Greg Oden in purple?

#1
Greg Oden (Ohio State) is almost a sure #1 pick in the 2007 NBA draft. He may or may not be another David Robinson, but it's probably not a stretch to say that 30 out of 30 GMs would take him first if they had the chance.

Now, you're probably thinking that the Kings have no chance, right? Well that's certainly true, unless one of two things happens:
a) We continue to play like we have for the past ten games or so (not likely) or
b) We trade for a first round pick with one of the teams likely to have the worst record this season. Philadelphia & Charlotte are my guesses (since Memphis has Gasol back and are already on the rise).

Food for thought.

Such a trade (Philadelphia or Charlotte) would also likely dip us into the lottery with our own high lottery pick; the result being that we would get two good picks next year. I assure you that I don't want to become a perennial lottery team (again). Been there, done that. Just looking for a chance to have something special without having to hit rock bottom and stay there.

So what you're saying is that Philadelphia and Charlotte has a chance to get Oden. And they're going to trade their pick why?

Because they really want Pot's expiring.

That and I hear he'd gladly don O-tags purple briefs for a chance at some PT. ;)

the kings will be in the running for greg oden sweepstakes, so we can be excited about that.

here's the thing: as bad as the kings have been playing, they're only 3 games under .500. unless musselman is completely incompetent, chances are that this team will start to put things together toward midseason. they don't have enough talent to break into the race for decent playoff positioning, but they will likely be competing for the 8th seed. and, of course, middling teams who finish 8th don't get the kinds of draft picks that put them among those in the running for greg oden, or any of the other talented prospective big men in the 2007 draft, for that matter. it'll likely be just another mediocre season from a mediocre team with little to show for it by the start of the '07-'08 season...

its bleak, i know...

And then we go sign a swingman. I love this team!

Chances of getting Oden... 0.000000000000000000000001%

The only way we can get Oden

If Slamson goes over and chloroforms Billy King.

King then passes out and Geoff sneaks over and proposes and signs and trade that has Pota headed to Philly for a first round draft pick.

THEN sends the paperwork to Stern with a picture of him and King with sunglasses on and two thumbs up.

And then uses a Neuralyzer MIB style and convinces King that Pota is the next Shaq.

AND THEN somehow protect King from the Philly rioters from completing a coup.

And then hope Philly stinks as bad as we all think they will.

That is honestly the most likely scenario we got.

The problem with where we are right now is we will more that likely miss the playoff and be in the 11 to 14 range in terms of what pick we get. The player we select will not have the immediate impact we need to right this sinking ship. The drastic improvement we all are looking for will not be made in this years draft. I read an article a few days ago where one of the players was quoted as saying they have officially "hit rock bottom", but sadly, I believe this team is still in a free fall heading towards the ground where "rock bottom" can't even be seen from this point. I believe in the coming months and years, we will see a rash of "Kings fans" on crouches nursing sprained ankles and swollen knees from jumping off the bandwagon while our teams dwindles in mediocrity re-loading for another run.

Don't you guys know we're rebuilding on the fly? We are going to be the first team in the history of the NBA to completely rebuild without having a losing season.

hahahah we're gonna have a least 1 losing year and maybe next. I prefer 2 so we get better draft picks but i'm not sure everyone else agrees.

We're only like what, 5-6 losses behind philly, there's still plenty of time to gel and make up that difference and get the #1 pick. Hey it could happen, why not us!

Besides, I heard there's some other good players in this draft, its not all about Oden.

the kings need to trade away miller and bibby to get a better chance a higher pick this upcoming draft. if we get in the top 10, we're sure to get a decent big. if we convince a lottery team to take either and give us a pick that would be even better :D cmon maloofs! you like to gamble! here comes the lottery~

What a sense of humor you guys have! Collectively what I'm hearing is...
'We're not worthy! We're not worthy!'
I guess that's to be expected when your team is in the middle of a freefall.
But consider this: We're not that far from where Philadelphia & Charlotte are now. And neither of them have a lock on getting the #1 choice. And there are several other teams that could slide into last place with an injury to a key player.

That's not the only way we could get Oden, but you're probably right that it's the most likely way.

I don't want to think about Oden, but I do hope we are bad enough to miss the playoffs and at least have a chance at a top 3 pick. Even a top 10 pick would do us great.

Thats really not that far off. I expect Kings to make the playoffs. They will start to click. They have been losing to good teams and beating the bad teams and mediocre teams like themselves. Unfortunately, there have been way too many good teams in the schedule lately.

It perplexes me how people are convinced that we would have no shot at Oden. People say that, if we fell just short of the playoffs, then there's no way that we'd win the lottery... And they say that as if the worst team in the league always wins the lottery. And they don't.

Only four times in the history of the lottery has the worst team in the league actually won the lottery: Clippers in '88, Nets in '90, Cavs in '03 (although, technically they were tied with Denver, so you could make the case that Denver was actually the worst team that year), and Orlando in '04. The worst team in the league almost never wins the lottery; hell, in 1993, the Magic had a 41-win season, missed the playoffs on a tiebreak, and still won the lottery. Having the worst record isn't a guarantee that you'll win, and not having the worst record certainly isn't a guarantee that you won't.

That said, there's no way we'll get Oden; we're cursed. This is the same team that once had four first round draft picks, and somehow came out of that draft without any talent. We went into the 1990 Draft (admittedly not the deepest draft in history) with a total of five picks, and managed to come away empty-handed, all while somehow managing to draft around Tyrone Hill, Jayson Williams, Dee Brown, Toni Kukoc, Antonio Davis, and Cedric Ceballos.

I agree with Slim. We don't have to have the worst record in the NBA to get Oden, but it would help.

But it doesn't matter whether we win it or not. If we can get a top 5 pick, we can land a Brandan Wright, Al Horford, or Thaddeus Young, all potential franchise bigs.

I'm particularly high on Wright after some of his performances for UNC this year. He's only 19 too.
