Some good games so far, but none - IMHO - as good as the just-concluded Colts-Chargers game. Props to the Chargers who lost their leading RB and their QB and STILL stepped up on the road and won. That was impressive.

Great game. Who saw that coming?

Rivers is a complete punk though.

Let me add some props for the Jags. I thought they were tailor made for the Pats, and I was right about their defense, but I never had any clue just how good Garrard had gotten. I was expecting a full on running assault which the Pats handled ok, but Garrard kept them in the whole time. If they get a few decent receivers and keep the rest of the team together they are going to be a force next season. Especially if Dungy bolts Indy and they lose players through free agency/cap issues.

I guess it's all a matter of perspective. I don't have a horse in this race, so I feel more objective about the whole thing. I don't have a problem with him responding to the hostile Colts crowd. He and his team didn't bother talking the talk, they just walked the walk - and they'll be playing next week.

I strongly disagree. Any athlete, pro, college, high school, should NEVER respond in kind to a-hole fans. You can just point to the scoreboard if you want to show them you're ahead, but that's it as far as acknowledging any stupid verbal or flipping-off abuse.

Ron Artest got in trouble at The Palace of Auburn Hill, Michigan not because he was jawing with Ben Wallace who pushed him, but because he (plus Stephen Jackson, etc.) started getting into verbal sparring with fans, escalating into a beer bath and soon all out punching riot in the stands.

I don't have a horse in the race either. The Broncos fan in me has always considered the Chargers more of an annoyance than the immense dislike I have towards the Raiders (and some of their fans). The Pats fan in me was rooting for the Chargers because I think they are the better matchup and because I don't like the Colts.

Rivers hasn't really established himself as a premiere QB and he has been getting into little tiffs with opposing players and now their fans for several weeks now. I don't really like it when any player does that stuff, but as the leader of the team (and usually the public face as well) the QB is always supposed to be above the fray. Its made worse when the guy is perceived as below average for his position, and my friends who are Chargers fans all seem to feel the same way, especially when they gave up Brees who is a class act for a guy who is developing some of the tendencies they saw in Ryan Leaf.

As I type NY goes up early on Dallas... looks like we could have another good game.

So what exactly did Rivers do that was so heinous? I must have missed something...

And there's a big difference between the NBA and NFL in my opinion. For one thing, the fans aren't sitting right in your lap in the NFL. There's no easy way for players to get to fans in the NFL. Had there been a barrier of any substance at the Palace, the brawl would never have occurred.

I don't recall Artest verbally sparring with a fan before the brawl. I remember him sprawling on the end of the scorer's table when the beer cup came flying at him.

If you choose to be incensed, that's your right. I just choose to disagree...

Did rivers do something?

well it was suprising to me...anyone know what injuries LT and rivers had?
Quick sideline shot I saw was with less than a minute to go and a bunch of rowdy Indy fans behind bench were yelling abuse at the Chargers. Maybe Rivers thought he was being singled out as he was the only SD player I saw yelling back at them. Finally, at least one fan gave him the bird and he appeared to do the same. No class all the way around.

I hear what you're saying, pdx. Some people could say something similar about Francisco Garcia getting into the face of Kevin Garnett and Jermaine O'Neal, no?

"Rogers hasn't established himself" and "the guy is perceived as below average" both sound, to me, as though it would be okay if it was coming from someone who had earned the right. I just don't think it's that big a deal. Of course, I didn't think it was that big a deal when Terrell Owens acted like a jerk, either. I think some fans just get a little too sensitive over things that don't really matter that much.

Anyway, I think you're right about the Giants-Cowboys game. As I detest all things Texas - and because my daughter is a Cowboys fan - I'm rooting against the dudes from Dallas. And I think it would be fun for Eli to be able to taunt his brother just a bit.

I love NFL playoffs.

At this young stage of his career Eli has proven to be a better playoff/pressure QB than Peyton was early in his career. I don't think Eli is going to win a Super Bowl anytime soon though. Funny, that the biggest thing standing in each Manning's way has been Drew Bledsoe's unheralded backup quarterback coming in from out of nowhere and turning their respective teams into powerhouses overnight.

Wait...I saw no bird come from Rivers. What I saw was the last seconds of the game ticking down and Rivers basically yelling "scoreboard" to the fans who had been harassing him the whole game. Of course Dierdoff goes off on a rant about the whole thing which will just fuel the fire and make it worse than it really was. Fact is Rivers manned up and played a hell of a game right up to the point he couldn't make it back to the field. I'm sure he had a little adrenaline running through his veins as the final seconds went down.

