[Game] 52/82: Pelicans @ Kings 08 FEB 2025, 7pm PT/10pm ET

Fun, fun game. Unless it's a violation of the CBA or something, I'd very much like to see Murray and Rave play together. Add Val and you could have a smash-mouth front court for some stints on the floor. Sabonis's dive to the floor for the loose ball was a decisive play in the game, no doubt. But my favorite play of the game was a crushing screen by Val delivered on a hand-off to Lavine, who then parted the Red Sea on his drive to the basket. More, please.

They had to win this game for justice to be served. The crap that Zion gets away with is unbelievable. I guess assault and battery is legal wherever he goes.

Christie did an excellent job with his rotations in the 4th. Considering the Kings are still in a "meet and greet" phase, the performance of the Kings in this game was excellent.

Doug did not complain about Monk at all. Monk wanted to get in but DeRozan hit a bucket and so he was held at the table for a couple of min. I think they understand that they have to go with what's working on the floor at that time.
no he didn’t complain about Monk. He said Monk was initially cool with letting Keon ride but then that went on for longer than Monk expected. He said sometimes guys are going to get upset with him but the most important thing is winning. Again, not a big deal and you want guys competitive. I would imagine the analytic side of the organization has shown the staff the clear data on this. It’s Doug and crews job to make that work and tonight was maybe his best coaching job to date.

Well, if the Kings have some smart defenders, Zion wouldn't be able to drive to the basket at will. If the Kings have players with some balls, they would have anticipate his drive and took some charges but most Kings players lack balls or defensive skills. A player like Zion know just one way to play the game, which is drive to the basket at will...but if you learn to anticipate and take charge, it shouldn't be hard to make him pay for it.

I wonder what the Pels plan is for the rest of the year. Are they planning on playing Bruce Brown and Kelly 0? They have zero chance to make the playoffs. Should they just keep riding with some of the young guys? If they play those vets they are going to start getting Lins

Lol

"Yeah guys, it's not that hard to stop one of the best offensive players in the NBA. Just do it!"

At first, i think he was hesitant because of maybe some of the bad rep he gets for being just a scorer or selfish, even though i don’t think he is. Some guys walk on eggshells when they’re worried about a potential narrative IMO - but it’s good to see him shaking whatever that was right off.
I’ve got to believe his three ball will start falling for him. Maybe not to his 44% avg for the season since he‘s probably not comfortable enough to get the same looks, but you can’t tell me he goes from one of the best in the league to can’t make a three, right? I mean I totally couldn’t expect that to happen to a player coming to the kings. No way they would just inexplicably stop having the ability to hit a 3 point shot. Just because they got traded to the kings. No way….right?

Really great LaVine presser going on right now.

-Talks about how the 1st unit came out flat early, unacceptable. Made it a case to start the 3rd Q, set the standard
-Says all he cares about is building cohesion and winning games. Doesn't care about getting to his averages "I've done this long enough"
-Them in transition is a strength right now while they learn how to play with each other. Need to find a way to continue to push the pace
-Keon has some of the best hands in the NBA, gets a ton of deflections and steals. His shooting doesn't get talked about enough

Smart dude. Like him a lot, seems like a real leader type.
No shade at Fox, but LeVine is already proving to be twice the leader he ever was.

Yep. And in a 1 game turn-around, he kept our best defender on the floor in crunch time, vs a guard who was absolutely scorching us. Immediately learned his lesson from the game in POR. Seen enough now to where Keon+Keegan just gives you at the very least an above average defensive unit on the floor.
Yeah Keon’s +/- is among the leaders every damn game. Proved with that pick 2 in the 4th. Monk, Zach and Deebo are all similar players though Zach looked better defensively but not a Keon’s level.

Keon has to be on the floor 30+ minutes

And here's the thing, Keon helps those guys offensively too with his spacing and just be the sheer nature of not needing the ball to be effective. One less cook in the kitchen.

Thought Christie did incredibly well finding that balancing act tonight. It'd be easier to stagger them if you just start Keon, but baby steps at this point

I agree. He especially helps Keegan by removing some defensive pressure and opening up space and touches.

I think I’m the jinx.

While I didn’t want to see it actually happen, I did recently mention the possibility of this happening. Over 40 years of watching this franchise in Sacramento now, I’ve seen lots of odd transformations once a player puts on a KINGS uniform and once they leave. To the point of being able to predict what is likely to happen.

It’s a bit like Groundhog Day for me. I’ve just seen this movie far too many times.
