stunning greatness. At age 17 in 1958 he led Basil to the World Cup championship as the youngest player in that tourney and at the time youngest ever to play in a World Cup. He had 6 goals his 4 games and established himself as best striker in the world and soon best player ever in many futbol fans eyes. I know there's always debate of who is the greatest athlete of all time, the most famous, etc. For me, it's the amazing, incomparable, beautuful PELE!

Although I understand the grandiousity of Pele and what he must have been in his era, I prefer Maradona. Mainly because I think he had to play against much more better defenses. In the 60s it was easier to enhace over the rest than in the 80s.

And all of his problems with drugs, which makes him a kind of crazy rock star, makes him BIGGER. On the other hand we have Pele on Viagra spots... So 2-0 for Maradona. Hahaha.

I have learned there is definitely soooooo much more to soccer than the ball just being kicked around. I definitely agree with the notion that when it's played at its highest by its highest teams...it is indeed a beautiful game.

I cover women's pro soccer now so I have been immersing myself more into soccer than just watching during Olympic and World Cup years. Appreciating how the US manufactured that second goal today may not have happened for me a year ago. But I've always followed the World Cup just because it brings the best of the best and their fanatical fans. Now my watching extends to the international club teams. Hope to get out to the club and Gold Cup matches in the bay area next month. Good stuff.

I'm pleased that the US guys were disappointed with the outcome today and hope they are able to translate this into something positive the rest of the way and into 2010. Nice work by both teams today, entertainment all around.

Ok, I wanna add my 5 cents ))

First of all, YES, football is #1 sport in the World .. bar none!!!

However, there some other countries where football is not #1:

Canada - Hockey
Eastern Russia (Ural and Siberia regions) - Hockey.

And I wanna argue with our Spanish friend - EPL is #1 now )) I am personally a huge fan of Serie A but we all have to admit that EPL is better than both La Liga and Lega Calcio.

i still think the Barclays Premier league (the english league of course) is the best.. its the number 3 year in a row that theres 3 english teams in the semi finals! and one that gone down in the quater finals againast other english team.

btw im a big juve fans though
