Who should the 49ers pick?

#1
Hey, I want to see what the consensus is here. I think they should try to build a better offensive line for sure. I believe that should be their main concern actually.

In another thread I read some believe they should faze out Barlow and I 100% agree with that, the backups did good with him out. I never had faith in him to begin with.

How about defense, do you think they should work on that too? I think a few minor changes might be good, but in my opinion they aren't that bad.

We need Vince Young. But since we are going 9nth we'll get some smoe who might be a good player. We hvent had the best of luck with drafting the last oh ten years.

Ive heard 9th , 7th, 6th but im too lazy to check and not really concerned right now anyway. Maybe next month ill look;-)
Yeah, it's still a little early yet, we've yet to get through this season completely yet! :D I can't help it though, I just love my team.

Anyway last I heard it is in fact 7th pick from the news media, but I have no proof.

Best bet for the Niners is Fergusion, a nice building block for the offense to protect Smith and Gore...

They might have to trade up to get him though.

After that i say Ryans or Hawk, both are good LBs.... Guys that can make impact right away. If you can get good LBs for that 3-4 then the defense overall will improve..

Maybe Huff is a reach but i think he will good pick also, he has the potential of being impact DB in the NFL...

Alot depends on the coin flip between the Raiders and 9ners..

Im a Raiders fan, so you know how i want that one to go :D

They should find out who has the most late first-early second round picks and trade down, then pick the best Left Guard and Left Tackle available and work your way left to right on the offensive line. Been tough to judge our skill people when we have no O line to protect the QB and RB's.

The Niners will have a coin flip with the Raiders to determine the 6th and 7th slots. That being said, I would be happy if either D'Brickashaw Ferguson or Mario Williams is there when the Niners pick.

I like AJ Hawk, but if Peterson is re-signed, I think the team has bigger needs than linebacker, even one as good as Hawk. A game changer at defensive end like Williams or a franchise tackle like Ferguson would help more IMO.

I'm not a fan of Huff. I don't think he'll be able to play corner in the NFL, and I don't want to see the team draft a free safety that high unless he's a once in a generation player. Huff isn't.

If Nolan thinks Haloti Ngata can anchor the 3-4, then maybe that's another way to go, but I wasn't that impressed in the Oregon games I saw.

I think Winston Justice is a great tackle prospect, but I don't know if 7th would be too high to take him.

If neither Ferguson or Mario Williams are available, then I think the team needs to trade down. Maybe pick up some weapons to help Smith out. There's not a dominant receiver in this draft, but there are some good ones and a bunch of athletic tight ends.

Unless Nolan and company really think they can get an impact guy at the 7 spot (and they certainly might, this year's top 10 is MUCH more talented than last year's) then they need to stockpile picks by moving back. This team still has a lot of holes to fill.

I like Ferguson. Of course, it could be a whole D'Brickashaw - Rickshaw - San Francisco - Chinatown kind of thing.

;)

It's hard to get excited about drafting an offensive lineman isn't it? Better pass blocking won't turn Alex Smith into Peyton Manning, though on the other hand, his career might last long enough for him to learn how to be effective.

Not really. I'd be stoked if they grabbed Ferguson. Franchise left tackles can pretty much only be found through the draft. Plus, offensive lineman are about as easy to project to the NFL as any position. The number of busts is much lower than any other position (QB, WR, RB, DL) taken that high in the draft.

The Raiders won the coin flip versus the Niners the day after the season ended. (Niners loss to the Texans)

Niners are picking 7th.

I have to agree. Drafting a GOOD offensive linesman could pay dividends for a long time.

Seems like a good idea. If only the Raiders had done it.

Hah. Oops. They did. Davis just decided he'd stick Gallery at seven other positions before he tried him out at his natural, most needed spot.

As for the 9ers pick, an OL could be good, although I think maybe picking an RB would be a good idea, perhaps Washington's Harrison or Memphis' Williams.

I say the Raiders take either Cutler, if he falls (and if Shell isn't ecstatic about Collins nor Walters...Tui's time has passed), or a defensive player, such as AJ Hawk, Mario Williams, or DeMeco Ryans.

49ers win coin toss for 6th draft pick
RAIDERS ON LOSING END, GET SEVENTH SELECTION
By Dennis Georgatos
Mercury News

With a flip of a coin and a successful call of ``tails,'' the 49ers moved one up on the Raiders in the NFL draft.

The coin flip Friday at a hotel in Indianapolis, where the NFL scouting combine is under way, broke the draft-position tie between the 4-12 teams. The 49ers will go into the April 29-30 draft with the sixth pick, and the Raiders settled for the seventh selection.

``Winning the coin toss gives us a great opportunity to focus on getting the best possible player at any position to help our team,'' said 49ers vice president of player personnel Scot McCloughan, who made the call. ``It puts us one slot ahead of where we might have been and we can take a player we have our eye on.''

NFL officials conducted the coin flip, which was also attended by Raiders representative Michael Lombardi.

The Houston Texans (2-14) have the No. 1 pick and the New Orleans Saints (3-13) have the second selection based on their finishes last season.

The coin flip determined only the 49ers' and Raiders' places among the next five teams, all with 4-12 records. The first-round positions for Tennessee (No. 3), the New York Jets (No. 4) and Green Bay (No. 5) were set by a strength-of-schedule tiebreaker. These five teams will rotate through the third-through-seventh draft positions in the six subsequent rounds.

That rotation will have the 49ers picking fifth in the second round, fourth in the third round, third in the fourth round, seventh in the fifth round, sixth in the sixth round and fifth in the seventh round.

``This puts us in even a better light in the second and future rounds, which is very important,'' Coach Mike Nolan said. ``It gives us a better spot to find more quality football players.''

The Raiders will pick sixth in the second round, fifth in the third round, fourth in the fourth round, third in the fifth round, seventh in the sixth round and sixth in the seventh round.

If the Niners keep the 6th pick:
A.J. Hawk (LB, Ohio State) or Michael Huff (DB/Safety, Texas)

If the Niners trade down a short distance:
Vernon Davis (TE, Maryland) or Chad Greenway (LB, Iowa)

If the Niners trade down a longer distance:
Depends on who is left. Chad Jackson (WR, Florida), Manny Lawson (DE/LB NC State), a few other possibilities.

niner need offensive line or defensive backs. Those are their weaknesses... along with wide receiver, defensive line, and quarter back. so basically, the best player on the board at the time should be picked by the niners.
