2018 Draft - the morning after (split)

#2
just watched more highlights of Bagley and im just now seeing his interview after being picked #2. Seems like such a great spirit, and i love how grateful he is to be there as if he wasn't sure and didn't assume. Says a lot about how he was raised and where he comes from.

all of that coupled with how hard he plays, and im warming up to this a lot more. Bring on the summer league so we can see what's WHAT

Not sure if it was posted anywhere else.

They asked Vlade immediately why he didn't choose a 3 or a wing player, his answer was that Bagley can play 3-5. He played in Duke more like a super athletic DeAndre Jordan The Greek Freak to me. I know he's athletic but does he really have the extra skills to actually play NBA 3?

Can he play 3 like Antetokounmpo?

This is a good point, I think you're spot on on your Mavs analysis here.

BUT, I think Luka would have been a good fit for us too, as we do desperately need a big wing. The biggest concern I had with Luka is that we've got some guys who are (or are expected to be) great with the ball in their hands: Fox, Bogdan, Giles - and we might dilute Luka's contribution, while Baglet's athleticism will stand out for us.

Well, looking back on my season notes on Bagley, they ended like this:

So, I'm OK with Bagley!
really really loving these posts guys. I feel ten times better. Hell, i never even stepped foot in the Bagley thread because i was so enamored with Luka Doncic. Now that it's over, i can focus on what we actually do have. You made some really great points about the playmakers we already have on this team, and Luka maybe being a bit redundant or having to relegate himself to being a spot up shooter at times, or something.

I thought I would be a little less disappointed when the excitement of the moment was gone. I was wrong. I hate the pick. Even more than I thought. I believed I could accept passing on Luka to get Bagley, it turned out I can’t.

I really really really want to be wrong, I want Bagley to make me look like a fool. But I only get negative vibes right now, I have this strong feeling our FO just did something extremely stupid that we will regret for a very long time. I don’t know if I can take it.

Well he should be, the higher up the draft one is picked the more money they earn on the outset. I'm more of a wait and see, and still somewhat disappointed.

I can understand this, but rationally you gotta give Bagley a chance and a season or 2. I dont think Bagley will be a bust like your vibe seems to be giving....or a player worthy of regret, just not an All-Star....a good player but beaten by the best in the league. This was a "safe" pick, kind of like Cauley-Stein was a few years back.

Post-scoring just doesn't fit the modern NBA anymore. Even Cousins slowly went away with it after 2 years in the NBA which was in 6 years ago.

ZBo was a bad signing. Kings are basically paying him 12million to be a coach.
No one said just be a post scorer. Don’t know how much you watch Boston but they often go to Horford in the post when they need a bucket. Bagley with some ZBo moves would draw instant double teams

How was this the safe pick. When all the writers and 70% of your fan base think Luka’s the guy it hardly seems the safe pick to take Bagley. Vlade went on a limb and will be the hero or the goat.

Doncic and Bagley weren't my picks, I would have taken Bamba but I'm excited to see what Bagley can do in summer league. He should dominate right from the get go.

In regards to all the Doncic lovers out there I think he landed in a good spot. Unfortunately for you lovers I think Dallas is going to make a run at Cousins and make a playoffs this year. It may kind of hurt some of you
I love Boogie, but pairing him with Doncic sounds like one of the worst ideas in basketball. Hard to see a way where they don’t clash on the court. And Dennis Smith Jr is involved?? Combustible situation.

