Detroit signs...

Nancy Lieberman

But a name from their past, 50-year-old former coach Nancy Lieberman, is on her way back -- as a player. The News has learned Lieberman signed on Wednesday and is expected to play at least one game, Saturday, and possibly a second game. An official announcement will come today.
I saw this about an hour and a half ago... and still have no words

[FONT=arial, helvetica, sans-serif]Satchel Paige is considered by many to be one of the greatest, if not the greatest pitchers ever to put on a baseball uniform. At the age of 59 he was called back to the major leagues by the Kansas City Athletics for one last game. He was surprisingly effective in his 4 innings of work to a roaring appreciative crowd who gave standing ovation back in summer of 1965.

Nancy Lieberman is considered by many to be one of the greatest women's basketball players of all time. Now at age 50 she is returning to the court much the way Satchel Paige did as transcendent sports icons. I see nothing wrong with her cameo appearance for a game or two. If she's able to turn back the father time clock like Satchel most certainly did, maybe she has enough in the tank to actually get up and down the court swishing a few hoops for her team. Why not - it's only basketball:)

Satchel Paige didn't have to run back and forth up ninety-four feet.

Unless they figure out a way where she doesn't have to play defense, this can't possibly end well; reminds me of how Barkley is fond of saying "I could come back tomorrow, if they only made me play offense."

Personally, I think this is a brilliant PR move by Laimbeer. It shifts everyone's focus just a little off of the brawl and onto a legend. And whether or not Bill is crazy ;)

That said, I spoke this morning with a friend who played in the WBL with Orrender, Lieberman, Blaze, Meyers, etc., and she said that she is more concerned with how Lieberman will do, and that if she can't keep up, that she will become the butt of joke reels, and she was just too damn good to be reduced to that.

Still, Detroit needs players to cover the expected suspensions, and Lieberman brings a body, and if not good PR, at least a "different" PR, and can fill in as an assistant coach if Mahorn is gone for awhile.

Let's see what the ole' girls got...

Speechless... is the only word runnin through my mind.

Lets hope those games are televised:) hey maybe we all can pick her in the fantasy game, is she considered a rookie?;)

hey, you know..I hadn't thought about that....but since she already played in the league, she I don't think can be a rookie. But we should get triple points anyway for being on the opposite end of the age scale. ;)

signing somebody to replace Ford I could see, but signing somebody to replace people who are suspended seems not possible.

And, if he would have signed Lieberman to replace Powell on the roster since they have been playing without her for a while? And who actually plays the same position as Lieberman and thus fills a need? - I would have not been as disgusted as I am (which is pretty full on disgusted so the "not as" is severely relative.)

Somewhere, Ruthie Bolton must be sitting around muttering..."what on EARTH do I have to do to get a call?"

LMAO!!!:)

Speculation--besides the PR move--is that Bill is just filling space for possible suspended players. League/CBA rules state that a team must have 8 players to compete in a game. If Pierson and Nolan, and any other Detroit player get suspended, with Powell and Ford injured, that only leaves 7 players on Detroit's roster. As Koz said last night on Monarchs Talk, word is that Detroit wants to take all of their hits at once and get them over with.

And Nancy makes eight...come on MBF--give an old bird a chance ;)

I just got home. I was at the game this morning, and did some other errands, and had an early dinner.

This website is the first thing I went to today. I go to this thread, and see that NANCY LIEBERMAN has been signed!

April Fool's Day is long over. Please tell me this is a cruel joke!

Maybe the Sparks can sign her, their point guard situation is bad enough as it is.

Oh, wait...Ruthie in a SPARKS uniform??? I take that back! That's just an ungodly image!

Good thing you took that back, or I'd have to get the soap out for washing out your mouth. :p

Gotta agree with MBF...What about Ruthie? She is in awesome shape!
She is in great shape... and it's fun to think about:D But seriously, we shouldn't want her to get signed even to a 7 day deal. If she became an active player again, wouldn't that require her to start over on the waiting period for the HOF?

Heck, NL is already there, so that doesn't matter to her... after all, she is HallOfFamerNancyLieberman;)

Well, it would have been a better story if she could have come in and played well, but that went about how I expected. She did have a couple of nice passes, though.

I must have seen something that the rest of you didn't on that exchange with Smith, though; it looked to me like Smith's arm slipped out of her hand, and then Smith told her that she could handle it, not like Smith knocked her hand away.

Funny how Peck & company kept saying 50 year old NancyLC....LOL;)

First, the Sparks/Shock brawl.

Secondly, the Shock sign Nancy Lieberman.

Is this getting surreal or what?

Let's see if some team tries to sign Ann Meyers to a playing contract. Maybe the Sparks, so she can be a teammate with that eternal "reigning MVP". :)

You mean to tell me that Liberman who has not played in what.....12 years, can step out on the floor and play, BUT DEMYA NEEDS MORE THAN FIVE WEEKS TO GET INTO GAME SHAPE!!! I don't get that.

Nancy isn't coming off back to back knee injuries and hasn't been basketball idle for a few months. You probably could trot DeMya out there right now and have her look the same as Nanc did. Lieberman to me didn't look to have much speed or quality lateral movement, she was just out there and only contributed when it was half court stuff.
