With a flip of a coin and a successful call of ``tails,'' the 49ers moved one up on the Raiders in the NFL draft.
The coin flip Friday at a hotel in Indianapolis, where the NFL scouting combine is under way, broke the draft-position tie between the 4-12 teams. The 49ers will go into the April 29-30 draft with the sixth pick, and the Raiders settled for the seventh selection.
``Winning the coin toss gives us a great opportunity to focus on getting the best possible player at any position to help our team,'' said 49ers vice president of player personnel Scot McCloughan, who made the call. ``It puts us one slot ahead of where we might have been and we can take a player we have our eye on.''
NFL officials conducted the coin flip, which was also attended by Raiders representative Michael Lombardi.
The Houston Texans (2-14) have the No. 1 pick and the New Orleans Saints (3-13) have the second selection based on their finishes last season.
The coin flip determined only the 49ers' and Raiders' places among the next five teams, all with 4-12 records. The first-round positions for Tennessee (No. 3), the New York Jets (No. 4) and Green Bay (No. 5) were set by a strength-of-schedule tiebreaker. These five teams will rotate through the third-through-seventh draft positions in the six subsequent rounds.
That rotation will have the 49ers picking fifth in the second round, fourth in the third round, third in the fourth round, seventh in the fifth round, sixth in the sixth round and fifth in the seventh round.
``This puts us in even a better light in the second and future rounds, which is very important,'' Coach Mike Nolan said. ``It gives us a better spot to find more quality football players.''
The Raiders will pick sixth in the second round, fifth in the third round, fourth in the fourth round, third in the fifth round, seventh in the sixth round and sixth in the seventh round.