If he did give the bird than he went too far, but I saw no such thing. Now he gets to lose to the Pats.

I really thought Dallas was gonna pull it out...

Hrm. All things considered, I am declaring myself to be a Chargers fan for next week.

I'd like Pats and Green Bay and a little vengeance for 97.

It would be kind of cool to see Rivers and Baby Manning play for a title given their draft history. As cool as that would be I really don't care for either of them so please, please, please give me Pats and Green Bay :)

I'm sooooooooooooooooooooooo a huge Chargers fan right now.....

I'll take either team in the NFC, I don't rightly care, the substories the media will gag me with up until the Superbowl will be nothing compared to having to see/hear about Jessica Simpson any longer than I have to.

Here's to little brothers everywhere!! Go Eli!

Here's to aging graybeards who found fountain of youth!! Go Favre!

Wow... the biggest surprise yet. TO being gracious in a post game press conference where he didn't get gaudy stats. He's CRYING about his QB right now!

The only disappointment I had is that it seemed like the Colts and the Cowboys were the better teams (especially the Colts in their game) but a few plays here and there changed the outcome.

When I don't have much of a rooting interest I like it when the better teams win.

Gotta disagree about the Colts. They got bailed out by the refs on that INT return at the end of the first half, otherwise the game could have been ugly. They definitely aren't the team that almost beat the Pats half a season ago. Too many rusty players and not enough depth. Could you imagine what Brady would do if he played against the pass rush the Colts brought today? I do hope the Chargers injuries aren't serious even though I will be rooting against them. Always want to play the other team when they're at their best, anything else would feel like backing in at this point.

Very good games today. Watching the Cowboys vs Giants, I really thought the Giants would pull it off. The Cowboys just haven't looked that good the last several games.

However, I was hoping the Giants would have lost. I can't stand Eli Manning ever since draft day. What a baby.

I'll definitely will be rooting for my Pats team even more so because I can't stand Phillip Rivers.

Here's hoping it will be Patriots vs Green Bay with the Pats being the Superbowl Champions.

Their offense was effective all day and if it wasn't for turnovers in Charger territory (including two tipped passes) they'd have had quite a few more points.

Obviously San Diego deserved to win since they made those plays and stopped the Colts from going ahead twice at the end. But generally speaking I thought the Colts were the better team.

Yeah, I really thought the Colts got outplayed. Manning played pretty well for the most part, but it really hurt them not having Harrison anywhere near close to top form.

I thought the Jags played a GREAT game... the Pats were just, well... perfect as usual. They are just a machine. You make one mistake and it's all over.

Pretty crazy to say it, but I think I'm rooting for Favre at this point. :) I was glad to see the Boys get beat -- don't want to see them even competing for a record breaking sixth Super Bowl!

GO CHARGERS!!!! Unfortunately, pretty much all their best players are injured so I don't expect them to win. I like Favre, but the Giants have a real chance of beating the Pats...I don't think the Packers have a chance

The Patriots were, IMHO, very lucky that LaDainian Tomlinson didn't play. If he had, I strongly suspect it would be the Chargers going on and not New England.

I tip my hat to the Chargers, an excellent defensive game plan. The score was what I was expecting but the game played out much differently. San Diego's other RBs are no slouches and NE stuffed them pretty well so I don't think LdT's absence was the difference maker, but if Rivers had been 100% they probably could have pulled it off.

I'm glad the Super Bowl should be played in better weather and Brady should be back on.

Hoping Green Bay wins today, for various reasons a win over Green Bay (97' Super Bowl and adding another division winner and top team to their overall record) will be infinitely more satisfying than a rematch with New York who despite playing tough a few weeks ago probably wouldn't stand a chance in a warm weather game.

Yeah, Sproles and Turner are good but they're not LT. The guy is the best RB in the league and we've seen what other RBs have done to the Pats(McGahee for example).

Also they got lucky that Gates and Rivers were hurt. If those 2 are 100% the Pats could've lost as well. If SD's big 3 is 100% the Chargers probably win the game.

edit: Oh and Plaxico Burress just made a sick catch in the Giants/Packers game. Probably my favorite WR in the NFL.

All reports I have read indicate that Tomlinson pulled himself out of today's game. The biggest game of his career. While he had teammates risking their careers to deliver a win today he sulked on the bench covered up by his visor and parka. In my book that cost him any claim he may have had as the best RB in the league. Great players play great in the great games. LdT has shown himself to be a stellar regular season performer but as usual he came up short in the playoffs when the season was on the line.
