Owens had mind on birthday party

IRVING, Texas (AP) - When Bill Parcells told the Dallas Cowboys what it takes to win a championship, Terrell Owens wasn't listening.

"The championship speech? I must have went to sleep on that one," T.O. said, laughing.

Parcells gave his speech Monday, a day after a pivotal win in New York and hours before Owens flew to Los Angeles for an ostentatious 33rd birthday party he threw himself. All sorts of Hollywood types showed up and the Maloof family, owners of the Sacramento Kings, gave him a diamond-crammed watch worth nearly $50,000.

Back in the locker room Wednesday, Owens insisted he didn't recall Parcells' words of wisdom about the things the Cowboys (8-4) need to do down the stretch as they try to win their division for the first time since 1998.

"I can't remember. I had my mind on the party," he said when asked a second time about Monday's speech. "I have no earthly idea of what you are possibly talking about. I don't remember. I was already in L.A. ... He'll have to redo it."

Things have been pretty quiet on the T.O. front since Parcells changed quarterbacks, dumping Drew Bledsoe for Tony Romo. The Cowboys are 5-1 since, with four straight wins, and Owens' numbers have shot up, too.

Yet Owens always seems to be a story waiting to happen.

Last week, it was criticizing the team's decision to cut kicker Mike Vanderjagt. Now, even if he's only pretending to have tuned out Parcells, Owens comes across as ignoring what could be his coach's most important advice of the season.

At least T.O. shares his coach's sentiment that the Cowboys are a Super Bowl contender.

"I think he has every reason to really kind of speak positively because there are some positive things that have been happening here the last few weeks," he said. "Early in the year, we knew we had a good team, we just weren't playing four quarters. Obviously there were some inconsistencies with our play. Now we're jelling. ...

"We've put ourselves in a position to really make a push for this thing, get home-field advantage and maybe a first-round bye. We know we have a good team here. We're just looking forward to finishing the season strong, then starting a new season in the playoffs."

Owens flew to Los Angeles on a private jet Monday afternoon, accompanied by three teammates, all defensive players: linebackers Akin Ayodele and Kevin Burnett, and safety Abram ElamFellow receiver Sam Hurd was supposed to join them, but made a rookie mistake by being unreachable.

"Just from some of the feedback from my friends and some of the guys who went to the party, they definitely told me they enjoyed themselves," said Owens, whose actual birthday is Thursday. "Overall, it was a good time."

Owens rated this his best party yet. He also called the watch from the Maloofs "definitely, by far, the best gift I've ever received."

"I think it's about 6 1/2 carats. It's definitely an eye-catcher," he said. "I started to wear it today in practice, but, you know, I didn't want to blind anyone."

Parcells, by the way, said he wasn't invited to the bash.

"I didn't think he was going to make it," Owens explained. "I gave the invites to the guys I thought maybe might make the trip."

T.O. and the media have a very, very sick relationship with each other. It makes me want to vomit.

Why did the Maloofs have to get involved? Just a word of advice, in order to improve your image with the public do not hang out with the biggest brat in all of sports. I love them as owners, but they prove themselves to be very politically challenged.

Why did the Maloofs have to get involved? The Maloof brothers are friends of TO's.

When you are in the public eye you should be careful with whom you associate. They are not gaining popularity votes by giving the biggest brat in sports a very expensive watch.

Sorry, but I don't think them giving a birthday present to TO is going to do that much damage to their public reputation.

The Maloofs have a right to live their lives. If people want to look at everything they do under a microscope, they're always going to find something to complain about.

Sorry, kupman, but this is taking nitpicking to a new low, IMHO.

Well, it is nitpicking, but understand that I am not the one nitpicking here per se. I am pro-arena (even pro public funding) and pro-Maloof. However, this type of thing just feeds the 'anti' crowd.....i.e. 'why should we subsidize billionaires who give extravagant gifts to millionaire sports brats?' They are the ones who would love to nitpick at this just as the used the Carl JR. commercial to their favor.

Please, do not feed the animals.

At some point, people in the public eye have to decide whether or not they're going to second-guess every single move they make. The Maloofs are not going to allow a few nay-sayers influence how they live their lives. I may not agree with everything they do - and I might not have made the same choices they have made - but I applaud their decision NOT to be controlled by things they cannot change anyway.

Why should they change how they treat a friend because someone it might be interpreted poorly by a few people who don't like them anyway?

As far as the "anti" crowd goes, I haven't seen any comments from them. I honestly think this is a true tempest in a teapot. The article was about Owens, with a minor mention of a gift he received from some friends.

I can see what you're saying; I just don't believe it's going to have anywhere near the negative impact you seem to think it will.

:)

One bit of clarification: The actual impact of the Carls Jr. ad on voters was negligible. It really didn't change minds. People who thought it was outrageous and showed the Maloofs in a poor light were pretty much going to vote against Q & R already...

Peace.

Maloofs have given enough to the comunity as is. They are rich and they can spend their money however they want.

Now if they spent that much money on Charles Barkley or on Bill Walton I would have had a problem with it :)

Bill Walton scares me...a whole lot. :lol

TO is behaving since this is year 1. Romo and Tuna don't get thrown under the bus till year 2.
