2018 Draft - the morning after (split)

#95
I have heard and read what Coach K said about MBIII While it is true that you would expect a college coach to speak well of his player, the degree to which Coach K praises MBIII is staggering. This is not just coach speak. You get the distinct impression that Coach K means every word of it. The guy is special The KIngs front office knew how good Doncic was, Think how good MBIII must be to pass on Doncic. As I posted earlier, MBIII will be the best King since CWebb

I just know that we will get to see next Thursday night in the SL opener.....our first taste of Bagley and Giles together. Something tells me this is going to go better than the T Rob debut where the collective fan base went “ oh oh”.

How do we (you) know how the fan base feels about wanting to draft Doncic? Or do you think Kingsfans posters represent the fan base? Cause they don't.
Let's put it this way. Th vocal fan base that participated in the polls was decidedly in favor of Doncic by an overwhelming amount. He got between 68 to 72% on virtually every poll. This included several other polls, including Dave, Grant and one other I saw but don't remember where (or maybe I do and don't want to give them a free plug. :p )

What those polls didn't show was the margin that he was favoured over other players. I always voted for Doncic because I felt he was a better fit (need a SF); however, I had Bagley even with him on my board talentwise. I also feel that Bagley has the higher ceiling.

I have been following Bagley for over 2 years feeling that the Kings had no chance to draft him. He was supposed to be in next year's draft where we don't have a pick, and his talent has always screamed #1 pick. This year there were 5 guys who I felt could end up being the best player in the draft and not be surprised by it. They are Ayton, Bagley, Jackson, Doncic and Porter. There are a couple others with a chance, but they would surprise me. Of those 5 players there are 2 that I would be shocked if they were busts. I feel like their floor is at least 10+ years as good NBA starters. They are Bagley and Doncic. Needless to say, I am very happy with our draft.

Passing on Luka will be something the fan base at some point, will realize was a mistake. Quite the mistake.

The reasoning for it from Vlade is asinine. It's ludicrous. Bagley was #1 on his draft board? Bagley is clearly more talented that Luka? Or the leaks from Dave which suggest Fox having less of the ball was some sort of a problem. Ha. If CP3 can see less of the ball, so can Fox.

Having watched Luka in person, the across the board skill set at his size is rare. He's already better than Bogdan. This is a kid who projects to fill the stat sheet across the board, has the clutch gene and most importantly, can be the type of engine which drives a team.

And Vlade passed on that for a soft big who can't D up, can't pass and does most of his damage without the rock.

When you get the #2 pick in this type of draft, you better come away with a guy who you'll be throwing the rock to in the 4th and playing thru. That ain't Bagley. That's Doncic.

You're really selling Bagley short. I was as pro Doncic as anyone, but I'm not going to argue that Bagley is a bad prospect just because I preferred Doncic. Bagley has a tremendous skillset, defense notwithstanding, that should help us tremendously. If he even becomes an average defender he could wind up being the best player in this draft.

I never suggested he's a "bad" prospect.

I'm suggesting he's not the #1 prospect in this draft as Vlade thinks, more talented than Luka as Vlade thinks, or worthy of the 2nd pick in this draft as Vlade thinks.

There's a massive gulf between that stance and "bad" prospect.

I agree with the spirit of your post and disappointment. But Bagley will be an upgrade up front at least. He's likely better than any Kings frontcourt player immediately - which isn't saying too much. Are the Kings near the playoffs next year? Very doubtful. 2 years, still doubtful. Maybe in 3 years which seems a long wait unfortunately.

I have a small theory and this is in retro spect, thinking that they didn't want Luka to take the ball from Fox AND Bogi. Just a thought. I actually had it a few months ago but had forgotten about it.

Not saying it's right, just a thought.

My one read on Bagley is, having watched over 40 mins of his offensive highlights, only ONE TIME did he ever use his right hand to score. Does he have a right hand near the basket? I can't find any evidence of it. Pro defenders will figure that out right away. Hopefully something he will work on extensively

Time will tell about the Luca thing. Maybe he ends up to be a cross between Magic Johnson and Larry Bird as some seem to think - the transcendental player of our time. Maybe not. Maybe he'll be a Toni Kukoc or a Hedo Tukoglu or a Gordon Hayward. One thing I feel confident about is that this is not a situation where management is passing up on Kemba Walker in order to get Jimmer and Salmons. Bagley is going to be a fine player in this league for years to come. It's just a question of how fine.

Nice to see you, even if I patently disagree with your assessment. I, too, wanted Doncic but I do not think the gulf between Luka and MB3 is anywhere near what you're saying.

Bagley will make a difference.

Day after and I still wish it was Luka!

I think Bagley will win me over though. Can't wait until summer league/preseason! He's gonna be fun to watch!

(Although I reserve the right to be insufferable if Doncic outplays him when we face the Mavs)
If you were completely happy, I don't think I'd recognize you. Remember, I was on board for Luka from day 1. I've been reading everything I can about Bagley and Vlade made the right choice. It's gonna be fine. :)

Hi VF, hope all is well. How's the family? How's the house in the forest?

Best thing I can say about the draft is Bagley likely will be a good NBA player, good enough Kings fans will like him and appreciate him. I have no doubt fans will jump out of their seats when he rips off dunks on the fast break or on the lob.

But it will be counterbalanced with Luka being superior. The major difference in this league and with these two is do you have the game which forces extra defensive attention and forces teammates to play off you. Luka does. Bagley projects as someone who'll play off the attention of others. A 6'8" point forward with his handle and his vision simply commands far more attention than Bagley's game.

All's good. You missed my incredible stories of my adventures with the 700-lb. bear. ;)

Hope all is well with you, too. Glad to see your "face" again around here. You have been missed.

Sorry for the O/T distraction. rainmaker has been a part of our KF family for a very long time.

It's not how they play in Summer League, it's most important how they play in 2 or 3 years. I think Bagley's ceiling is All-Star level, but it will take him several years to get there.

GO KINGS !!!

I just meant that I think Bagley will be fun to watch right out of the gate. I agree with you that he's a work in progress, but he'll probably be a double double threat day 1!

Great coach and great ownership, IMO it will work out fine
Uhhh Rondo and Carlisle was a disaster lol there’s no guarantee for anything in this league. Look at Kawhi and Coach pop right now over there in San Antonio

When people simply don’t mesh, there ain’t much you can do about it. Cousins and Doncic is asking for trouble to brew

With, Fox, Giles, and Bagley, this is the most athletic team the Kings have ever had. If they can add a good 3 and D guy at the 3 through trade (WCS) or in FA, then they could make a big jump up in wins next year. A fresh Bogs, a more experienced Fox, an even better Hield, a stronger Skal, and two freaking 6'11 studs. Thank God this team didn't end up with 8th or so pick in the draft. Then we'd probably be talking about cold leftovers instead of about juicy steak.
Yea, and people forget how good we shot the 3 last season. This isn’t a team full of non-shooters
