Trade deadline approaching for Kings

Saw this on bleacher report, hope this trade doesn't happen but don't disagree with the author on most of the story...

Los Angeles Lakers Receive: Rudy Gay, Ben McLemore, two second-round picks

Sacramento Kings Receive: Luol Deng

Kings general manager Vlade Divac made it easy on us when he told ESPN's Marc Stein that DeMarcus Cousins wasn't going anywhere. At least for the time being, we can take a hiatus from the annual tradition of speculating on Cousins' future, as said future almost certainly features a contract from the Kings worth more than $200 million.

More broadly, though, Divac and the Kings' history of strange moves makes predictions difficult. A braintrust willing to surrender useful vets and draft assets in order to clear cash for Rajon Rondo (yes, this really happened) puts everything on the table. Remember, Divac is the guy who a league source described in Kevin Arnovitz's deep dive on the Kings for ESPN.com thusly: "Nobody in that position has ever been less qualified, less capable or a nicer person."

Perhaps Divac's amicable nature will lead to a swap for Lakers forward Luol Deng.

The Kings could certainly use a steadying, professional veteran presence on the roster, and Deng is most useful these days as an undersized power forward—an area of need Matt Barnes and Anthony Tolliver haven't consistently met.

So, the bold prediction: Sacramento sends Rudy Gay, Ben McLemore and two second-round picks to the Lakers for Deng, which allows L.A. to get out from under Deng's onerous four-year deal and clear nearly $18 million from next year's books...assuming Gay recovers well enough from his torn Achilles to opt out of the final season of his contract. McLemore is a pure flier. Maybe he shows the Lakers something, but more likely, he walks away and L.A. isn't upset about it.

Deng is already overpaid for his production, and the aging curve will only exacerbate that issue in the final three years of his current deal. But he's a name, and the Kings are devoted to winning in the short term. This is the kind of head-scratching move that fits their brand.

Stranger things have happened. Actually, with the Kings, stranger things always happen.

I disagree with a lot of that article.

Don't blame Vlade for making room for Rondo. Sometimes you have to take a chance and see if it pans out. This is Sacramento so playing it completely safe in free agency will land you no where.

Divac may be less qualified than the rest of the GM's but he's certainly not less capable than any GM has ever been. So far he's made more positive moves than he has negative. We have a good coach who has these guys playing their butts off. The team lacks talent but it's fairly balanced for a squad of roleplayers. His draft picks have been good for the most part. Nearly everyone wanted Willie and we got him. We are all mostly in disagreement on the Papa pick but most of us are satisfied with Malachi and Skal late in the round.

I just don't see any way that Vlade trades for Deng. This writer is assuming that Vlade is a fumbling idiot that will just trade for a guy with declining skills and a massive contract because he recognizes his name.

I dont see any trade happening regardless of our pending FA's. All our trade chips are either contributing towards a playoff push or injured. However, if a trade were to come down, as Carolija mentioned in a previous post, I would like to think it would help lift the condition on our 2017 draft status.

I think a trade for Carmelo would be a worthwhile gamble. He's an older star, but he can still get it done on offense. I trust that Joerger would make Carmelo a willing passer (he was working on that part of his game for the last few years and did pass the ball well at times) and a team player. Make no mistake, Carmelo Anthony coming here would make others want to come here too. He's still a star and he can still put up points with the best of them. He's not that old. Even if he is a ball stopper at times, it's what we need when Cousins is sitting. We need a 2nd go to option. He can definitely be it.
Phil Jackson sent out a tweet to alienate Melo and perhaps attempt to make him more receptive to waive his no trade clause. Reports are Melo is not too happy with Phil, so perhaps that would make him more receptive to signing off on a deal to a team besides CLE or LAC. If the Kings were making a play for Horford, before ATL pulled him off the market, it is only logical Melo would be in SACs wheelhouse too.

Would you do Ben, Willie and Rudy for Melo? One player has a busted Achille and two were barely getting off the bench one month ago. I think I would do this trade, and risk that by time Melo's career winds down in two seasons, Skal will be better than Willie, and Malachi will be better than Ben. So you are upgrading for the immediate term with a PF to put next to Boogie, and by the time these prospects marinate, they will be better than the guys you are trading away.

Pass.

so tell me why we would even bother when he'll be a unrestricted FA in a few months? we have expirings and can outright just sign him without giving up real assets.
It gives us an opportunity to convince and sign him before anyone else. No player of his caliber will sign here on the open market imo...but they may consider it after being traded here and history backs that up, not just on our team but many teams. Worst case scenerio is he walks and we free up about 14 mil in cap space. I honestly dont see papa g as a long term option at C, especially with Cousins here for the long haul.

Melo coming to Sac at this point of his career is a pipe dream. Hes never waive his no trade clause to come here and even if he did we dont have the assets for him. In fact its not even a pipe dream im sure id want....more like a pipe nightmare.

Is anyone considering Mrs. Anthony here?

C'mon people, take your blinkers off. Melo forced his trade to the Knicks because his wife wants to live in NYC. He ensured that he had no trade clause in his last contract precisely because his wife and him did not want to move away from NYC. When people start bringing up Sacramento as Melo's destination I laugh hard. Talk about pipedream. He is the LEAST likely star level player who ends up in Sacramento. Just WILL NOT HAPPEN

I don't keep tabs on Mrs. Anthony like you do, apparently. But I do know Melo is disgusted with his GM. Whether that translates into a willingness to go anywhere to get away from a toxic environment is anyone's guess. I do know Melo has a repertoire with Boogie, so there's that.

