Eh, the NFL is a QB and play makers league. Nobody has been a better, more dynamic play making threat than Tyreek Hill. Just having him on the field changes things, even when he doesn’t get the ball. Think Deion Sanders but on offense.
Whatever side of the field Tyreek lines up, the safety has to shade heavily due to his speed. And MIA has Jaylen Waddle — who just set the rookie record for receptions in 16 games — on the field too.
Can’t ever have too many play makers on the field and Miami now has Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle, Cedrick Wilson, Devante Parker, Mike Gesicki, Chase Edmonds and Raheem Mostert.
As a long suffering Dolphins fan, I’m happy to see them make big splashes the past couple days. They has the WORST offensive line in the NFL but have addressed it with Terron Armstead and Connor Williams. That alone should make Tua Tagovailoa better as IIRC he had the least pocket time of any QB last season.
Adding Tyreek Hill is a huge cherry on top.
When I first heard about the deal, I suffered from sticker shock. 5 picks?!
But the more I looked at it and thought about it, it’s like Miami used their 29th and 50th picks in this upcoming draft to move up into the top 10 to draft Hill. If Hill were in this draft — knowing what we all know about his production — he’d surely go top 10, maybe even #1 overall since there’s no consensus QB to take.
The 4th and 6th round picks are fairly inconsequential. Statistically most those picks don’t even make NFL rosters (yes, I know Tom Brady was famously a 6th rounder).
So in terms of draft capital versus Tyreek Hill’s proven elite play making ability, I’m more than fine with the compensation they surrendered.
As for the contract? Hill just turned 28 three weeks ago. He’s still quite young and in his prime. And being that he’s been the most explosive play maker in the league for a number of years, I get why Miami wanted to do it.
Remember this play?
When you can get a player than can do the above better than any other player currently in the league, adding the 2nd and 4th/6th rounders are a worthwhile cost.
For all the talk of Mahomes throwing deep to Hill, he threw a lot of shorter passes that Hill turned into huge YAC plays (like the play linked above). And Tua Tagovailoa is among the more accurate short to mid range passers there is. It’s his strength.
Joe Montana forged a HOF career w/o a cannon arm largely by throwing short, quick accurate passes to Jerry Rice, John Taylor, Roger Craig, and Brent Jones. I hear those teams did ok.
But when Tua has to throw 50+ yard lasers, he’s shown he can on the biggest of stages:
If MIA’s line gives him more time than he had last season, I’m one confident Fins fan!
