No Kings in All Star game

#91
As a former T-Wolves fan, it pains me that KAT was selected.

There is a reason Jimmy didn’t want to play with him and was able to beat him and Wiggins in a practice scrimmage with the 3rd stringers.

There is a reason his team lost when he scored 60+ points and his coach alluded to him playing for stats vs playing to win.

T-Wolves fans are used to him stuffing the stat sheet with empty points while putting in zero hustle or effort on defense.

KAT is soft and he plays for himself.

It is a shame for him to make it over Sabonis.

I never watch it, but if it means something to Fox and Sabonis then sorry for the snub.
Am I mistaken or has the city of Sacramento never had an all star weekend? Nearly forty years now and only thirty teams.
The closest Sacramento has ever come to hosting All-Star Weekend was when the carpetbagging-assed Maloofs "hosted" All-Star Weekend in Las Vegas.

As a franchise, the Kings/Royals have hosted the All-Star Game twice: 1956 (Rochester) and 1966 (Cincinnati).

Keep in mind that majority of the nearly 40 years that the Kings have been in Sacramento were spent playing inside of an old, and rather small, barn. While it would've been fun to see one in there, realistically speaking, it was never going to ever happen.

Typically the NBA has made sure that cities that build new venues will get to host an All-Star Game in their new digs shortly after they open, but the current excuse for us appears to be that Sacramento does not have the requisite hotel inventory to host All Star Weekend. A super-cursory Google search suggests that Sacramento has about 150% as many hotel rooms as Salt Lake City, which hosted last year, but who knows? Maybe SLC's hotels are swankier or closer to the arena or they aren't in Sacramento or some such.

Interesting to remember that as recently as 2007 the All Star Game was hosted at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas. As a many-time Summer League attendee I've spent a lot of time in T&M, and the one thing I know is that the place is a dump. Like "made ARCO look nice" level of dump. I mean, hey, it's fine for what it is - hosting Summer League and a mid-major college program - but an NBA All-Star Game? Sure, I guess, but then don't turn around and tell other franchises that they don't get to host because their facility isn't up to par (which, to my recollection, was the NBA's excuse for avoiding Sacramento before G1C was built and they needed a different one).

And now the excuse is our airport sucks and we don't have modern hotels.

Why can't ... hear me out ... the game be for the local fans plus a gaggle of celebrities? Getting celebrities from LA and the Bay to Sac should be no problem.

I wouldn't trade Sabonis for either KAT or Davis. Do you know what they both do when they have to play against Sabonis? Run! It's obvious in their body language that they hate playing against Sabonis. If you like superficial veneer over substance then feel free to take KAT and Davis over Sabonis. Stupid, stupid non-selection by whomever picks the All Star team.
“superficial veneer over substance“ describes the all-star weekend to perfection

I'm already over the All-Star thing. We have 7 games left before the All-Star break, including 2 against Denver. Let's win them all and go into the break within spitting distance of a top 4 seed. Even if Fox and/or Sabonis get in there, nobody is going to let them shoot the ball more than a handful of times anyway with 9 guys on that Western Conference team who all think they're going to score 80 and be the star of stars. We've got bigger things to focus on.

Mike Brown had a few choice words on the subject. Sactown Sports writes:

<It doesn’t make sense how Sabonis isn’t an All-Star. Not much else to say about it. Mike Brown said it best pregame when asked about his two star talents being snubbed from the All-Star game:

“We’re the only team in the top six in either league without any All-Stars. I’m not that good of a freaking coach. I got players.”>

Wasn’t a huge NBA/pro sports fan (more of a college sports fan) but have always loved basketball and casually cheered on all MN Pro teams. The Wolves organization has self-sabotaged for so many years it was hard to get to into it. Felt like Jimmy rejuvenated the energy from fans and brought passion and a winning mentality to the organization after watching KAT pad stats and play losing basketball while collecting a huge paycheck.

They had a choice between Jimmy or KAT and Wiggins. They chose KAT and it was a mistake. You can’t build a winning team around him as your centerpiece.

The whole KAT situation has left a sour taste in my mouth towards the Wolves org. Feels like MN bball fans have been waiting for a reason to cheer for this org and the wolves screwed it up.

However, I love Ant and he has definitely brought excitement to the fanbase here. That guy can ball and the Wolves are very lucky to have him.

Keegan getting drafted gave me a reason to get into the NBA and now I’ve become a Kings fan—it is super easy to cheer for all of the players, coaches, I like the media like Deuce and Mo, Matt Barnes, etc.

Now I find myself watching the NBA any chance I get even if the kings aren’t playing.

Davis has been really good this year, and healthy too. He's an elite rebounder and shot blocker that scores. (Plus he's on the Lakers, and let's be honest, that must be factored in) KAT is putting up 22/8 this year and averaging under 1 steal and 1 block per game. He isn't elite at anything other than outside shooting for a big man. He only got in because of the teams record. Sabonis is elite at passing and rebounding, and is on a team with a winning record. That's some bull that KAT got in over him. Like Slim said, if the Twolves needed two players, it should have been Gobert over KAT. Oh well, I guess Sabonis will just start averaging over 10ast a game once Keegan gets even better, and then maybe he will get an All Star selection
my guess is Sabonis is hurt by defense and lack of rim protection. Those who weigh that highly are not voting for Sabonis as an all star no matter what his offensive production is.

I’ve never heard or read anything about the airport. Just the hotel capacity within a certain range of the arena.

With the major upgrade to terminal B about a dozen years ago, I wouldn’t suspect the airport to be an issue anymore, if it ever was.

Regardless, the NBA should be embarrassed by their all-star event, not only how awful it has become, but everything leading up to it — such as how the host site is selected and more importantly how the players are determined.

It’s all a sad joke. A mickey mouse event.

Answer this question: Which player leads the NBA in rebounds per game and defensive rebounds per game?
Sure but the anti Sabonis crowd will argue it’s because he never attempts to protect the rim and is out of position for the rebound.

Look I’m not a Sabonis hater but I know NBA people who don’t like his game at all and feel you can’t win in the play-offs with him. He has very polarizing set of opinions about him. Personally I hope the Sabonis haters are proven wrong but so far they have been right.

I've heard complaints about the airport maybe the terminal upgrades alleviate some of the experience concerns but there is often an expectation that you can reliably transit from arena to hotel to airport even though the people that make those demands wouldn't be caught dead on public transit.

I just think any time a city pitches in to build a new arena for it's NBA franchise they should get the ASG. Like that should be the deal. Within 5 years. It's been almost 10, they owe us. Stern probably would have made it happen but we're stuck with POS Silver who is beholden to just about every other group under the sun before fans.
