About Valeriya Berezhynska

Well, after doing a bit of research (thanks, RebKell!), Valeriya played for Rice University (in Houston, TX) and was selected by the Detroit Shock in the recent draft last month.

Her Rice profile:

But here's a nice interview from September 2007, during her senior season at Rice. She even mentions going 1-on-1 with DeMya!

She was drafted by the Detroit Shock at #42, right before the Monarchs selected Charel Allen as the 43rd and final pick. The Shock waived Valeriya last week.

However, she's a big girl at 6'4", so we'll find out if she survives what's left of the preseason training camp.

On her way to grad school, Valeriya Berezhynska took a detour to Sacramento and a possible WNBA career. "While I was shopping at the mall, I got a phone call, inviting me here," said the 6-foot-4 center from Rice. "I left my graduation party early to get on a plane to Sacramento." (more)
