This makes more sense to me - trading one rental for another.
If the Kings were pushing it, it makes a limited amount of sense. I don't actually see how it makes sense for anyone, including Monk (who would lose his early-Bird status with the Kings and theoretically the Raptors can outbid us on him next year either way.

Masai is an odd-duck. I think Indy has the right pieces to get it done but are they willing.

It makes sense in that both parties to a prospective deal take the same risk - will he or won't he sign with the acquiring party? It could make sense from the Kings standpoint because typically lengthy forwards are harder to acquire than a sixth-man guard, and because the Kings are in dire need of such length. It would be a lot more palatable to me if I knew the Kings had someone that could come close to taking Monk's place, say a Colby Jones. However, the Kings haven't exactly rushed Colby into the lineup to get him more experience so we are just left with more questions about Monk's possible replacement.

@iowamcnabb mentioned it earlier, but I’m still thinking a trade like this would be the best path to take.
  • Caruso or Thybulle would slot in quite nicely as our starting SG and give us an elite defender while Grant would also give us an upgrade defensively at PF.
  • Caruso/Thybulle, Murray, and Grant are all above average rim protectors for their position (which would come in handy around Sabonis).
  • You’d still have good spacing around Fox/Sabonis as Caruso/Thybulle, Murray, and Grant can all knock down 3s at a solid clip.
  • Grant gives them another legitimate go-to scorer to help lessen the load for our other options. And it technically gives us a solid go-to scorer at every position to take advantage of matchups (PG - Fox, SG - Monk, SF - Murray, PF - Grant, C - Sabonis)
  • Allows us to finish the game with more offense/shooting (Monk) or more defense (Thybulle/Caruso) depending on the situation.

Regarding the debate of Thybulle vs. Caruso…
  • Thybulle is a few years younger (more in line with our timeline), is much longer than Caruso (helping improve our below average length), and is probably a better lockdown, one-on-one defender.
  • Caruso is a more reliable shooter, better rebounder, better ball handler, and better passer

I go back and forth on which one I’d prefer. I’m leaning towards Caruso at the moment…
  • He seems to have that infectious energy that would really help us avoid games like yesterday.
  • A perimeter of Thybulle, Murray, and Grant is a bit light on ballhandling and passing. Could see it stall out without another ball handler/passer out there to keep the ball moving around.
  • Grant has not been a good rebounder this far in his career. Thybulle is also below average for his position. Caruso’s rebounding would help offset Grant’s weakness a bit
  • If Thybulle’s 3PT shooting reverts back to his career average (.343), our spacing could be impacted. While if Caruso’s 3PT shooting reverts back to his career average (.375), we’d be able to manage.
Great comparison. I think I would easily pick Caruso. At this point in time, I don’t think age makes a big difference anymore. I think we just need players who can play today.

However, the Bulls have already put out the message that they are not trading Caruso. He means a lot to their team and provides stability/leadership they want despite their lack of championship aspirations.

We’re not getting Caruso unless we trade away at least a 1st round pick plus more. A bunch of other playoff teams also wouldn’t hesitate to put up a 1st for Caruso. My guess is that if Chicago decides to trade him, they’d be looking for a young prospect + 1st rounder.

From a "hey you match our risk we match yours" it sounds great but I'd argue moving Monk is like making a parlay bet on this. We tick off Monk, we tick off Fox, and we hope Siakam makes up for it and re-signs.

I think it's clear Monk is viewed as the "core 4" with Fox, Domas and Keegan.

It's not close for me. I'd take Caruso. He has the defensive grit, BBIQ and enough shooting. He instantly becomes the starting SG.
Yeah, I think the thought of having 3 players at SG, SF, & PF that all 7’0”+ wingspans around Sabonis just makes me salivate but I’m with you that Caruso is more impactful in a vacuum.

Which is just so odd to me. It makes me wonder if they’re simply putting that message out to try and drive up his trade value.

With LaVine being shipped out soon, who’s supposed to be that star talent that they’re going to build around for the future? They have no engine (star talent) but want to keep the ‘95 spoiler (29 year old Caruso)?

What I meant was he currently doesn’t have access to the ‘26 pick until we are for sure in the playoffs this year. He could just trade a first available first round pick I suppose.
Ah, I see. I thought the pick turns to a 2nd if it doesn't convey this season? I might be misremembering though.

This is the the reality for Monte, he can only actually get what's actually available. Siakam, Kuzma, and LaVine are the names swirling around. OG's off the board so unless some other opportunities open up that's the current lot.

