Free Agency Open Thread (NBA and Kings!)

Sources saying he intends to sign if Wiz don't match it. Interesting that the national Twitterverse is clowning the Kings over it - because I think getting Otto for the max is the wet dream of most Kings fans right now. Different perspectives I guess.
Well not everyone thinks he deserves a max. He definitely isn't an allstar or superstar that deserves an automatic max. Also when people hear max, they think curry/lebron or even mike conley type of money which this is not. I think this is a weak free agency class for gettable guys (no one else getting KD,curry etc) and kings have a lot of space. I really hope they are right on Otto earning his salary and we don't end up looking like Portland with crabbe and turner.

I'd be surprised if Washington don't match unless they plan on going after an FA or believe in Kelly Oubre stepping up.

Can Washington afford a max level free agent or an expensive free agent?

If they can't, then they should match any offer and bring back their starting small forward.

If they can, then they might decide to consider their options before matching to see if there's an upgrade available, though I suspect they'd still match anyway and try to get assets back for him in a sign and trade.

It would be nice if we can pull this off, but I'm not confident he'll end up a King.

Which is understandable. But I'm willing to trust our fo on betting a max on someone potentially earning it over someone who's a big name on the wrong side of 30.
It makes sense to target Porter because he's what 24 years old? He's not even reached his prime or his ceiling, so there's plenty he can offer us now and in the future (or any team he signs for).

As for someone on the other side of 30, then it depends on who that player is and how good the team is. If you can get Chris Paul and you're already a play off team - go do it because he's going to make you better. However, if the team is Sacramento or Orlando - don't bother since he's not really on the same time line as the rest of the roster.

I agree with your point that we should trust our FO and bet on a young rising player because at this stage we are a young team that is probably a couple of seasons off being competitive and ready to fight for a play off spot, especially in the west. So someone like Porter is on a similar timeline to our players, someone over 30 is not, but could have been a perfect addition had we still got Cousins and realistic play off aspirations.

I would send out good assets to the Wizards to make this happen too. I'd send Jackson and another quality young not named Buddy/Skal/De'Aaron/Papa in a S/T, and take back Mahinmi

If Nets offer max and Washington doesn't want to pay him it but threatens to, it could come down to who offers what in a S/T

Kings will lose their $3.0 million trade exception, created when they traded Omri Casspi.

WHY?? Because we didn't use it?
We have to go under the cap to make the offer. As soon as we go under the cap, the trade exception melts away. No biggie, this was always going to happen. We could only keep the trade exception by re-signing Rudy and Tyreke etc., etc., to continually remain above the cap. That's a bad play to hold on to a trade exception. :)

Seconded. Bogdan off limits too. Giles can fake fail the physical too.

By the time they reach the end of their rookie contracts. Porters would be up as well. You talk about earning min then say you would be disappointed with short rotation. And how does Jackson earn his with no competition.
Earn minutes in a distribution- obviously some are going to get 18+ min and some 10+. You wanna even it out, you play better.
If they're short a SF, Jackson may get the luxury of starting, so be it....there aren't set rules for minutes, its up to the coach. And yes I'd be disappointed with a short rotation.....the concepts aren't mutually exclusive. You can have a fairly even distribution of minutes and have guys trying to improve.

If I'm Otto Porter and it is between the Kings and the Nets max offers, I would look at the rosters and pick the Kings, without a doubt! :)
Agreed, he's a good fit with us and if he looks at our roster he should see a lot of potential. However, we are in the west with a lot of strong teams and star players. There's even other rising young teams to join last year's play off contenders like the Lakers and T-Wolves. It's going to be tough to rise in the west, whereas in the east it's perhaps easier for him to get play off basketball sooner than he will here.

Why? Well, first the Nets do have some talent and at times played a lot of teams close last year. Sure they've lost Lopez but they have got Russell who came into the league highly rated. Hollis-Jefferson is a talented kid. Lots of cap space as well to sign FAs and no reason to be bad because they don't own their draft pick. Maybe they can put something together that can sneak them into the play offs. I guess there's a question over the team's ceiling but if Russell breaks out and reaches that star potential and Porter breaks out and becomes a better scorer in a greater role, with some smart additions they could improve.

With that said, there's more talent here and he's a good fit in our starting line up. So in an either or choice I would take our team over theirs even in a tougher conference, though some might prefer their chances out east at having greater play off chances and success in the play offs.

Forget the money for a second, the kid fits the roster like a glove. Fills a gaping hole at SF, plays D, moves the ball, good IQ, land a Lawson and Zbo and that would be a tremendous FA period for Sac.
My thoughts exactly.

If this happens, I am legit hoping for a push for the 8th seed. That's a 35-40 win team minimum.

Year after that fully expect playoffs and Vlade with the biggest crap eating I told you so grin you've ever seen.

He's meeting with the nets right? eh, I kinda wish he'd just sign the offer sheet now, but I guess he has to weigh all of his options. Is it possible for us to pull a Stan van gundy and just fax it to em?

So Ordinary That It's Truly Quite Extraordinary

I've said all along I love offering Porter the max. I'm not worried about missing out on anyone - it seems like we did play it super smart and made a few 2 year offers here and there first. If we miss out on Porter it's seriously going to handcuff the Wizards and we are going to have lots of splashy money next year to go with what will likely be a high draft pick, still a year before we have to start committing any real money on any of our young guys.

So if we miss on Porter, we can pretty much pick up whatever plan B target remains on a one year deal most likely or make a move to take on a large contract to help someone else out for future assets, because it sure looks like everyone else with money has c(r)apped themselves out.

I love it.

After a very nice draft, the Kings are gettin' a little too itchy......I like Porter, but $25 million per year is just overkill. He'd be getting top 20 player money, and my guess is he will not lead the Kings in scoring (thinking Hield will). I guess the Kings Org is burning holes in their pockets. I hope it works out.....
Not really. Top 20 player money is currently in the 30+ million range, Lowry, Griffin, etc. 20-25 million per is what the market is currently dictating for a player like Porter. JJ Reddick just got $23 mil

I fully accept Washington to match the max offer that Kings have offered to Porter (who still has not signed an offer sheet by the way) but I am happy that Kings are keeping the bastards honest.