Do you recall who the Kings passed on to get that flashy ticket-producing Jason Williams? Nowitski and Paul Pierce. To this day it fries me just thinking about it. Forget flash. I'll take 20 and 10 every day of the week over flash. And while I'm on the subject, Petrie was a stickler, and absolute freaking stickler about taking the bpa, but nope, he didn't do it in that draft. Why? There was a hue and cry by the Sacramento fan base about the need for a point guard and he bowed to the pressure with his acknowledgment that he drafted Williams due to need. So much for the collective wisdom of Sacramento fandom.
Vlade had every reason to appease the fan base, making the widely popular choice and satisfying our nostalgia for the fancy passing motion offense of the glory days. In the immediate short term, it would have been a win for him...and then we would be dealing with another highly skilled emotional player with maturity issues, along with a penchant for partying that wasn't a major issue with DMC. Been there, done that, and I'm still exhausted from it. I'll take the other highly skilled player that has maturity and doesn't come with so much potential for distraction and drama. And as much as I loved White Chocolate, I would choose Dirk over him any day. I applaud Vlade for sticking his neck out and making the choice most likely to get us where we need to go, as a winning team with a winning culture.

You should stop spreading misinformation. What a load of nonsense. You even managed to get a dig in at Cousins, which is really pathetic.

There are zero question marks about Doncic' character. Him being fiery on the court doesn't contradict that.

If Bagley is a faster, bouncier(is that a word?) version of Z-Bo he's going to be a very very good player.
They are not even close to being the same type of player. Different body builds and completely different games. Z-bo is king of boxing out and positioning because he's ground bound and can't elevate. This leads to him having a massive amount of skill down in the post. Bagley jumps over everyone and anyone in his way and has good instincts to boot. Bagley can also shoot from the outside a bit, which Z-bo couldn't do until towards the end of his career.

What we can hope for is for Bagley to pick up a few tricks from Z-bo, especially his footwork. That's what makes me nervous about Bagley, I didn't see many post moves from him.

Not saying Doncic has bad character, he's a great kid and his teammates seem to love him. He's just young and and growing, with some of the usual things that go along with that. Dallas is a great fit for him and I'm excited for his future there.

Dude Pollard came on the radio talking about trob and McLemore's issues before the draft.
Again, you’re talking about 2 players from Kansas — where Pollard still has a job and has lots of connections to the program. Furthermore, you’ll find that lots of people on this very board were skeptical of both those players. And while not from Kansas, a lot more were also right about Jimmer. Not everyone drank that Koolaid. Why you and some others believe any of this makes Scot Pollard a de facto draft expert is beyond me.

Am I saying that Pollard doesn’t know anything? Of course not. But he’s by no means an expert and is no more right or wrong than an avid fan. There are fans of this board such as @bajaden that probably see more of these potential draft picks, especially foreign ones, than Pollard does.

ZBo is going to be here whether we like it or not. No one is trading for him and they aren't going to just release him. I just hope his tutelage of Bagley is in practice only and not during games.

Pollard has been spot on in his public evaluations of players making extreme calls that not many others were echoing at the time. Go ahead and believe whatever you want, all that matters is whether the Kings got it right or not and we won't know that for a few years. In the meantime it makes me feel good that Pollard thinks we nailed it.

yeah alot of Salty people in here. I was very hard on Doncic even got banned from that thread. I still think he will be a good player. I just didn't like the fit. Im not gonna rub anybody's nose in the fact we didn't take him. Also those that wanted Doncic shouldn't just be bashing Bagley. Neither of these guys have done anything in the NBA. Dont base your comments on what you think they MIGHT do

With, Fox, Giles, and Bagley, this is the most athletic team the Kings have ever had. If they can add a good 3 and D guy at the 3 through trade (WCS) or in FA, then they could make a big jump up in wins next year. A fresh Bogs, a more experienced Fox, an even better Hield, a stronger Skal, and two freaking 6'11 studs. Thank God this team didn't end up with 8th or so pick in the draft. Then we'd probably be talking about cold leftovers instead of about juicy steak.

Haha two great passers/shooters clashing smh can’t make this stuff up

Wow that team would get pounded defensively. Glad we didn’t go that direction.
Probably not considering everyone goes small 90% of the time and if you think Bagley will help our defense than I’ll see you in May when you get disappointed.

Rather worry about how our team defense would need to improve. Instead how in gods name are we gonna spread the floor with Fox-Bagley-Giles playing together. 3 non shooters is how fools build teams
