SAN ANTONIO -- While laying on the trainer's table waiting for treatment, Monarchs veteran Yolanda Griffith said there is no need to sound the alarms about Saturday's embarrassing loss.
"We aren't pushing the panic button," said Griffith, who scored six points and grabbed two rebounds. "We're OK. We're all right."
With a practice scheduled for this morning, the Monarchs have time to prepare for Monday's third and deciding game. Griffith said the strategy won't be any different, but the team will need to come out strong.
"They didn't do anything different," Griffith said. "It's only on us."
Top notch -- The Silver Stars' bench production improved dramatically from Game 1. After getting just six points from its reserves Thursday, San Antonio's bench scored 38 points Saturday.
Marie Ferdinand-Harris led the effort with 17 pointson 7-of-10 shooting. She scored three points Thursday.
Silver Stars point guard Becky Hammon credited hard work for Ferdinand-Harris' success off the bench this season.
"Every day at the gym, she kept working even though she wasn't getting a lot of time," Hammon said. "I admire her integrity. She never complained once. She came out to play at the right time."
The Monarchs' bench scored 31 points Saturday. Kristin Haynie was the biggest contributor, scoring 13 of her 15 points in the fourth quarter.
Big time -- Coach Dan Hughes said he was pleased with the excitement of the first Silver Stars playoff game in San Antonio.
The Silver Stars relocated in 2003 to the Alamo City from Utah, where the team was called the Starzz. While in Utah, the Starzz made their first playoff appearance in 2001 but lost the series 2-0 to the Monarchs.
"Driving down here, I passed one of those signs for tickets and I saw 'Silver Stars' flash on the sign, and that's a good day," Hughes said. "It shows people want good seats to the game, and that's a good day for San Antonio. People here understand, and we are capitalizing on this moment. It's a start for us to build credibility."
Many seats went unsold, however. There was an announced crowd of 5,735 for an arena that seats 18,797.
