Jonas Valanciunas - KING

Zach Harper at The Athletic is confused why we did this. (Link)

Goes on to suggest several options, including that we were playing keep-Jonas-away-from-the-Lakers. Even so, gives the trade a B. But the "I haven't watched a Kings game since 2004" vibe is pretty strong here.
Too few assets in the NBA to acquire somebody strictly so they aren’t picked up by a rival.

But Jonas plays the Kings so well it’s as good a reason as any lol

The obvious reason is that they don’t have a backup big and they are dead last in the NBA in bench scoring. Just a cursory review of the Kings roster on ESPN.com and a look at their bench stats would’ve saved that guy some embarrassment

I would love to see someone who can defend but I get we needed scoring off the bench and less Domas minutes. We may have to score 150 to win a game.

Jonas is 32 and about to turn 33. Do I want to give up 2 seconds and a young wing prospect for a 2 year rental on an old defensively challenged big?
Wait let me get this straight you were against this specific trade with these specific players? I just want to get you on record. Yes or no would you have done this exact trade if it was presented to you and you were GM.

Yes, because he’s a starting quality center on a good contract and directly addresses a weakness you have, and you didn’t give up anyone in your rotation to get him.

Not very good
JVal was eating but Domas odd man , team looked better when one of them sat.To be fair that was before Domas was considered as capable 3 point shooter
I don't see them spending much time together except for against certain big lineups. Otherwise, I think the hope would be we get 15 min out of JV so we can get Domas' minutes down.

Yeah, I'm not expecting it to be like a normal set or anything, but I figure you might be able to test the waters there from time to time. Especially with higher quality players around them here than with the national team. Jval's not a great shooter, but he can actually do it, which matters

I feel like part of it was that Lithuania had pretty much no NBA level talent on its team aside from those two when they were playing them together. It’ll be interesting to see how they look now with Matas and Kasparas as lottery pick level talents in consecutive years.

Nope. Like I said I don’t have a clear alternative but a B is likely a fair grade. My real answer is more why did we release Nemi?
The Nemi question is one I had at the time too. I theorized it was a favor to Brown to get one of "his guys" in Javale on the team. But we spent 2 years developing him in the G-League, he became one of the best players in the G-League and he's just gone?

Haven't really kept up on how he's playing in BOS though. He had some real rebounding concerns here.

Probably a better option than asking DeMar to guard Julius Randle again.

I now forgive him for that cheap shot on Metu
But that is also part of what the Kings needed: a legit physical presence that would cross the line when necessary. JV can be a thug, lets not mince words, but this team needs a little more backbone. I for one cherish the idea of watching him play against Dramon for a bit.

Call me a hater but if you thought Len looked slow and immobile on defense, just watch Valanciunus ... As I've said I don't think a post up big guy is what the Kings need off the bench, considering their offense runs through DeRozan when bench is in. Pretty much the whole team thrives in a running style too, so how Valanciunus fits at a higher pace is extremely questionable. Kings don't need more scoring; they literally have (4) 20 point scorers already. We'll see how it all fits
JVal is definitely slow, to make him most effective in his 15-18 minutes Kings would probably should things down, otherwise his biggest advantages ( pick and roll, offensive rebounding, back to the basket game) will not be taken advantage off.maybe Doug will change his substitution patern with Zach on a team.
