Has the play of Rondo made Darren Collison dispensible?

When Rondo and Collison are both on the floor, DC controls the ball way too much. The one time Rondo got the ball early into possession ended with Collison making a three, which should be the default setup, because when DC is on the ball, Kings have useless C&S player in the lineup, who is not good to score inside, which means Kings play 4-on-5 offense -Karl got Vivek's idea backwards. Anyway Rondo/Collison/Gay/Cousins lineup has 4 guys, whose primary instinct to control the ball/create - way too many cooks. And then he puts in Belli to look for scoring as well. Karl's previous 2-PG lineups worked, because he had 3 other players comfortable playing off-the-ball.

funny, while the premise of the OP is quite ridiculous, there might be something to the idea of the kings playing better without collison. when he was out, coach was forced to move away from small ball, because he had very few players on the court with speed, so we saw greater patience from the team and a stronger commitment to rim protection. this is, of course, not a slight on darren, but a slight on the coach's strategy when darren is available. i'd really prefer not to see rondo/collison-led units anymore. it's a tremendous defensive liability to place them on the court at the same time, and while rondo certainly has had his share of turnover issues during his brief tenure as a king, shifting him off-ball completely neutralizes any utility he has. karl has to find a way to fall out of love with his desire to play small. as a situational strategy, there may be moments when it proves effective, but as an overall approach for this particular roster? that's just doomed to fail, if you ask me...
Agree.

In theory, DC is one of the top 5 backup points in the league and could be a helluva asset if used correctly, as Rondo's backup.

In practice, Karl has used him a fair amount with Rondo, as a SG imposter and it largely comes with going small at the 3 and 4 on top of it and pushing the pace to reckless standards. And shockingly, it rarely works while we also get killed defensively and on the glass.

Furthermore, I've noticed Rondo, like most PGs, develops a better rhythm when he's out there for 35+ as the main ballhandler. Rondo's worst games this season have come when DC is healthy. His best have all come when DC was out and he was going 40+ a night.

On this team with Rondo, DC simply can't play more than 15 min a night. Just can't. He's not good off the ball. If we had a worse starting PG, could platoon it, more 30/20 or 25/25, something like that. If they meshed well, would be different as well. But success isn't built on "ifs".

Rondo flat out has to be the primary ballhandler for 35+ a night. No other way around it for this team. We played our best ball when he was the #2 option and controlled the game. Game DC comes back, the backcourt mess immediately returns. A shame because it was Ben's best game and it kept him on the bench!

Eh, Rondo can play 35 min a game. DC can play probably 21-15 min a game. a couple 3-4 minute stints of them together can work. 15 minutes of them together cannot.
