Hrmm. Legally, I don't know that he can back out of his commitment at this point. No ink on paper yet, but there may be an estoppel claim since the Mavericks' free agency strategy revolved around Jordan signing. Isn't Cuban on the record that they would have pulled the plug and gone full rebuild had DJ not signed? That means that they wouldn't have gone after Matthews and may have shopped guys like Parsons.

If I am Adam Silver, I would step in and encourage DJ to honor his commitment to the Mavs.

I think it's a grey area, and more of an un-written rule, but you make some good points- anyone remember something like that happening before?

i think it certainly justifies eliminating the rather silly week-long moratorium between the start of free agency and the date at which contracts can actually be signed...

Its probably better for our playoff hopes if DJ stays in LA. If he goes to Dallas they are probably a 45-50 win team and LA is still good enough to be the same. If DJ stays Dallas could fall off. They lost Chandler, Ellis and Rondo. Parsons is coming off knee surgery, Wes off Achilles tear, Dirk is 37. If Dallas and Portland fall off theres one more spot open assuming OKC rebounds.

I disagree. Clippers defense will suffer without Jordan. Dallas will have a 37 year old Dirk, Matthews isn't even going to play until later in the season, then Jordan who doesn't have CP3 to throw lobs to him. Kings actually have a better chance of making the playoffs this way.

Not quite, according to Wikipedia, Boozer was an RFA and the Cavs agreed to release him and offered $39MM over six years. Utah offered more and the Cavs chose not to match. Boozer and his agent deny there was ever a deal with Cleveland. In this case, DJ actually accepted Dallas' offer, but couldn't ink the deal due to the moratorium. A contract claim might not hold because there is nothing signed on a multi-year deal, but there is certainly a promise, reliance and detriment.

This all but confirms (for outside viewers who don't realize how limited DJ really is offensively) that DJ cannot survive without a top PG dishing to him regularly. It's what he is, it's what he always has been. Mark Cuban calling him a 20-20 player is stupid, period.

FWIW, Mark Cuban's brother is threatening legal action already on twitter for tortious interference with business arrangements.

I'm guessing the CBA will trump here and Cuban will have to suck it, but if Jordan signs with the Clippers and it goes to court, one of the remedies would be to bar Jordan from playing professionally for the duration of the contract with the Mavericks.

Edit: Edited to add that Brian Cuban has no official ties to the Mavericks, so the legal threats are just bluster.

It might be better for us if he did go back on his word and stay with the Clippers. It would leave Dallas in a potential mess because they have an ageing Dirk, two players coming back from injuries (Chandler, knee; Wes, achilles), and they would have questionable starters at PG and C. They'd be vulnerable like they were a couple of seasons ago, and might even result in them blowing it up.

He sticks with the Mavs and they have 4/5 of a good starting unit (if their SG and SF comeback strong from their injuries), and the Clippers should still be a play off team with Paul and Blake carrying them.

Emmanuel Sanders did something similar when he and his agent agreed in principal to join the Chiefs, then backed out and joined the Broncos. Granted this is an NFL example, but if all he's given is a verbal agreement that he will join, then with nothing signed surely he can change his mind?

It's not a nice way to do business, and he'll probably end up with the Mavs, but maybe he's realised he made a mistake...

Collected info on DeAndre Jordan situation:

There are several reports today that DJ has been reconsidering his decision to sign with the Mavericks since Monday. Those reports indicate that among other things, DeAndre enjoys the Clippers family atmosphere and the camaraderie with the other players.

The feeling in the Clippers organization is that Dan Fegan (Jordan's agent) pushed Jordan in the direction of the Mavericks, who are owned by Fegan's good friend Mark Cuban. They also point to Fegan trying to get DeMarcus Cousins to go to the Lakers as further evidence.

At this time, Clippers Coach Doc Rivers coach and other personnel, including J.J. Reddick and newly signed Paul Pierce, are either in Houston or headed there, in hopes of meeting with Jordan to convince him to reconsider his decision before he goes on vacation out of the country. It has been "reported" on Twitter that privately, people in the Mavericks front office are "nervous" about the latest turn of events, and Sam Amick says that the threat of Jordan going back to the Clippers is "very real."

I think more than anything, I really want to see Fegan with egg on his face. If teams don't feel that he can deliver what he says he can deliver, then good.

If a verbal agreement isn't held up in this instance, the entire free agency process will be turned on its head. Almost every team in the league has made moves based on verbal agreements with players/agents, agreements that impact the salary cap, other moves, etc. I do not see a way Adam Silver can allow this.

This could get very interesting....does anyone know if Mathews signed before DJ signed? If DJ returns to Clippers, Cuban may just say the hell with it, we pull our offer to Wes Mathews. It would do them no good to have the Mathews contract without a legit big man.....I believe Cuban said they would rebuild without a big signing.

The best cospiracy theory I have about the fallout from this is that if DJ returns to the Clippers, the Suns- who brought on Tyson Chandler in part for LMA will go back and agree with Dallas to retain Chandler.

Silver can ask really nicely, but I don't think he can stop anyone from backing out.

The whole system puts teams at enormous risk and favors the players. Hedo Turkoglu backed out of a deal with the blazers to go to Toronto a few years back.
