Dallas Interested in Beno?

First the Star Telegram:

The Mavs, in fact, may be closer to adding another point guard than a shooting guard, which makes more sense when you consider that they may be looking to put Kidd’s heir in place.
They were close to pulling the trigger on a deal for Charlotte’s Raymond Felton until D.J. Augustin strained a hamstring. They also have eyes for Memphis’ Mike Conley and Sacramento’s Beno Udrih, provided they wouldn’t have to part with too much to get him.

Amick confirms:

While Salmons remains the most available King with the most value, Jim Reeves of the Fort Worth Star Telegram beat me to the punch in addressing the possibility that Beno Udrih could be on his way out too. Yesterday was the first day in which I'd heard of Dallas' interest in the Kings point guard, and it should surprise no one that they are willing to part ways with him at this point for the right package.
For as much as they hoped he would blossom after they gave him a five-year, $32 million deal over the summer, the counter argument was that point guards are more movable than most. Now at that price tag and given the way he has played this season, I'm not so sure about that at the moment.
Potential pieces that could come the Kings' way here would be point guard Jose Barea (this year and next, $3.1 combined guaranteed with team option at $1.8 million for 2010-11) and perhaps Brandon Bass ($826K, expiring deal). Of course neither makes enough to get up to Udrih money, so - as has been the case since the Mavericks tried to get Ron Artest over the summer - Jerry Stackhouse and his deal ($7 million this year, $7.2 next) have likely been in the talks.

This is the best rumor of the last weeks. Trading Beno for a 2010 expiring like Stackhouse would be much more important than trading Miller for Marion or Salmons for LaFrentz.

Bass? Barea? If you can get one of them, nice, but a simple Beno+filler (Douby or Shelden) for Stackhouse would be good enough.

I think this rumor just serves to illustrate that Beno's contract is plenty movable. But it doesn't seem really likely to me that we'd move him at this point without having a starting PG not named Bobby Brown lined up to take over - unless we got something pretty nice in return. I mean, it's not like he's breaking the bank. If it's that easy to trade him now, why don't we just wait until we have his replacement and then trade him?

Part of me hopes this is the harbinger of a Bayless acquisition...

There's no reason to concern ourselves with a replacement for Beno. It's the ping pong ball race now. If don't get a pg next year in the draft, we can get one in D league that's as good as Beno.

Wow, that would be fantastic if we could unload his contract. I'm surprised that anyone would take him at this point...but if Petrie can pull it off, salud!

Definitely don't mind having Stackhouse ride the bench for the next year and a half...much better situation than Beno assuming the "Kenny Thomas Chair of Wisdom" behind the bench for the next 4 years.

You mean HALF a season as he has a buy out much like Mikki Moore does.

yeah, Stackhouse has a $2million buyout next season. So it'd be like trading Beno for an expiring. Which just strikes me as a deal that's too good to be true.

As for our starting PG if Beno leaves, there are so many unemployed PG right now. Sign Damon Stoudamire or Troy Hudson or go for broke and see if Francisco can play PG. I don't care. Anyone of those guys can play better than Beno.

My worry about what Dallas proposed though is that it wasn't Stack, but rather Matt Carroll. Carroll would save us a few million each year over the lifetime of the contract, but otherwise... well, he's Matt Carroll.

I don't think Carroll would fit this team; he's peaked, he's over the age of players we really should covet, and he's relatively one-dimensional (although he has potential to round out in several other areas). I could imagine him, however, being like what Fred Hoiberg was to the TWolves a couple years back when they were a playoff team (with Cassell-Sprewell-KG). A very good spot-up three point shooter who can be sound defensively and make himself a viable contributor off the bench--so I really think he could be a tad useful in a playoff team. But not this team.

That's my line of thought too. Cuban has openly said they're shooting for a FA gem in 2010 and Salmon's contract eats into their salary in 2010, so much so that they probably could offer only the MLE. Unless Cuban thinks Salmon's expiring is good for a sign-n-trade then this trade doesn't make sense to Dallas.

I would do Beno+filler for Stack. But not right now though.
I would wait till the draft and if we draft PG, then we do this trade. I don't think now is the good time to pull this trade even though I FREAKING LOVE this trade idea.

For Beno for Carroll? I would still do this trade.

I would trade Beno for anything!!

But Stackhouse most likely will not be available by then.

Uhm the trade in question here has nothing to do with Salmons.

Maybe that's why GP wants Bayless in the Salmons deal. Either way, I don't think any PG we draft will come in and be immediately better than Beno. All of them seem to have a weakness. The ones that can scorer don't dish as well, and the ones that can penetrate don't defend. In fact, most don't defend. And, at this point, we don't even know who'll even enter the draft. Plus, just our luck, we trade away our starting PG and get the #1 pick.

By the way, for this mentioned trade, I like both players. Barea has always struck me as a very mentally tough player who tries to impose his will on the game, but because he's a 5'11" skinny guy he can only go so far with it. But still, he's a solid bench player who can score (not exactly a shooter here) and can pass the ball pretty well--I don't think it's a mirage either. I think he has some potential as a good sparkplug off the bench. Obviously if Beno is moved we would need to get a starting point guard (an athletic defensive foil at that), but I have more hope for Barea than for Beno, which is a backhanded way of saying that Beno isn't very good. By the way, if Dallas gets Beno Udrih...man, will they be sorely disappointed. I think he may step up his play putting his mind into it more for a winning team, but some bad habits are hard to get rid of, and I think Beno will carry some of it to them.

I like Bass even more, and I think Dallas is severely underrating him by even putting him on the trading block in an attempt to snatch up some even bigger fish--they should use Josh Howard to fulfill that trade bait role, because now's the time to get maximum trade value out of him before his head kicks in even further. I think I do understand Dallas's side here, because they're essentially a 3 (or even 2) man team on most nights and their famous depth that pushed them deep into the playoffs has all but evaporated--their depth is a mirage because Jason Terry, a guy who should be starting over uberscrub Antoine Wright, is coming off the bench because their bench is just that pitiful. But I remember the days they had Van Exel, Jamison, Stack (a non-washed up version) and Terry coming off the bench with great scoring punch. Because they can't trade any of their big guns, and Stack isn't drawing very good trade offers (apparently), apparently they want to sack Bass in to really replenish this once permanent aspect of their game--the sixth man. True, Bass has limitations (he's not that tall, and he's not a good defender) but a guy that young and that good offensively with some rebounding ability shouldn't even be put on the block. I would be glad to take him, but I think there's some duplication with Jason Thompson here. Still, it definitely gives us good scoring punch off the bench if this trigger is pulled.

Actually, Beno in Dallas just might work out, considering he'd be getting a chance to redeem himself in the eyes of Texans. I'm sure there's still lingering resentment on his part on how he was treated in San Antonio. He'd have a second chance to prove just how wrong they were in kicking him to the curb...