I’m starting to come around on even Lavine. If it means we start Monk to add to the firepower. Hate the contract but we 100% need another shot creator to help against teams like the Pelicans. If Brown could reign in Kuzma then he would also be a guy who could help.
OR
Huerter comes back to being Huerter. His lack of production is hurting big time.
The thing with Huerter is even at his best he's not a player you dump the ball off to and watch him go to work. Like Barnes, he can, but he's not comfortable doing it and will go back to his role in a hurry.

Here's my best case scenario for this trade deadline:

We trade Heurter and Barnes (and Davion if needed) for Siakam. We bring Siakam over but make zero efforts to integrate him into the offense. Use him in spot minutes. This makes way for Sasha. Begin to play Sasha more. He blossoms. Siakam doesn't resign. and we now have 40+M in cap space. Resign Malik. Sign borderline all star defensive free agent SF/PF that pairs well with Sasha in the starting five. Win championship next year.

Everyone will say they saw it coming, but I'm the only one that did.

Lasagna for all.

Amen bro , you have me on board with this :)
If it happens like this I promise to be in Sacramento for the finals and the first round of celebrations is on me :)

I asked @SacTownKid this as well, but why would you prefer to add LaVine over a guy like Grant (especially knowing we already have a shot creator at SG in Monk)?

You’re right the roster wouldn’t be bad if the deal is Barnes, Huerter, and Mitchell. Send them a couple 2nd rounders instead of a 1st. I have no idea what we have to give Atlanta to get our 1st back but do that then offer Portland a 1st and Duarte for Thybull

Fox
Monk/Lavine
Thybull/sasha
Keegan/Lyles
Sabonis/Len

Do you think a All-start ''superstar'' will come to play the 6th man in our roster ??
I highly doubt in such scenrio Monk will be the one with more minute over Lavine ....
Have not see much of Lavine but the Kings need a hard worker at the moment , one who can creat but also put efforts in defence
I don't see many of you describing Lavine as a defender ...

If forgot nba player are stupid and worry about starting when being a sixth man as just as valuable and you’d run the offense coming off the bench vs starting

Because Lavine is way more of a creator than Grant. I like Grant too though. I think you can overlap all 3 guys in Fox, Monk and Lavine and even have Lavine at SF against certain lineups. I don’t know what Monte is going to do but all the main guys being mentioned as available could help us in one way or the other.

Otherwise, Monte needs to go find a guy who can guard Ingram. He’s killed us. We are having to double him and they have way too many 3 point shooters.

I don’t lose sight that Sac has been great against most of the opposition but they have struggled against certain teams.

He’s not a defender but he’s a walking bucket. Put all 3 guys on the floor and it would be problematic for the opposition.

You definitely want to try and shore up as many weaknesses as possible, but it's always the reality of basketball that some teams are just bad matchups. The Bucks have the 3rd best record in the NBA, but 4 of their 11 losses came from being swept by the Pacers.

As it stands, the Kings just don't match up well with the Pelicans. Valanciunis gives Sabonis fits, they have lots of long athletic defenders and nobody on the Kings can defend Zion or Ingram. And if they are hitting from outside - well we saw how much worse that makes things last night.

One name that hasn’t been mentioned and could be a possibility in a 3 way deal with Toronto is DeJounte Murray. Gives you penetrating offense but a lot of defense from the guard spot. As long as Fox continues to be effective from 3, a Fox and Murray backcourt might be the best 2 way backcourt in the league.

Maybe, assuming they can play together. But it also means a very small lineup. Without shoes Fox, Monk, and Lavine measured 6'2", just under 6'2" and 6'4.5" respectively. Fox has improved as a defender but Monk and Lavine are not strong on that end of the floor.

It feels like you're just trading Huerter's shooting and playmaking for LaVine's ability to create for himself. I don't think that improves the team.

True….its why I’ve been advocating for a guy like Finney Smith. He would fit right in as another long 3 and D wing without breaking the bank in trading assets.

i also prefer to scorer 152 and win 152-151 then loose 99-100 , but this year Kings all about deffence .... Ok all about do better in deffence ;)

Somewhere here someone put this name in motion as well ....
Pesonally i still think Kings (with a bit of luck) can do not bad this year in playoffs and try the big trades in the summer ...
If it was up to me I will get rid of Mirchell , Huerter and try to take a good defensive guard to start the games , put HB in the second unit and use him mostly in the 4th quarters and put Lyles and Vezenkov in a batle for the starting 5 and the 20-25 MPG which are now reserved for HB
