NFL 2023-2024 Thread

49ers were exposed tonight. Their best secondary player runs a 4.44.....that doesn't cut it vs the fastest QB in the NFL a full tenth of a second faster......you gotta have at least one player with superior makeup speed in the secondary. This wasn't why the 49ers lost the game though, but its an ongoing hole in the dam. The Ravens blew up the 49er pass protection; Purdy's 1st interception set the tone - way too cavalier in that first TD throw attempt. Unless the 49ers Offensive Line plays alot better, they aren't gonna beat the Ravens (this season). The defense held up for only a half.

Key play was on defense after the Ravens stopped the 49ers initial 3rd Q series, on 2nd and 10 from the Ravens 5 or so, one of the 49er safeties was dragged for 3 extra yards to make it 3rd and 1 by Raven TE - and the 49ers defense folded then the rest of the way to make it 23-12.......2 dragged tacklers and extra yardage. 49ers will likely not win the SuperBowl with this defense. Today you see what happens when the offense gets blown out. They cannot fall back on their defense - with that hole in their average secondary. The offense must perform or they're toast. 2 of Purdy's Interceptions were great plays by Ravens defenders, and 2 were forced throws showing Purdy's bad judgement. Shanahan went too much with the pass earlier. Should've done more runs to take some more pressure off of Purdy.

When Lamar Jackson was a rookie, the Chargers brought out as much speed as they could for him and whooped him convincingly brigning up a safety as a linebacker. If you let Jackson get into open field, your defense is toast if you don't put speed on the field....he made Warner and the secondary look silly the last drive of the 2nd Q. The Ravens earned their win with their pass defense and pass rush. The Ravens offense didn't have to work too hard either after 4 turnovers. Purdy is still a great QB, but in this game he needed to buy himself more time by scrambling more, and checking down better - was completely rattled.. Samuel and Kittles had several bad drops that didn't help either.

Main disappointment was certainly Purdy who wilted just like Garrapolo under heavy pressure.....the composure was not there, and its not a good look.
Defense is not good enough to hold a full game of errors by Purdy and offense. Credit the Ravens - they're the best team in football going into the playoffs and should be the favorites, unless maybe the Bills come together as the dark horse team.

I thought the defense played fine other than some stupid penalties. It's not like the defense legit gave up 33 points. The Ravens starting field position was insane due to all of the interceptions.

Purdy has something going on upstairs when he doesn't have it going early on. It was very evident on his last drive when his throws were all the sudden very inaccurate. He had the same sort of mini yips earlier in the season for that 3 game stretch.

Hope everyone can get healthy and they can hang on to the #1 seed. That bye week will be crucial to get everyone healed up.

Harbaugh is a great coach.
He had the ravens more than prepared and the Niners weren’t. The ravens were jumping the Niners routes all night. They easily left 3 more INT’s on the field.
This Niners team with Shannahan as coach will never win a Super Bowl. This team still has the most talent and they are very good and to come out so unprepared? That’s pathetic. All on the coach.

It's really all on the O Line at this point. When those guys are healthy and playing well the Niners are basically unstoppable. When key guys are injured (Trent Williams, Aaron Banks) and/or the line isn't holding their blocks we get these games with multiple interceptions.

After the Chase Young trade I questioned whether it was the right strategy to add another pass rusher for half a season when there were bigger holes to fill at O Line and DB. It looked like a brilliant move for the first few weeks because it set Bosa loose again to wreck QBs but yesterday we saw the flip side as our lack of depth at O Line and CB was brutally exposed.

Here's what we do know... Given even adequate protection Brock Purdy is a franchise level QB. He's proven that already. The defense we have this year is built around the pass rush... those guys have to get home consistently for our coverage to be effective. We've also seen guys struggle to finish plays with tackles in multiple games this season. Like it or not, this is a finesse team. It comes down to how healthy and motivated they are and whether Shanahan is able to big brain his play calls and keep the defense one step behind our playmakers.

OL definitely needs to be addressed. That chart posted a couple pages back shows that the Niners have one of the worst pass blocking OLs according to PFF and it really shows. It would be incredibly evident if Purdy hadn't been as good as he has been this year. Jimmy G would have been eaten alive already. Back in the Jim Harbaugh days, the OL improvement is what got that team going. Staley was already solid but that 2010 draft where they nabbed Iupati and Davis in the first round wasn't sexy at all but that's what got the team rolling in 2011 with Alex Smith still looking like Alex Smith, but having more time to make decisions.

It's crazy how important Trent Williams is. The second he's off the field, it's like the line turns into swiss cheese.

Their OL is what it is right now. Theres really no one they can pick up. Anyone they plug in will be nothing better than a stop gap.
It feels like everything rests with 35 year old Trent Williams. If he goes down thats it. Hopefully his groin isn't too much of an issue.

Said this a few weeks ago, but I think Trent Williams is the one guy (outside of Brock of course) that could really crumble our title hopes if he gets hurt. The O-Line has honestly been masked this year with Brocks ability to throw with anticipation and get the ball out quick and Trent being one of the best tackles in the game. But everyone else is very very replaceable and probably aren't starting caliber O-Line for a good team.

Yep and it's not just pass blocking, but run blocking too.

I can think of a handful of 30+ yard runs by CMC and nearly all of them have been down the left sideline. Can't think of a single one to the right sideline this year. It's kind of Trent Williams or bust right now.

Not sure if it's still the case (probably), but CMC was averaging like 6.7 YPC to the left side a few weeks back lol. Absolute insanity.

49ers are going to need their offense to win games this postseason - the defense is not up to stopping top level teams consistently (Eagles do not look like a top level team right now). Rams and Lions are playing best in NFC. Despite records, Eagles, Seahawks, Cowboys look like tier 2 teams - good teams, but stoppable. Rams are the most concerning actually. NFC Teams will be using the Ravens game as reference now for Purdy - bringing 6 on the line and blitzing heavily. Purdy is going to have to figure out improvisation, scrambling and check-downs better. You just can't force throws like he was doing Monday for at least 2 of the interceptions. Vs the Eagles he was checking down better , but the Eagles were not generating the same level of pressure as Ravens either.. Shanahan had Purdy pocket passing with too much instability vs Ravens; need to get him on the move to extend pass plays an extra second or more. On top of that Ravens secondary were very physical, and benefitted from relaxed refereeing. Purdy has good mobility - utilize it to get him better confidence. Would've liked Shanahan to run a bit more earlier. Really the 49ers would lose to the majority of NFL teams with a 4 turnover differential. There is some benefit to being blown out now; they have a chance to review the errors, and develop mitigation plays/plans. If Christmas were the Superbowl it would've been an ugly disappointment. The Ravens also now have the psychological edge much like the 49ers have over the Cowboys. Shanahan and company better think of something alot better on defense for Jackson than they trotted out if having the misfortune of playing the Ravens again this season. Luckily there appears a few AFC teams that are up for the task first -> Bills, Browns, Dolphins all come first to mind.

So many people gave me crap when I said Baker would be a better QB for the Niners than Jim. Look at him now!
I wanted Baker last season when he became available after Jimmy went down. Even when Brock balled out. I’m always on the side of first round QB “busts” if they were never on a good team to begin with. Even Sam Darnold
