Welcome Coach Doug Christie!

I know this wasn't the way you would have liked to get your first head coaching gig, but here we are.

We're hoping that you bring the same attributes as a player to being a head coach. Let's hope your cerebral, intensity and fiery competitiveness rubs off on the team and your are able to maximize this team's talents. Someone needs to light a fire under these players!!!

Let's start off on the right foot by beating the hated Lakers tonight!!! :)

No,no,no this is not the way. Promoting Doug is promoting someone who is not ready to be a coach. It’s another Walton situation.
If JJ Reddick can go from hosting a podcast to coaching the Lakers, Doug Christie can go from being a front of the bench assistant over the last five seasons to a head coach (he even has a little experience in that role from the COVID season).

Why was he 4th in line? What kind of message does that send to the other assistants? Vivek is pulling the strings and he's done a marvelous job over the years

Huh? Who exactly did he “cut” to get the job? Jay Triano (who is very old and for all we know didn’t want to jump on the interim grenade for the third time in his career.)? Luke Loucks (young, inexperienced, probably got Mike Brown fired by not being very good at coaching up the defense)? A random third person that you claim is in front of DC in the pecking order but who I don’t think actually exists?

I jumped the gun. Sorry, I'm just bitter after everything that has happened. I didn't think Brown was the main issue. The front office didn't give him the pieces to compete and I think Vivek is a joke. He's willing to eat 30 million but we can't add depth. Why would a coach or free agent want to come here? Listen to Mike Malone on the Brown firing.

First act as head coach down in LA…find Rick Fox, uppercut.

But seriously, please do well. Mark Jackson will be the end of my fandom.
For real.

Hopefully GS has another sparkly assistant for Vivek to get fixated on. Mark "hookers and Jesus" Jackson would be rough to get excited about.

Anyways, good luck to Doug!

He was always one of my favorite players during the Golden Era, between that and me not being ready to get all "lin" happy again, I'm rooting for him!

The same Malone on his own chopping block? Malone was actually speaking about his own treatment by proxy. Malone's been dangling himself for over a season now and his seat was really hot earlier in the year.

Rick Carlisle and Mike Malone both being the most vocal guys about this firing probably a big indicator of how hot their seats are getting.

Jokic could not be carrying that organization any more than he has been since they won the title. The Nuggets ORtg is 25 points worse, with him off the floor this season. They were 16 points worse with him off the floor last season and 25 points worse with him off in the playoffs. Malone's coaching resume looks a lot different if he's not gifted one of greatest players ever.

I think he's speaking on process. I thought Malone was a good and Brown was

Malone was a good coach as was Mike Brown,. you know the guy that was Coach of the Year two years ago. The guy that they signed to an extension during the summer. No one can talk me out if my belief that Vivek is terrible owner at this point. I hope I'm wrong, I've been a life long Kings fan. What reputable coach would want to work for Vivek?

Both things could be true. Look, last time Brown won COY he lasted about as long. Brown did well, much better coach than any other one the Kings have had but he was both feet out the door for most coaching gigs. Both sides should be thanking each other perhaps. It took Brown a looong time to earn a coaching chair again. Maybe perhaps letting him go this way was the far better option rather than watching it meltdown in slow motion. Now maybe he'll be back on the legit hire list that he wasn't on for a number of years.

Considering what a hot mess the team was, I think the better move was to promote someone who was NOT the lead assistant to this hot mess.

I think Doug has the most upside of the assistant coaches to try and turn this thing around. IMO, he’s the assistant coach that gives Kings the best chance for a fresh re-start.

Post-game comments from the new coach:

“First thing, we have enough,” Christie said after the loss. “And this is a message I said to them."

“There’s enough in this locker room, but how we get over that are the things I talked about since I’ve been up here. The consistency, the focus, the willingness to play for my teammate at such a high level that it hurts so bad that I need to come out of the game."

“Like, that’s more than anything. There’s enough in that locker room to win ball games, and it’s up to us, it’s up to me, to be able to find that. They are the best in the world. I’m trying to put them in positions to make them shine, and that is a big difference from being an assistant coach.”

“But I’m here for the challenge, and I appreciate them for giving me everything they got,” Christie added. “But that pain that it takes, we’re going to need it again. And again. And again."

“Every time. There’s no wiggle room with that one. And that’s probably the grace period you’re talking about, but I don’t accept grace periods. I expect to win every time we step out on the ball floor because there’s enough in that locker room to make it happen.”

Christie’s comments seem to lend some credence to the post I made in the “When Do We Blow It Up?” thread (quoting my post below for reference)…

In all reality, I don’t see us trading Fox soon.

We just fired Brown. That sends the message that they think our performance is a coaching problem and that the roster construction & talent is fine (but obviously underperforming).

Also, I think the fact that they chose Christie as the interim head coach over Triano and Loucks is telling. Triano and Loucks are currently in control of the offense and defense. Having one of them take over for Brown would likely just be more of the same and not much of a change. Having Christie take over tells me that they wanted a more significant shakeup from the current coaching philosophy, strategy, etc. (again, likely because they think the underperformance is due to coaching vs. roster construction/talent).

Behind the scenes, I’m assuming Monte is recommitting to Fox and telling him that they are prioritizing coaching & roster improvements around him, that they see him as a super star talent that can lead us to the promise land, etc.

If I had to bet, I’d put my money on Fox being on this team after the trade deadline AND a trade being made to help this team win now.
The message that “we have enough” coincides with making Brown the scapegoat.

to be fair, “we have enough” is most likely coach speak. He has to work with what he has and probably isn’t going to publicly ask for talent upgrades.

It very well could be but that didn’t seem to be the tone previously, and we all can recognize the glaring weakness with the roster.
yeh we are in a tough spot right now. Will Vivek let Monte make trades? Will he let him pick the coach whether that’s committing to Doug or signing someone else? Will he let him draft if we have our pick?

I personally think Monte is a really good talent evaluator. Either let him make the trades we need or fire him and get the next guy in. If their is a next guy they are going need time to evaluate draft prospects and then make a decision on a coach. If we keep Monte, I don’t think Doug is the right fit. He needs an offense first coach probably since that’s his bag. Memphis assistant or Spurs interim are the guys