The reported rumor from LAC was Jamal Crawford and Austin Rivers and throw-ins. Would you rather have Crawford and Rivers or Ben and Willie? I think I'd rather bet on Willie turning into a force next to Porzingis.

The Knicks are trying to pry loose Kevin Love but that's not going to happen so if the Knicks are intent on moving him they are going to have to weigh their best offers and I think the Kings can compete in this regard. Keep in mind half or more of teams would have NO interest in Melo due to age, contract and being a ball-stopper on offense. That's going to limit the market and trade offers NYK receives.

Agree with you. I wouldn't want Carmelo if he was free. Not because he's not a good player, but because he's just a more prolific version of Rudy Gay (ball stopper) and doesn't fit the team. The Kings already have a star player and a go to post up, 1 on 1 player that demands double-triple teams. They need players around him that move the ball and can hit open shots. Melo can hit open shots but needs far too many of them and doesn't move the ball enough.

Having said the above, I heard that Melo lives in LA during the offseason. I don't think he's super-glued to the NY area.

I would do that trade in a heart beat. In all honesty, we are the clear winners in that scenario, but NY gets a solid PF/C next to Porzingis and potentially 18 million dollars or so off their books, which they can use for a free agent. It's not that bad for them either and not a bad haul considering everyone knows they want Melo out.

My main reason for bringing Melo up at all is exactly because he is being shoved out the door and he's still a legit star. He's 25th on the all time scoring list! We need talent and guys like Melo aren't available often and we all know a star of his level would never come here in free agency. A risk well worth taking I think.

We're on the same page. I created a thread on Melo trade a week ago. Its a long shot but worth pursuing.

Here is your problem. The Los Angeles media regarding NBA trade rumors is notorious for just flat out making things up. According to some of the past rumors coming out of LA, at this point the Lakers should be competing for a championship with Cousins, Lebron, Melo, Chris Paul, and Kevin Love all on the team.

This guy referred to Vlade as the least qualified, least capable and nicest GM ever. Then he goes on to make this trade scenario completely out of thin air. What a joke. Seems likes the article was written out of his parents' basement with Mountain Dew and Doritos in hand.
I think it is a terrible trade. Would be an awful move. Why in the world would we want to take on that cap? The author must be a Lakers fan

Looks like the magic is really pushing for Ibaka trade.
If only we can get Ibaka for the price of Omri and KK (works on trade checker)..... sigh!
Even if it's just a season of playing him next to Cuz, I think the result would surely make him consider Sacramento next season.

Doubt it, Magic thought that too and look at them now, scrambling to get anything in return.

The Lakers can't trade their first until draft day, and then only if it falls in the top three, but even then I'm not sure I would take on 3 years of Deng for a top-3 this year. I mean, I'd be tempted, but that's a really expensive draft pick. If Lonzo Ball is on the board, I guess I do it. Otherwise, no, thank you, but I do not want the age 32-34 seasons of a guy who has completely fallen off a cliff at age 31.

not worth the gamble. we already gambled big with the trade to the sixers. can't bleed talent and more assets in our situation. throw the max at him in the offseason if we really want him.

To Raptors for Ross and a first rounder. Way more, than we could possibly offer.
Magic GM will be fired in the offseason.
I like it for the Raptors. Freed up playing time for Powell. Can go all shooting lineup with Ibaka at the 5 for maximum spacing or really big with Valanciunas and Ibaka to hurt opponents in the paint.
Losing Ross hurts their depth, but you have to give something to get value.
Cavs should be careful. Without a healthy Love Toronto might cause some serious problems for them.

In an ideal world Toronto could somehow aquire another SG/SF while getting rid of Sullinger, Caboclo or Bebe, but those guys aren't very enticing with Sullys injury history in mind.
With Ibaka there, they could simply cut Sullinger and try their luck with some D-Leaguer.

Great trade for the Raps. They needed a good big badly, a late first and a backup player is a small price to pay IMO. When you're a contender these are the type of moves that you have to make to get better.

Agreed. Hennigan traded two nice assets for Ibaka (while also spending to sign another big in free agency and burying/forcing his best prospect to play out of position at SF) and then, months later, traded Ibaka for two worse assets. That's a fireable offense.

As for the Raps, I like this move. The Cavs may be vulerable with the Love injury, and the Raps, I think, needed to do something with impending free agent Lowry voicing some frustration. Ibaka's a good fit, and they do have a ton of frontcourt depth with him, Jonas, Bebe, and Patterson. If they can turn around and shore up their wing depth, or at least get some consistent production out of Carroll, they will be in great shape.

After his latest injuries I can't see a team that would want to trade anything meaningful for him. I suspect we don't make any moves unless someone desperately wants Rudy and is willing to waive the medical to get it done!
Who could Rudy land?

A longer contract the other team wants out of?

I was thinking Omri for a long shot prospect maybe, or a second perhaps is about the best he could get on his own.

Just noticed, that James Johnson is having one hell of a shooting season (by his standards, of course): .357 on 4.5 attempts per 36 minutes - both career high by a margin. That comes mostly due to .404 on corner 3s. Of course, big caveat is that he did as at PF, not as an SF, so I guess, he gets slower closeouts/more time to gather himself, but still open by 4+ feet shot is now a good one for him.
On top of that you get very strong defense and savvy passing as he has 4.5 assists/3 TOs per 36 (top mark of his career by a margin).
Johnson turns 30 in a few days, but has less than 9k NBA minutes in his legs, and never had any injury problems. Rudy has logged almost 27k to give you an idea.
So if Rudy opts out, is Johnson a viable option as a role-playing starter SF?
FA market for guards/forwards, who can bother elite SFs, is very slim, and there are certainly no good all-around forwards available.
